25.01.2022 With a recent Productivity Commission report showing that between 40-50% of employees are considering switching jobs in the next 12 months in Australia, businesses need to consider retention strategies. We will never be going back to everyone back in the office. that ship has sailed. But what alternatives should we consider (and are we really more productive working from home?) https://www.hrmonline.com.au//productive-working-from-home/

22.01.2022 "The secret to bringing out the best in others is finding the ‘right’ ratio of challenge to support. Support too little and challenge too much you kick butt. People are stressed and discouraged." Dan Rockwell

21.01.2022 The Jobkeeper changes to the Fair Work Act have been extended to 28 March 2021. There have also been some changes for legacy employers (businesses who are no longer eligible for JobKeeper). You need to read the full details of the changes and discuss with your accountant the provisions that may apply to your business. https://coronavirus.fairwork.gov.au//extension-of-jobkeepe

21.01.2022 Are you a trade business? Have you considered that perhaps not providing toilets for female tradies on site could be costing you great employees? (And this is where I show my age - we had this same argument back in the 1980s with other workplaces. The fact we are still having this same argument 40 years later is very disheartening!) https://www.smartcompany.com.au//female-tradies-toilets-w/

20.01.2022 We have just released a series of updates to our Employee Manual products reflecting legislative changes arising from the Respect@Work report, and changes to superannuation choice processes for new employees. Check out what has changed and what your business needs to do about it. https://www.employeemanual.com.au/updates-to-our-employee-/

19.01.2022 All awards and agreements spell out the minimum shift duration for casual employees. Depending on the award or agreement, this can range from 1.5hours in certain limited circumstances, through to 4 hours minimum. Before rostering casual employees, you need to know the minimum shift requirements that apply to your business.

19.01.2022 If you require an employee to undertake compulsory online training at home, then this is classed as time worked and needs to be paid for.

19.01.2022 Another day, another penalty for not paying correct wages. This time the owners copped $30,000 personal fines each, as well as a $230,000 fine for the business. If you hire people, you must comply with workplace laws - no ifs, buts or maybes. https://www.mybusiness.com.au//7612-melbourne-cafe-penalis

18.01.2022 There are many things in life and business right now that we can't change. The only thing that we can control is how we think about those things. "If you don’t like something change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it." Mary Engelbreit

18.01.2022 "It is important to create a leadership environment where women are encouraged to step up and they don't wait to be tapped on the shoulder." Alison Watkins

18.01.2022 You can't win every race you enter, just as not everything you do in business will be a success. Learn how to greet failure and mistakes with grace and the resilience to have another go. That's what makes what you do in life to become something meaningful and worthwhile.

17.01.2022 If you are having a quiet day in your business, you may be tempted to send your casuals home early. While you are within your rights to do that, minimum shift requirements still apply. So, if your award says that a minimum shift is 4 hours, and you want to send the casual employee home after 2 hours, you still need to pay them for a full 4 hours.

16.01.2022 No person is a truly self-made success. There are always others who helped them up, amplified their voice and cheered on their success. Part of leadership is building up others to be the best they can be, and this often starts with caring about your team and celebrating their successes.

15.01.2022 October is the month to start planning your annual anti-harassment/bullying training to be delivered in November (before your Christmas party). Annual refresher training is not only a compliance requirement, it is a useful risk/reduction strategy. The office Christmas party makes most HR Managers shudder as alcohol and letting your hair down often equates to behavioural complaints.... Work out what you need to cover, who will cover it and then book a team training time in everyone's diary.

13.01.2022 Working from home is not all sunshine and lollipops. Some recent studies have shown that remote work can be more challenging than we like to admit, and can create negative impacts on the brain. https://www.hrmonline.com.au//cognitive-impacts-of-remote/

13.01.2022 What does it mean to be Australian? For many of us, it is that concept of mateship and lending a hand to those in need. It is making sure that no-one gets left behind. Right now, so many people need a hand it can feel overwhelming. Start with the people in front of you. How can you help the people in your team and their families weather the challenges that are facing them?

12.01.2022 With Christmas decorations now appearing in stores, it's time to plan your Christmas closedown. Check the awards and agreements of all your team members to find out notice requirements for the closedown, and make sure you let your team know of any days you will be closed between Christmas/New Year well in advance of these cut-off dates.

12.01.2022 Leadership is tougher than many people realise. In any business, you need to lead your entire team and not just the ones that you like or are friends with. "True leaders stand FOR people. They don't stand against SOME people". Hannah Gadsby

12.01.2022 Every permanent full time or part-time employee is entitled to a minimum 4 weeks annual leave each year under the National Employment Standards. You can't negotiate that this be reduced to less than 4 weeks in exchange for higher wages. It is against the law.

11.01.2022 Need to put an employee on a performance improvement plan? Document. Document. Document! A recent case before Fair Work was won by the business because of clear documentation and a well considered process. https://www.hrmonline.com.au//employee-bullying-performan/

10.01.2022 With COVID, many employers require employees to come in a few minutes early or stay back a few minutes to clean. This is time worked and needs to be paid for (or time off in lieu granted if permitted under the Award or Agreement).

09.01.2022 All businesses and employees have been doing it tough over the past 18 months. How can you turn what you have been through into fuel for the future? "Use what you’ve been through as fuel, believe in yourself and be unstoppable!" Yvonne Pierre

09.01.2022 No matter how bad things get, we need to keep the hope that tomorrow will be better. "Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today." Thich Nhat Hanh

07.01.2022 Another interesting decision by the Federal Court. This case explored low paid, long-term workers losing their job when their company lost large contracts, and whether redundancy was payable. The courts found in favour of the cleaners and not Spotless in this case. From this judgement, the exception to paying redundancy would only apply if the employee had a "reasonable" understanding the job would end in the "ordinary course", rather than if their employer loses contracts.... This has significant implications for many businesses. https://www.mondaq.com//redundancy-must-still-be-paid-when

06.01.2022 When looking to hire a new employee, ask questions that can't be answered with a yes/no. You want to find out more about your potential employees, so encouraging them to talk will help you get a better understanding of your candidate.

06.01.2022 December/January are two of the most popular months for leave requests. Create a holiday calendar for yourself so you ensure you have adequate coverage, and that not all team members are away at once. It also helps to make the reasons for approval/refusal of leave requests transparent. First in best dressed may not be the most appropriate reason!

05.01.2022 Ignoring a problem does not make it go away. The only solution to problems is to engage with the issue - as messy and as uncomfortable as that is.

02.01.2022 Thinking of adding a paid internship to your business? Thinkerbell is going one step further, offering paid 8 week internships - but you need to be over 55 to apply. https://www.smartcompany.com.au//thinkerbell-internship-o/

01.01.2022 COVID has had different effects on businesses. While some businesses have had to temporarily close resulting in staff using their leave, other businesses have been busier than ever, and staff have not been taking their breaks. Many staff members also have not wanted to access their leave because their is nowhere for them to go. This has created a ticking time bomb with many businesses, with staff leave accumulations rapidly expanding. ... Now is the time to review all leave accumulations for your team and plan strategies to bring accrued leave balances back to manageable levels.
