20.01.2022 #whales #tasmania #biodiversity 'About 470 pilot whales beached on Tasmania's west coast in state's largest recorded stranding' (L. Shannon & K. Rollins, ABC N...ews, 23/Sept/2020) In further tragic news - another 200 stranded pilot whales have been found off the Tasmanian coast, many of whom have died. So far an estimated 470 poor whales have been stranded in the last couple of days. The article doesn't say why the whales were stranded, but hopefully the surviving ones can make it through. EXCERPT: 'So far rescue teams have managed to free about 25 of the original group of whales, but a small number have since re-beached themselves. Mr Deka said more of the whales had died overnight. "That's inevitable. But there are still a significant number that are alive, so we'll continue to work with those."'

As Australian communities recover and rebuild from a summer of horrific bush fires, other communities are coping with sea level rise, flooding, forced transition of cities and communities to safe zones, increasing environmental deterioration and biodiversity loss. With the outbreak of COVID-19, environmental protection efforts have changed dramatically, and there is much to learn and shar...e from our each other. This conference invites participants to share research and project updates, and work together to progress collaborative projects. 16.01.2022 It would be shellfish of us not to share the amazing work of NRM North and Cradle Coast Authority in protecting the Giant Freshwater Crayfish. Both regions are... working with local landholders to rehabilitate a total of 61 kilometres of high priority river areas for the Crayfish in northern Tasmania. This protection and rehabilitation of streambank vegetation will reduce disturbance and sedimentation of the waterways and provide shade to streams and reduce water temperatures, improving habitat for the worlds largest freshwater crustacean. The iconic and fully protected Giant Freshwater Crayfish, Astacopsis gouldi, is a threatened invertebrate found only in northern Tasmania. These crustaceans are true river monsters with records of the species almost a metre in length and weighing up to six kilograms. Overfishing and habitat loss have seen the species decline over the last 40 years. The dedicated efforts on-ground and awareness raising activities of NRM North, Cradle Coast Authority, landholders and key partners are key to ensuring the future of this gentle giant. This work is being funded under the Australian Governments National Landcare Programs Regional Land Partnerships. : Left - Researcher Todd Walsh with a Tasmanian giant freshwater crayfish Top right - Researcher Todd Walsh with a Tasmanian giant freshwater crayfish (credit ABC News: Henry Zwartz) Bottom right - Giant freshwater lobster training session in Lilydale (credit NRM North: https://nrmnorth.netlify.app//giant-freshwater-lobster-pr/)

04.01.2022 Thanks so much for voting for me Voting has now closed but you can still donate in case we're not successful in winning a $10,000 grant https://www.gofundme....com/f/Lids4Kids Hi Guys. Last year I accidentally started a grass-roots volunteer project (Lids4Kids Australia) rescuing plastic bottle lids from landfill to be repurposed into sustainable recycled plastic products. Our charity is eligible for a $10,000 grant if enough people vote for me. If we win we'll be buying the necessary equipment we need to process the millions of lids we've rescued in our first year Thanks for your support! Cheers, Tim Miller
