16.01.2022 #DonEllison author, propagator, exporter, plant hunter, speaker, seed specialist, lover of Frangipanis ... an horticultural world legend passed away yesterday from the effects of a massive stroke a few months ago. Don, a second generation horticulturist, was born February 1934 and has spent a lifetime working with plants... starting his entrepreneurial journey selling carnations at the age of 12. He has left a wonderful legacy for us all through his passion for plants and ph...otography being available in his many fabulous published reference books ... topics ranging from Camellias to palms. The one we were all waiting for was his Frangipani book... hopefully someone will take up the project. His fellow plant hunters AKA ‘fellow obsessive horticultural travellers’ will vouch for Don’s thirst for plant knowledge and his desire to share this with everyone. Condolences to Don’s family and close friends, he will be missed. RIP in your new garden Don. See more

09.01.2022 The season we call 'Spring' in Australia can be anything from windy cold to blasting heat depending on where you are in the country. "Sprinter'? 'Sprummer'? Increasingly, the standard four seasons just don't seem to make much sense. Perhaps it is time we looked to our First Peoples and their understanding of the seasonal changes in Australia's regions. 06.01.2022 The Haleakala Silversword (Argyroxiphium sandwicense subsp. macrocephalum) or 'hinahina' meaning "very grey" in Hawaiian, is a rare, threatened species that can only be found between about 7,000 and 10,000 feet high up in the Haleakala National Park on the island of Maui in Hawaii. It has numerous sword-like succulent leaves covered with silver hairs. The skin and hairs on the plant resist the wind and freezing temperatures of this altitude and protect the plant from dehydr...ation and the sun. It can live up to 90 years and flowers only once, sending up a flowering stalk with up to 600 pink and red flowers. Soon after flowering the plant dies, scattering its seeds to the wind.
