05.01.2022 Thanks to CIFOR for highlighting this important issue: The Australian community is also being told (again) that all we need to do to 'save the world' is plant trees! NGOs and governments focus on numbers of 'trees-in-the-ground' rather than the more important issues of ownership, knowledge, commitment, management, protection, natural succession, tree-tenure, right to harvest, education, multipurpose forests, supporting policies etc. Whilst the projects boast about how many ...trees they will plant, forests are being neglected, cleared and not replanted because landholders do not believe they have the rights to their trees and (rationally) refuse to spend their own money on tree growing because they are being told to expect that someone else will/should fund their tree planting. Past projects never go back and count how many trees actually grew or acknowledge the perverse impacts of their multimillion dollar projects. Flying over the country you can see that 30 years of Landcare grants in Australia have achieved very little. We need a new model of revegetation that engages the multiple values of trees and forests: for conservation and profit. 05.01.2022 A 1-day course for tree growers in Far North Queensland is being hosted by local tree growers in partnership with the Australian Agroforestry Foundation. Rowan Reid will be Zoomed in from Victoria. It will be a bit like a Master TreeGrower taster: https://www.forsiteforestry.com.au/growing-trees-for-wood/
04.01.2022 Great to see that our friend, author and farmer Charles Massy will feature on Australian Story next week: https://youtu.be/NVzjlhkGFjQ In his great book, The ...Call of the Reed Warbler, Charles recognises our work in the Otway Agroforestry Network and the Australian Agroforestry & the Master TreeGrower in changing the way farmers think about forestry. "This new form of agroforestry, in engendering concepts around multipurpose forestry, is based not just on restoring landscape function but also on building economic, ecological and social resilience into rural communities and landscapes." (see pages 418-421). We define agroforestry as the result of farmers growing trees for the reasons that are important to them. The result is a diversity of species, planting designs, management options and values that reflects the diversity inherent within the farming community. Our farm tours, education courses and mentoring programs help farmers understand the science, markets, practices, skills and the art of tree growing so that they can create unique forests that achieve the outcomes they want. After COVID-19 we'll be running more programs around the country. Email me to join our email list to be kept informed. If sharing please click "Include original post", thanks. 03.01.2022 Biennial bearing... In the bush, Tasmanian Mountain Pepper produces huge crops in some years and next to nothing in others. 2020 is one of those 'bad' years. ... Our pepperberry farm also has this 'alternate bearing' but we look at it differently: Some years we have a surplus of berries... Biennial bearing is pretty common in fruit trees, so now to find ways to "accentuate the negative, eliminate the positive, and start messing with Mister In-Between" See more
