16.01.2022 Weve released a study that looks at the relationships between place, social circumstances, gambling and harm in two local neighbourhoods in Melbourne, with a focus on electronic gambling machines (EGMs, or 'pokies'. The neighbourhoods were differentiated by socio-economic advantage and the availability of pokies machines. The study found that: community members and families are attracted to local gambling venues by a range of heavily promoted non-gambling activities and f...acilities, including free or subsidised meals and drinks, and are exposed to EGMs in the process. the neighbourhood with the highest level of social stress and disadvantage had higher levels of EGM availability and experienced higher levels of gambling related harm. AGRC found that while few Australians played poker, the ones that do have the highest rate of problem gambling. Most were men, aged under 50 and worked full time. 08.01.2022 New national rules to protect young people and vulnerable gamblers were announced this week by Minister for Families and Social Services, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP. Online wagering companies must now take 14 days or fewer to verify whether new online wagering consumers are eligible, when previously it was 90 days. This will reduce the risk of underage or self-excluded participants gambling online.
