25.01.2022 This story is baffling marine scientists around the country! Jason Fowler, a marine ecologist and ex-AMCS team member, discovered humpback whales in the Kakadu River while on a yacht. "We were madly arguing with each other about what we were actually seeing. After four hours of raging debate we agreed we were looking at humpback whales in a river", he said.... That is when Mr Fowler started filming. Read the full story below https://www.abc.net.au//nt-friends-find-whales-in/12658410

23.01.2022 WARNING graphic footage in the video below. The loss of human life is always tragic and we send our condolences to the family and friends of Nick Slater and all others involved in the recent shark bite at Greenmount beach, Queensland. Aussies love the ocean, a big blue and beautiful wilderness which is just that, wild. In any wild environment, on land or sea, there are risks to our safety. It is 2020 and we have solutions that can improve our safety at the beach and reduce ha...rm caused to wildlife - whether they be whales, dolphins or sharks. These include the use of drones, shark tagging/tracking, eco-barriers, and community education programs. Alarmingly, beach safety measures in Queensland are 60 years old. In what area of life would we accept safety standards that are 60 years old? In cars? In planes? In our workplace? We strongly urge the Queensland government, and all other parties, to modernise beach safety and transition to non-lethal solutions. Sign the petition to end shark culls. Link in comments below.

23.01.2022 Good news: the whale entangled in NSW shark nets has been freed Bad news: two weeks ago the shark nets went back in and we warned this would happen. NSW already uses drones & SMART drumlines for beach safety, these nets didnt have to go back in. Sign the petition in the comments below and urge NSW to get the #netsoutnow... https://www.9news.com.au//whale-/ckf1xh4nv00010gnnuhyip65c

21.01.2022 Well done to AMCS Cairns Reef volunteer Jemma Craig for telling her story From growing up on a Great Barrier Reef island to losing her job in the disruption of COVID-19, Jemma knows that tackling climate change can create thousands of jobs in clean energy and help protect the future of our beautiful Reef and the thousands of jobs it supports.

21.01.2022 Earlier in the year, Baidu (Chinas version of Google), approached us because they wanted to educate their audience about how to protect the Great Barrier Reef and how they can each make a difference in minimising global warming. ... The outcome was fantastic - 6.3 million people in China watched a livestream from the Great Barrier Reef hosted by a Master Reef Guide. Check it out this snippet!

21.01.2022 We would like to acknowledge Chantelle Doyle as a true champion of shark conservation. Chantelle was recently bitten on the leg by a juvenile white shark on the NSW north coast while surfing with her fiance, Mark. Chantelles fiance Mark fought off the shark and she is now recovering in hospital. Chantelle has told us that she wanted this incident to highlight the plight of sharks throughout our oceans, which are both critical to healthy ocean ecosystems, and threatened as a group of species. Chantelle wants us all to be #PunchingForHealthyOceans. Read her amazing story below

20.01.2022 "I had never considered myself an activist, but our daughters birth, amidst a time of coral bleachings, fires and drought, was a powerful wake up call." 17.01.2022 Have you been worried about the sharp rise in plastic from masks, gloves and disposable takeaway plastics? AMCS plastics spokesperson Shane Cucow talks with 9 News about what it means for our oceans.

17.01.2022 We welcome Federal Environment Sussan Ley MPs actions to protect the Great Barrier Reef and Reef wildlife from unsustainable fishing. Poor practices in the Queensland Government-managed East Coast Inshore Fin Fish Fishery (ECIFFF) have led to the deaths of thousands of endangered sharks, sawfish, dugongs, dolphins and turtles on the Great Barrier Reef. The Environmental Defenders Office, on behalf of us, wrote to Minister Ley alleging the Queensland Government had failed to ...meet Condition 9 of the Declaration of an Approved Wildlife Trade Operation Queensland ECIFFF, in December 2018. The Queensland Government then failed to address these concerns after being notified of this failure. Minister Ley will revoke the export permit of the Queensland Government-managed ECIFFF under the Federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act. This is because the Palaszczuk Government has failed to meet sustainability conditions for the ECIFFF agreed upon by both governments two years ago. It means commercial fishers operating in the fishery will not be able to export seafood internationally, but does not affect domestic trade. Exports include shark fin from sharks caught within the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, black jewfish bladders exported for use in the cosmetics industry, and mullet roe. AMCS supports sustainable fishing practices that do not harm our wildlife. https://www.theguardian.com//federal-minister-revokes-quee

17.01.2022 Meet an Aussie angel that needs saving Our angelic Eastern Angelshark is only found in the eastern waters of Australia. Despite their angelic appearance, they can be devilish when it comes to feeding. Angelsharks can perfectly camouflage by hiding in the sand, waiting to ambush swimming past prey. ... The sad news is that Angelsharks are vulnerable to trawling and can be sold for their meat, commonly known as "flake" in fish and chip shops. The Eastern Angelshark is listed as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List and its population is estimated to have declined by 60% from its initial size. Want to help save our unique Aussies? 11.01.2022 BREAKING: The South Australian Parliament has just passed historic new laws that will ban killer single-use plastics, starting in early 2021! Its a historic win for our turtles, whales and seabirds. The laws ban: Single-use plastic cutlery Single-use plastic straws... Single-use plastic drink stirrers 12 months after the ban starts, expanded polystyrene cups, bowls, plates and oxo-degradable plastics will also be banned. We congratulate David Speirs MP and the SA Government for cementing SAs place as Australias leader in the fight against plastic, as the very first state to ban these plastic items. 11.01.2022 The Torres Strait is not the place for industrialised fishing. This move would hit those most dependent on the ocean the hardest.

This weekend the community of Bateman's Marine Park paddled out to show their support for returned protections for sanctuaries that were cut back without consultation last year. Traditional Owners, scientists, local business people, recreational fishers and conservation advocates turned up at this CoVid Safe event to send a message to the NSW government they want these sanctuaries restored!

09.01.2022 WA's proposed plastics ban would make the state Australia's leader in the fight against ocean plastic pollution. What makes it better? AMCS Plastics Spokesperson Shane Cucow spoke to ABC Radio Perth about what the laws would mean for our dolphins, turtles and seabirds

04.01.2022 It's NAIDOC week! As we celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, we acknowledge their deep, ongoing connection to the Great Barrier Reef. Traditional Owners have looked after the sea country of the Great Barrier Reef for thousands of years and we thank them for their continuing custodianship. 03.01.2022 The Morrison Government is racing ahead with changes to our national environment law that will weaken protection for our unique wildlife and special places, like the Great Barrier Reef. The Government wants to hand power to the states and territories that have weaker laws. In the middle of a climate and extinction crisis, this sets us on an extinction fast track. Your elected reps need to hear from you that you support strong laws for our oceans. Link to petition is in comments below
