24.01.2022 Congratulations to @nicbrunsdon - NORTH PERTH HOUSE The North Perth House is an urban-infill project in inner-city Perth. Concrete pre-cast panels punctuated with arches are deployed to be both the finishing material and the building structure. On the ground floor these panels demarcate layers of privacy, each signifying a threshold leading deeper into the private life of the house. Garage, Gallery, Vestibule, Kitchen, then Living and Garden.... The material palette is deliberately restrained to three treatments; raw concrete for the heavy and hard-working elements like the structural panels and the floor, timber for the intimate moments like furniture, kitchen joinery, balustrades and bedheads, and the translucent sheeting to mediate the hard east and west sun and provide soft light to the height of the interior spaces. The simplicity of the design belies the complexity of the resulting spaces that are created; spaces that are compressed and dark, high and washed, raw and unfinished, and rich and intimate. 24.01.2022 Earlier today Edith Cowan University (ECU) released two highly anticipated Expressions of Interest seeking a Lead Architect and Design Engineers for its landmark City Campus - due to open in 2025. EOIs are available on the Tenders WA website from 2pm TODAY, with briefing sessions for each EOI to take place on Friday, 20th November 2020. Given the level of ambition, combined with the complex and multi-faceted nature of the project, we expect the Lead Architect will leverage international networks and knowledge to ensure ECU attracts the best advisors to deliver a project of international significance, - ECU Vice-Chancellor Professor Steve Chapman.

24.01.2022 Congratulations to @mjastudio - Stock Road Grouped Housing Stock Road is an alternative model for densification within Perths inner suburbs. Three dwellings sit on the corner site, all double storey, with sweeping white facades softening each approach to the street. The dwellings are stacked over two storeys and separated by tactile multi-use courtyards. Built form is broken into a series of identities and distinguishes each dwelling, creating a sense of ownership f...or each resident. Strong design outcomes on tight budgets were key drivers addressed to achieve the best built efficiencies. A low square metre cost was achieved through design flexibility, repetition, and construction methodology. Materials are expressed as built with off-the shelf cabinetry, resulting in a series of affordable, high-quality dwellings with low maintenance. Stock Road demonstrates a cost-effective infill solution that caters to a wide demographic. It seeks to become a benchmark for future development within the area and meet Perths missing middle housing demands. 23.01.2022 Congratulations to @beth_george - Reed House The Reed house is about recollecting memories and creating new ones. Extending the life of a house that has lived a hundred years into a new dwelling for a family of six, it sets out to live a hundred more. The project involves restorative work to the 1908 house that forms the projects street frontage. The axis of its hallway is extended into the garden, bordered by the new living spaces and enfolded by dangling acacia...s. The dining room has been excavated to create a tall space that is washed with light and hinges the original home and extension together. There was a strong desire to integrate the landscape into this project - with a love of gardening and a reminiscence of growing up among plants between the clients, we sought to create a garden for every room, and to create memorable experiences for their children through modest and beautiful architecture. 23.01.2022 Congratulations to @matt_mdcarchitects - Megalong An alteration & addition to a mid-war workers cottage with a 90s add-on to the rear. On early observation our interest surrounded the poor circulation through the original 1940s dwelling due to the number of changes the rear had endured. The 90s addition to the rear created a stop end to the sequence through the site and provided little to no connection to the rear laneway. We felt there was opportunity in tryin...g to link the front of the site to the rear of the site through what was, in effect, a mega long hallway and visual axis. Along this axis through the dwelling our aim was to make small interventions to some of the existing spaces that either required an upgrade or a change of use. 21.01.2022 WA Chapter President, Peter Hobbs was joined by fellow chapter members at the State Library of Western Australia’s Disrupted Festival of Ideas. During their panel discussion titled , they discussed the disrupted worlds of retail, the workplace and transport and how they will change the structure of cities, as well as how the use of AI is changing how our homes and cities are designed. They also spoke on how cities contribute to climate change and what needs to change and provided a hint of the next utopia.

19.01.2022 Congratulations to T&Z Architects - Juniper Chrystal Halliday The new Chrystal Halliday residential care facility represents the current shift toward higher density facilities within inner suburban areas to service the increasing need for residential care that allows residents to stay within their own community close to family, loved ones and friends during one of the most vulnerable periods of life. The goal for Chrystal Halliday was to eliminate obvious referen...ces to institutional design by creating an environment that is familiar, comfortable, warm and friction-free in order that the anxieties often associated with aged care facilities for both residents and loved ones are reduced, and ideally eliminated. T&Z have sought to create an environment where residents, staff and visitors feel comfortable, secure and welcome. 19.01.2022 Congratulations to @davidbarrarchitects - Marine Sitting prominently on a raised corner block on Fremantles oceanside Marine Terrace, this project is a simple yet sculptural rear addition to our clients heritage brick cottage. Built for a couple with adult children, the house reflects their casual and warm lifestyle in its planning, materials and detailing. Grafted to a house with a traditional central corridor and discrete rooms, the extensions planning is sim...ple, with a north facing dining and kitchen area on the ground floor, and master bedroom suite with balcony on the second floor. A generous daylit staircase joins the two levels and caps the extension, a back door leading to a small storeroom and outdoor parking space beyond. The two-storey brick volume is carved into, with large openings recessed into the elevation, chamfered walls creating angular shadows across the textured white bricks and revealing a softer internal layer of timber. 15.01.2022 Congratulations to @capa_studio - RZB House Located near one of Perths necklaced wetland lakes, the architectural and integrated landscape design reflects the ambitious brief of both client and architect for a house that registers climate and environment whilst being crafted for their personalities and ethical sensibilities. RZB house (Red Zephyr Blue) reflects the surrounding environment; with the design mediating the heat (red) and cool (blue) by allowing nat...ural breezes of the area (zephyr) for liveability. Louvred bookends to the house and a thermal chimney allow the clients to adjust to season and time of day. Inwardly, the house gathers around a series productive gardens and living ponds working as breeze activated evaporative coolers, whilst its upper floors open to green terraces, mature tree canopies and the park beyond. 13.01.2022 Congratulations to @coxarchitecture - 125 Murray Street 125 Murray Street is an exemplar for commercial refurbishment. The nine-storey CBD building had stood empty for many years, suffering poor levels of natural light, low ceilings and little visual connection to the city outside. The refurbishment has rebranded the building, with a remodelled faade that projects a strong street presence. Work inside was primarily carried out within the existing built form and f...abric, creating flexible open floorplates that support contemporary workplace models. Exposed services and authentic expression of the concrete frame and brickwork add visual interest, with new glazing delivering natural light and views back out to the city. An uninviting laneway to the south has been energised through artwork and lighting, re-establishing its appeal as pedestrian link through to Hay Street. 125 Murray makes a notable contribution to the revitalisation of the east end of Perths CBD, promoting a permeable city fabric and delivering public and commercial amenity. 12.01.2022 Congratulations to @woodsbagot - The Crest The Crest is a 22-story apartment building located in Burswood. In response to the unique wedge shaped site, its distinctive built form draws inspiration from the iconic Flatiron Building in Manhattan. Taking advantage of the sites high visibility opportunities, the Crests flair and cosmopolitan architectural design invite viewing from all angles in the surrounding context. The buildings dynamic form is experienced in... the round and provides a new discovery upon different approaches. Sitting as a pinnacle atop a hill looking down on Perth, no one side is favoured. Instead, it is a celebration of the multiple vistas Perth city can offer. From apartments on any side of the building one is treated to multiple views; either a combination of the river, the city skyline, or the hills beyond. 11.01.2022 2020 National Sustainable Architecture Commendation Award Congratulations to Pingelly Recreation and Cultural Centre by @irredalepedersenhook w/ Advanced Timber Concepts Studio for their commendation award in the 2020 National Architecture Awards for Sustainable Architecture. _... Repost @institute_architects_aus Commendation for Sustainable Architecture - 2020 National Architecture Awards Pingelly Recreation and Cultural Centre | iredale pedersen hook architects with Advanced Timber Concepts Studio | WA | Traditional Land Owners: Noongar people of the Gnaala Karla Boodja Region | Peter Bennetts Congratulations Jury citation: In addition to being a beautifully designed sports facility with a generous disposition, the much-loved Pingelly Recreation and Cultural Centre uses innovative sustainable timber design solutions for low environmental impact and high aesthetic value. One thousand tonnes of local plantation yellow stringybark was harvested, milled and used as cladding and flooring, jarrah was salvaged from the original sports hall, and all other timbers were from sustainable sources. An ingenious structural design using certified engineered timber and offsite prefabrication resulted in the reduced consumption of precious resources. Natural ventilation and fans cool the sports hall, limiting conditioned spaces to the function centre, gymnasium and club rooms. A high level of shading is applied to all glazing, and daylight augments lighting to the sports hall and other spaces. The oversized external timber cladding has been sealed with natural oil; however, it is intended to weather to silver-grey over time. #NatAwards20 #australianarchitecture #architecture #architectureawards

10.01.2022 Congratulations to @iredalepedersenhook - SwanCare New Leisure Precinct The New SwanCare Leisure Precinct aims to improve the health and wellbeing of residents by reducing isolation, encouraging safe movement and socialisation and to welcome friends, family and the surrounding community. Vehicles and Roads were removed and replaced with a wide and clear pedestrian boulevard. The boulevard extends from the primary SwanCare entry street to the new Leisure Precinct a...nd continues to the aged care facilities beyond. Sensory design manifests continually in external and internal. A constellation of sensory pavilions allows occupants and visitors to socialise, the pavilion of light and the Pavilion of sound increase awareness of senses and each other. In a world where the value of architecture is questioned, a recent visit included residents openly discussing how these facilities have changed their life. They discussed now feeling part of a community, a community that is part of SwanCare but also one that engages with society. 10.01.2022 Congratulations to @ptxarchitects - Little River Residence In the natural landscape of Western Australias southern coast, PTX Architects have crafted a residence that draws the past into the future. For over a century the Bonnie View farm cottage has overlooked the stunning vistas of Denmarks Wilson Inlet. After it fell into disrepair, new owners called on PTX Architects to bring this slice of history into the modern age.... The brief was simple: to integrate the old and the new. Alongside the restored cottage a new residence was crafted a contemporary twin to its vintage neighbour, built to the latest in sustainable design principles. The new dwelling features a distinctive cantilever design that sees the living space floating breezily over the landscape below. Charred timber and metal cladding make for a striking contrast to the farm cottages white weatherboard frame, and a sleek walkway between the two houses provides a gentle transition from the past to the present. 09.01.2022 Congratulations to @trcb_architects - The Rocks Laneway The Rocks project in Geraldton is a city-to-foreshore pathway incorporating existing laneways, streets and the original Rocks store, adapted in this project to accommodate a new pedestrian lane and events space adjacent to the city waterfront. The initial brief was to refashion the Rocks building a relatively standard Victorian shop to accommodate community activities and create a new pedestrian link be...tween Marine Terrace and the waterfront Esplanade. After preliminary conceptual work and budgeting, the City approved an expanded brief that incorporated a meta-graphic art installation across the entire length of the walk and a steel framed pavilion (or Ghost Office) on the site of the old town post office building. The Ghost Office structure incorporates a trellis and trained vegetation to provide a shady refuge on Marine Terrace. It forms a three-quarter scale outline of the Victorian post office building and reinstates the streetscape along Geraldtons primary retail High Street. 07.01.2022 Congratulations to @lyonsarchitecture w/ @silverthomashanleyperth - Curtin University Midland Campus Curtin Universitys Midland Campus is a 3,000m2 Health Sciences educational facility for multidisciplinary health training. The site resides near the confluence of the Helena and Swan rivers in a culturally rich area of pre and post-colonial histories. The design concept is derived from this rich indigenous and industrial heritage context of the Midland area, with... its design reflecting the projects role as a microcosm of the facilities found in a larger campus setting. Located on Whadjuk country, the project embodies the concept of a community meeting place with heightening indigenous representation through integrated public art, graphic totems, dual language signage and outwardly physical connections with landscape. The extensive expression of traditional crafted brickwork reflecting the adjacent heritage rail workshops - alongside mass concrete elements and natural internal materials, give the project a civic reading in contemporary form, whilst reimagining the monumental form and materiality of the mothership Bentley Campus. 07.01.2022 Congratulations to @iredalepedersenhook with Advanced Timber Concepts Studio - Pingelly Recreation and Cultural Centre The conceptual framework of the project is simple: two primary volumes containing the two main functional areas, wrapped around by a generous multifunctional verandah structure. Conceived of as a prefabricated engineered timber structure with local plantation timber claddings and flooring, naturally lit and ventilated as far as practical and economical...ly feasible. Above all, the buildings are user-friendly and functionally efficient. The project is sited along the NW perimeter of the oval on a small rise overlooking the valley in which the town is situated. The building represents a very close cooperation between the design team, the structural and fabrication engineers and the sawmilling team to create a structure that was economically competitive with conventional systems. 06.01.2022 Congratulations to Lisa McGann - Trapezoid House This houses form is dictated by a response to orientation and a desire for connectivity - between inside and outside, and between the house and the community. The programme is arranged into 2 linear volumes, one house, one carport. The focus is on the space between which acts as circulation spine, providing entry to the house and linking the front and back garden into a single, connected space.... The house volume is pushed hard up to the southern lane way boundary, allowing it to open itself up to the north, and to the garden. The footprint is minimised in order to maximise outdoor space. This house is transparent, front to back, prioritising connectivity to the outside and to the street, over privacy. A low chain link fence and open carport promotes neighborhood interaction and community. 05.01.2022 Congratulations to @nicbrunsdon - NORTH PERTH HOUSE The North Perth House is an urban-infill project located on a small block in inner-city Perth. Efficiencies of construction and economies of trade were key considerations in managing a tight budget and a difficult site with restricted access.... Concrete pre-cast panels are deployed to be both the finishing material and the building structure. By using this commercial construction system as the design concept, the project was able to gain significant budget and time savings, while maintaining design integrity and innovation. Each panel is punctuated with two types of arch, a grand arch and a pedestrian arch. The grand arch is provided for the more significant gestures in the house and the pedestrian arch is for clean perpendicular travel. The simplicity of the design belies the complexity of the resulting spaces that are created; spaces that are compressed and dark, high and washed, raw and unfinished, and rich and intimate. 03.01.2022 Congratulations to @mjastudio - Verdant Apartments The design approach for Verdant from a first principles level was to provide as much generosity as possible for the end user while creating homes which were more affordable and sustainable than their inner-city neighbours. This sense of generosity starts at street level and runs through the apartments and up to the roof terrace. A large, triple height entrance atrium, a six storey green wall, a large public art ins...tallation, and a wellness communal rooftop level offering resident lounge, gym, sauna, yoga deck, plunge pool and entertainment terraces with uninterrupted views, provides residents with something extra while sitting on the edge of Perths CBD. Verdant offers both environmental and social sustainability by promoting resident wellness through passive and active measures to reduce energy consumption, embodied energy and to ensure healthy materiality. 01.01.2022 Congratulations to Coniglio Ainsworth Architects and Place Laboratory w/ Curtin University - Curtin Bicycle Hub Located near one of Perths necklaced wetland lakes, the architectural and integrated landscape design reflects the ambitious brief of both client and architect for a house that registers climate and environment whilst being crafted for their personalities and ethical sensibilities. RZB house (Red Zephyr Blue) reflects the surrounding environment; with... the design mediating the heat (red) and cool (blue) by allowing natural breezes of the area (zephyr) for liveability. 01.01.2022 Congratulations to @iredalepedersenhook - City Beach Residential College The City Beach Residential College accommodates up to 66 country students enrolled in Gifted and Talented Secondary Selective Programs in some of Perths best schools. The new residential facilities provide after-hours teaching and tuition spaces combined with recreation, dining, and administration spaces. The site includes distant views to the city and immediately adjacent to Bold Park, the ...design capitalises on these opportunities balancing city and beach views with calming views to the park. The facilities embrace an existing mature Ficus tree that forms part of the public domain and street context and acts as a comforting and familiar figure for country boarders. It includes numerous country references that act a familiarity triggers. The building stretches around the mature tree to form a sun-filled, north facing and wind protected, private courtyard. The primary floor plan is formed by the desire to obtain passive surveillance from the reception desk to student spaces.
