22.01.2022 Does getting paid to eat tree-ripened mangoes sound like your dream job? Well that’s exactly what our research scientist Tara Slaven does for a living. I work ...with the National Mango Breeding Program, which has developed three new varieties crossed with Australia’s (current) favourite mango the Kensington Pride. These new varieties produce mangoes earlier in the season and more mangoes per tree, as well as mangoes with a better blush and the signature Kensington Pride flavour. We’re now in the stage just before launch into consumer markets. I’m based in Kununurra, which is a pretty interesting and extreme climate to work in. As cyclones and increased temperatures are predicted to become more common due to climate change, it’s more important than ever that scientists are researching ways for tropical fruit growers to make the most of their crops. Our horticulture research is helping industry to improve efficiency and increase returns from the farm gate to export markets. #ScienceWeek National Science Week
