23.01.2022 An anonymous tip from the public recently saw NSW DPI compliance officers confiscate another invasive and environmentally damaging American corn snake from a pr...operty in Western Sydney. Keeping American corn snakes (Pantherophis guttatus) is prohibited and carries a maximum penalty of $220,000. The main risks associated with corn snakes are similar to those posed by all exotic animals and primarily relate to biosecurity issues, with the potential to introduce exotic parasites and diseases to our native animals. Once released, corn snakes may establish in the wild posing additional threats in terms of direct resource competition with native snakes, as well as additional predation pressure on small native animals. They are also extremely difficult to eradicate. If you suspect someone is illegally keeping American corn snakes or any other prohibited reptile please use our online reporting form: www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/biosecurity/vertebrate-pests/nia See more

22.01.2022 Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there can be no argument about the Collett's Snake, Pseudechis colletti being the most colourful of the larger venomou...s Australian snakes. Very popular in the snake keeping hobby and readily bred, but finding one in the wild is truly rare occasion. So Gary Stephenson and I counted ourselves lucky not to have run over it when this juvenile crossed the road near Winton. We had also found the previously posted Black-headed Python and the Woodland Adder on the same trip. See more

11.01.2022 On Tuesday we lost a great scientist and friend, Dr Paul Masci from the University of Queensland. Those of us who worked with venoms will all have had some c...ontact with Paul over his life for he always made time to talk and listen to us all. Paul was full of ideas and all of us who talked with Paul would remember the conversations as effervescent with contribution. I learn't a lot from Paul, especially in the field of haematology where many venoms star with potential uses in medicine. Paul told me recently he had some cardiovascular issues which would end his life quickly but that didn't stop him. I think many of us advised him to slow down and take a break but Paul was always working. He was a workaholic. He made us think he was invincible. Today he is no longer with us and that's hard to believe. Paul was a copius publisher of scientific works, some of them brilliant. His ground breaking work on the molecule from the brown snake venom, textilinin, a plasmin inhibitor will be a significant contributor as an anti-fibrinolytic agent to reduce blood loss associated with complex surgeries. Those of us who worked with snakes also benefitted immensely with his suggestions and often he joined in writing up the case histories for everyone else to learn about the features of snake bites. The world of toxinology is stunned with his loss and I cannot do any better than Professor Kini from the University of Singapore who said "what a loss! Brilliant and innovative scientist and great gentleman". Associate Professor Scott Weinstein from Adelaide said "his work was excellent. He also showed how one could change careers to great effect when driven by a motivating passion". Professor Paul Alewood from the University of Queensland said Paul had "many friends and colleagues in the snake venom field". It's hard to imagine a world without Paul. Luckily his legacy will live on for many years in the reearch world. Our deepest condolences to his family. See more

06.01.2022 Hi, I'm a documentary filmmaker extremely passionate about human-animal coexistence stories (: If possible, I'd like to invite you to check out our new campaign... for my upcoming documentary Mother Crocodile on Documentary Australia Foundation and ask you to kindly contribute by donating/sharing/following/commenting, interacting with us https://documentaryaustralia.com.au/proje/mother-crocodile/ Dr. Marise Tellez from Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) kindly wrote about our film: "The very westernised thought of anthropomorphising animals is not wrong at all. To think of animals as having feelings, thoughts, emotions, it has never been seen as "wrong" to someone of indigenous background. I think this film breaks that barrier which I believe needs to be broken if we are truly going to build that bridge between nature and humans once again. Matadora Films production, Trailer below:
