07.01.2022 Why is Landcare important in difficult times?

07.01.2022 5 June, World environment day. Beside the corona pandemic and the flood that led many families to become homeless in Uvira, our members celebrated this day unde...r the theme Tree of Peace and Reconciliation (TofP&R). Uvira has been a conflict zone for decade. Howeve, all the communities groups in this area put behind their differences and joined their forces to make this day a day of hope and peace for everyone. Yes more than 350 households in the territory of Uvira joined their efforts by planting in their compounds fruit trees. More than 2500 trees were distributed. The foods we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the climate that makes our planet habitable all come from nature. Yet, these are exceptional times in which nature is sending us a message: To care for ourselves we must care for nature. 02.01.2022 In the 1970s, Costa Rica’s deforestation rates were among the world’s worst. But with a new landmark forestry law in 1996 that banned deforestation and introduc...ed a pioneering payment system to champion reforestation and biodiversity, forest cover is now back to 52 per cent. For small farmers, agroforestry makes economic as well as environmental sense. Trees provide shade, compost and a habitat for the flies that pollinate the cacao. On top of that, bananas are harvested every two weeks, supplying a steady income. #evergreeningtheearth #agroforestry #greenuptocooldown #communityempowerment #sustainabledevelopment #naturebasedsolutions Photo Credit: Kim Seng / Flickr
