21.01.2022 The Morrison Governments biggest on-going policy failure is literally costing us the earth (as we know it). Nasa announced this week that 2020 a year which included a La Niña event normally associated with lower temperatures was the hottest year on record. It was also the week in which the Morrison government used racist tropes to distract and excuse conspiracy statements made by its MPs. Remember the good old days when climate change deniers would proclaim that the world has not warmed since 1998? Since then there have been 16 years when it has been hotter including nine of the past 10 years. The trend of the past 20 years has us reaching 2C above pre-industrial averages by 2054, but if we go by the past decade, we’ll get there by 2036!

19.01.2022 Wayne Swan nails it here. Post-truth is pre-fascism. When we give up on truth, we concede power to those with the wealth and charisma to create spectacle in its place. For Labor it has never been more important for us to put forward a platform serious about jobs and economic recovery, the quality of our democracy and real action on climate change. The pandemic and its fallout not only makes it easier but also more urgent for us to politically dismantle the essence of the government’s trickle-down agenda tax cuts for the wealthy, wage suppression for the rest, and continuous undermining of social security and the wider safety net.

19.01.2022 The link between migration and environmental degradation is clear. As global warming makes parts of our planet uninhabitable, mass migration will become the norm. Air and water pollution do not respect national boundaries. We can stop a humanitarian and political crisis from becoming an existential one. But our leaders must act now. We have a right to breathe clean air. Governments and courts are beginning to recognise this fundamental human right. The problem is not just that of the developing world. Air pollution contributes to around 200,000 deaths a year in the UK. One in four deaths worldwide can be linked to pollution.
