13.01.2022 Here's one of the five star reviews I've received for 'Uncle Dad'. ' ...I am a great fan of David Menon's writing and have read all of his previous books but this one is in a class of its own. Sean Matheson's sister is dying but she has one wish for him to take care of her children. This he sets about to fulfil... Sean's partner, Brett, has issues with parenthood but Sean has no idea how deep seated these are and thinks he's being deliberately difficult. Sean also has serious issues with his own family especially his mother who sets out to undermine her daughter's wishes due to her personal prejudices. But this is a beautiful book, emotive, funny and sensitive to complex issues. Can Sean weather the storm for the sake of his niece and nephew, helping them to come to terms with their loss as well as his own. This is a story about love in its many forms, but it's far more than that. It is a tribute to the amazing resilience of the human spirit and how to find the strength within that you may not have been aware you had. The beautiful Australian setting gives a real backdrop to the true power of the story and I definitely don't think that David gets anything near the amount of credit he deserves as a writer. I hope that this book will change that. I read it in two sittings and the only reason I stopped was to have dinner. From the beginning the reader is drawn in and compelled to follow the narrative to its unexpected conclusions.
