Flying fillies the domain of the Yeomans By Peter Wharton Doreen (Victoria) couple ...John and Christine Yeomans have established a solid reputation over four decades for breeding and racing quality standardbred stock, particularly pacing fillies and mares. The list of top performers bred at their Homestead Farm reads like a classics’ date book and includes Life Inthefastlane (Queen of the Pacific and Vic. Youthful Stakes), Im Smouldering (Vicbred 3YO Final and Tatlow Memorial), Racy Rita (Victoria Oaks), Vansumic (NSW Ladyship Mile) and Yes I Can (Vic. Youthful Stakes). Racy Rita probably put us on the map, John said. But Life Inthefastlane gave us our biggest thrill when she won the Queen of the Pacific after almost dying from a colic attack 12 months earlier. Other smart types raced and trained by John and Christine have been the Vicbred champion and Oceania El Dorado winner Gigi, Indigenous (Tasmanian Oaks and Vic. Gold Chalice), Gold Cygnet (Galaxy Grand Slam 2YO), the Moonee Valley Cup winner Relentless Pursuit, Etoile (APG 2YO Final), Jaydare (Tatlow Memorial) and Makeyourownluck (winner of $221,952). John estimates that he has trained more than 350 winners. We’ve been lucky to have bred or raced 12 Group 1 winners, he said. In recognition for sustained excellence and achievement in the Breeding industry, the Yeomans were presented with the Ian Daff Memorial Award for Victorian Breeders of the Year in 2012 by Harness Breeders Victoria. The husband-and-wife team are also proud sponsors of Victorian trotting their company Yeomans Slate and Stone. John admits that his success has been largely due to a team effort. Christine does most of the pedigree matching and we have great staff in Shane Gallagher and his wife Rachael Benns, who assist with the breeding, training and yearling preparation. Regular vendors at the Victorian yearling sales since the early 1980’s, John and Christine have sold colts such as Red Hot Major (WA Western Crown), Solid As A Rock ($163,530), Lanista ($107,415) and Badge Of Honour ($105,469) all classics material and fillies in the same class such as Vansumic ($268,649), one of the few mares to ever defeat Adore Me, and others. We normally race the fillies that we breed and don’t keep many colts, John stated. In a parting from tradition, the Yeomans have nominated two superbly bred fillies for the inaugural Nutrien Equine Standardbred Yearling Sale to be held at Oaklands Junction in April 2021. The draft comprises A Rocknroll Dance filly out of Im Smouldering, a multiple Group winning Bettor’s Delight mare from the grand producer Red Hot Rita, and a Rock With Joe filly from the Art Major mare Koori Art, a daughter of the Oaks winner Indigenous. Indigenous’s offspring have earned more than $518,000, while Red Hot Rita’s progeny have banked $512,000, John said. And, judging on their pedigrees and the Yeomans’ track record, the two youngsters are a realistic chance of adding their names to the Homestead Farm honour roll. See more

15.01.2022 Feeding a horse suffering from laminitis can feel like quite a stressful task. Here is a quick do's and don'ts with what needs to be considered to safely naviga...te through this tricky time. What is safe to feed? Base the diet on low starch, low sugar forages. Then balance the diet with a grain and grain by-product FREE balancer pellet or complete feed. Feed at the correct amount (feeding rates) to provide quality protein plus enough vitamins and minerals to fully meet requirements. Do feed low sugar hay; Rhodes grass, lucerne, teff or native grass hays are best Do keep horses off pasture; Keep horses completely off pasture until they are sound Do allow early morning grazing. ONCE SOUND allow grazing in the very early morning. 5:00AM for example. Do feed a grain-free diet with high quality protein + balanced vitamins & minerals Don't feed oaten, wheaten, barley or ryegrass hay or chaff (Ever!!) 04.01.2022 BRENNAN IS READY TO RUN MULTIPLE group one winning trainer Michael Brennan is an unbashful fan of ready to run sales for yearlings and openly admits he is count...ing the days for the concept to make another rebirthing in Australia this year. This 2020 edition, the first standardbred sale conducted by Nutrien Equine, is unlike any previously seen. The 25 nominated horses will breeze up at either Menangle (Nov 1) or Shepparton (Nov 4) as well as two on the south island of New Zealand at a similar time. The horses will be filmed and have their work documented before an online sale starts on Friday November 20 until bidding ends two days later. There is no doubt in my mind the ready to run sale concept is one of the golden opportunities for harness racing to become a more attractive option for new participants in the industry, West Australia based Brennan said. Everyone goes to yearling sales hoping they have just brought the next champion, but the reality is you don’t even know if the horse can pace. This sale gives an opportunity to see these horses up and running and that’s such an important thing as far as getting new owners involved. All the hard work is done, you can see what you are getting and more to the point, you are capable of going to the races six weeks later with a whole new group of excited people. And whilst it is relatively new to us all, I think the online aspect of it all brings with it a lot of opportunity. For starters, it’s an expensive two day exercise for me to travel to Sydney or Melbourne to attend a sale so unless it fitted in perfectly with what was happening at home it was so easy to find reasons not to be there. But now as an online sale, the only excuse i, or anyone else anywhere in the world for that matter, have not to be involved in the bidding is if there is nothing in the sale that fits what i’m looking for. Brennan has another reason to look forward to the upcoming sale... he is perfect" when it comes to his ready2run purchases. In 2014 he attended the Menangle sale and on behalf of clients purchased two horses. He paid $36,000 for a colt that went on to race as Nathans Courage and also went into an eastern state partnership that went to $71,000 on the sale topper, later named Zee Dana. You could say it was a terrific introduction to the ready2run concept, Brennan said. Nathans Courage was a fantastic horse who won $150,000 from his 12 wins from 28 starts. He split Soho Tribeca and Chicago Bull in the Golden Nugget as a four year old and then won the Nights of Thunder. He was good, but Zee Dana was a star.... he won six of 13 with five placings and $90,000. He won the ready2run race and finished second in a Tatlow as a two year old before running second to Lazarus in a Vic Derby heat. His last two starts he won a NSW Derby heat and then finished third in the final before he suffered a snake bite and died. Tragedy, Brennan said. Two years later Brennan purchased another would be" ready2run horse, named Miss Sangrial. Daniel Jack had nominated her for the sale but there was a mix up or change of dates with the sale so she was withdrawn, Brennan said. He told me months earlier she was a good filly and said I’d be mad if I wasn’t at Menangle to buy her. When there was the change and she wasn’t going to be there I flew over and had a drive on her and we brought her. Eight weeks later she won a heat of the MIA Breeders Plate and finished a close third in the $40,000 final. She has now won 19 races and $240,000. Shes been a star for us, a stable favourite for over three years and amazingly enough, it was always the next stage of her career that has been looked forward to from that first discussion about her. She Is wonderfully bred and right from the start Daniel said she is a really good filly that will have a very successful race career barring any accidents. But he said i will be breeding out of her and her progeny for the rest of my life. Think he maybe under sold that... my grandkids will be breeding out of her family! Brennan and Jack also have a 2020 ready2run connection. Doctor Tom, purchased by Brennan for $30,000 at the 2018 Sydney APG yearling sale, made a stunning debut at Northam on Saturday night. The American Ideal-Chloe Vargarita gelding smashed the clock and his oppositions heart, winning by an incredibly widening 61 metres. Jack has four horses nominated for the upcoming sale, including the only Art Major to be offered, a half sister to Doctor Tom and Brennan is confident his latest boom" horse will only generate more interest in the filly. He is a really nice horse who will win a good race one day, Brennan said.
