20.01.2022 Interview with Jill Sanders from Drum Drum Farm - Certified Demeter Biodynamic Blueberries. How did you get involved in Demeter Biodynamics? We contacted Alex Podolinsky after attending a Blueberry Growers field day regarding b.d. and soil fertility. We had been interested in a chemical-free way of farming for quite some time and had read some of Alexs books, so it was a logical next step to make contact... We liked the idea that it was friendly to the environment and manageable for farms of large or small size - so good for a farm of our small scale We learnt about the improvement Bio-dynamics made to the soil and we were dealing with heavy basalt clay that certainly needed improving! What results did you notice once using the Demeter Biodynamic method? We noticed our soil darkened and became more friable Over time our blueberry plants went from not really thriving to looking very healthy and happy, and our pasture was a lovely healthy b.d. green. It took a few years to notice a marked difference. We were suddenly growing a lot of dandelions and the laneways between the plants and had a bigger variety of types of plants. I love dandelions because they bring up calcium in their roots and when we mow the tops we shift the calcium back into the top layer of the soil which helps our natural soil pH of 4.5 become less acid. Over time the soil pH has changed and is now at about 6. The Public initially remarked on our improved flavour of our blueberries. They now come here each season and tell us how beautiful it is and how they are so much better than other Blueberries on the market Jill Sanders, Drum Drum Farm #drumdrumfarm #biodynamicfarming #demeter #australiandemeterbiodynamic #blueberries

19.01.2022 Healthy Demeter Bio-dynamic plants, naturally building the nitrogen in the soil for future crops #australiandemeterbiodynamic #biodynamicfarming #demeter #repost @burrumbiodynamics This paddock we are walking through will one day be planted with a wheat crop. The plants here are nitrogen fixing legumes - beans, clovers and medics. It can take many years for us to prepare an area for a crop as wheat needs a store of nitrogen to have a good protein level. All of our paddocks cycle through natural building up phases and are all @australian_demeter_biodynamic Certified.

18.01.2022 #worldbiodynamicday is today! As Australian is a large country which has many climatic regions, its not viable for all Demeter Bio-Dynamic farmers/growers to be applying 500 and/or 501 today for World Bio-Dynamic Day. Instead I ask the members of the BDAAA and BDGA to get involved by answering the question- What Bio-dynamics means to you? ... 18.01.2022 David Marks memorial. On Wednesday 18th November, we lost our dear friend and colleague David Marks. David and Heidi ran a Biodynamic dairy farm producing quality BD yoghurt and cheeses. David was a passionate Biodynamic farmer, committed to promoting and guiding future farmers in experiencing the biodynamic method. Under Alex’s guidance David also developed a facility to make quality 500 preps. ... David had been coming to the association conferences for many years, and along with others had been active in organising and hosting the annual gathering of Northern growers. He was tireless in his work to develop a succession plan for the future of the Australian Demeter Biodynamic method. He spoke of this constantly and committed his time and energy towards this vision. He became a Director of Biodynamic Research Institute (BDRI) in 2014, which was a time of great change in the certification industry. He was the principal certification director of BDRI which required many hours of work to keep up with the increasing demands of government regulation. This work successfully maintained BDRI’s status as an accredited certification body within Australia. Those who worked with David and knew him well, will miss him terribly. We always left him feeling positive about the possibility of change and progress. Our thoughts are with David’s family; Heidi, Bec and Josh. On behalf of our association and all its members, David, we thank you.

18.01.2022 Happy Earth day everyone. As a biodynamic farmer I kind of feel that everyday is Earth Day for us anyway. The soil is my business and it also grows my food and ...sustains my family, as well as all the families that are my clients. It serves the community in this way plus sequesters carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and cleans the water that runs through my property. I have heard people say that our soils globally are mineral deficient. From my experience I dont look at it this way at all. The minerals are always there but instead most soils lack life to access the minerals for our plants, our food and ultimately our health. When my father started the Australian Demeter biodynamic method in 1965 the soil wasnt lacking minerals but the root systems only went down 4 inches and it was so hard that the water would not penetrate. We didnt add any minerals as such but we grew cover crops, ripped the soil to allow the air in and added microbes, namely biodynamic prepared 500. The plant roots and the microbes penetrated deeply into the soil exuding sugars and acids extracting the minerals from the clay into the biomass. The bigger microbes and worms would eat the biomass and excrete out humus. (This is the short version) This humus made the minerals available to the plant and the root systems went from 4 inches to 4 ft in a matter of 20 years. So I hope by sharing this story that may be more farmers will understand and less chemicals will be used which kill the soil life and maybe one person might consider looking at our method more closely. 15.01.2022 AUSTRALIAN DEMETER BIO-DYNAMIC The Australian Demeter Bio-Dynamic method was developed in Australia by Alex Podolinsky. It is based on Bio-Dynamic preparations of the highest quality, which have been refined in Australia under Alexs guidance, working from the insights of Rudolf Steiner and the scientific experimentation of Ehrenfried Pfeiffer.... The practical application of the Australian Demeter Bio-Dynamic method is to: ~ develop and maintain soil structure ~ develop the humus on which that soil depends for its fertility and resilience ~ support the growth of healthy plants under the influence of the sun ~ produce of the highest quality in both flavour and nutrient density The success of the method depends on plants feeding themselves according to nature, through nutrients which are held within the humus content of the soil, not through water soluble nutrient in the soil water. Ideally, each farm operates as a closed unit, using the preparations in combination with the soil, climate and seasonal variation with which the farmer works. 13.01.2022 A great effort all round to help Biodynamic farmers in need #farmershelpingfarmers #repost @oricoop_bushfire_appeal Another massive team effort is coming to fruition this week, with a much needed load of donated biodynamic hay on its way from Central Western Victoria to Kangaroo Island, SA. Kathy & Graham of Katham Springs farm have lost much in the bushfires - a lifetime of tools, farming machinery, valuable pasture land, fencing and shedding. And since December, they...ve been trying to keep their base flock of 1000 ewes alive. Tania & Steve @burrumbiodynamics contacted ORICoop in early February, with a collection of fodder to donate to Kathy & Graham - together with fellow #biodynamic farmers Terry Phillips and Greg & Sally of St Elmo Farms. Since then, ORICoop have been working through the logistical barriers of getting the hay across on the ferry to Kangaroo Island. So it feels like a small miracle that on Monday, the hay was finally being loaded, ready for its journey to Kathy & Graham. Many thanks to truck driver Geoff, and Molly (pictured), for going around to each farm to collect the hay. Landing the round bales high - a stacking feat any truckie would be proud of! Thanks also to the Stawell CFA for their support of this mission, of which all farmers are proud members. And to @australian_demeter_biodynamic for covering the freight cost. Well share more as this hay makes its way across the border... #farmershelpingfarmers #communityaction #bushfirerelief #bushfirerecovery #biodynamicfarming #heartyourfarmer #organicfarmersbushfireappeal

04.01.2022 Rye grass grazing 101..... the image shows autumn planted ryegrass after first grazing and a topping. Close inspection shows the very fine shoots, or daughter ...tillers coming from the original tiller. The cool thing about ryegrass is that with each grazing the plants will develop a new set of tillers. This means at as we move into winter each grazing means creating more solar panels for the plant to create energy, reaching a peak in spring as the days lengthen, when the excess bulk of energy is converted to hay and silage. Another example of the positives that grazing can be, as well as sequestering. the spent roots as a carbon sink. 02.01.2022 #repost @zeallybaysourdough The Mallee Bio-dynamic. Certified @australian_demeter_biodynamic. This bread is a reflection of our food philosophies. To us it is both humble and extraordinary. From the first mix we were entranced. The sweet smell of the stone milled wheat flour simply mixed with water was so evocative.... The wheat itself is of incredible integrity and flavour, grown by 4th and 5th generation farmers Barry and Blake Edwards south of Mildura in Victoria’s semi-arid Mallee region. The Edwards’ are respected and revered in the region and have progressively converted thousands of acres to Bio-dynamic farming practices - the strictest standard for regenerative organic farming today. Currently they steward 10,000 acres. The grain is expertly milled fresh to order by farmers Ben, Andrew and Jenny of @powletthillfarm. This loaf, made from this wheat flour, water and salt, is given a careful long fermentation, producing a sweet caramelised crust and an earthy, nourishing interior redolent of bran and germ. In case you have come to expect little from this special grain: Wheat, we must declare, has so much flavour. #biodynamic #demeter See more
