24.01.2022 "Medicine heals the body, whilst music heals the soul,"- this is just one quote from an extensive collection of [very] basic quotes describing why Ben loves music. Ben has been playing the piano since the age of 7, and has since performed in a wide variety of places, ranging from Carnegie Hall in New York, to Perth Concert Hall for the 2014 WA Performing Arts Perspectives. For the upcoming AMSO concert, hes excited to be playing Africa Op.89 (Saint Saens), a fantasy which draws inspiration from various songs and dances across North Africa. 12.01.2022 Introducing our next piece of repertoire: the Hebrides Overture! This evocative symphonic poem paints a picture of an alluring cave on a distant Scottish Isle, and it is impossible to avoid being swept into a vivid scene of rock and spray. The powerful opening theme was written complete as Mendelssohn gazed upon Fingals Cave while on a trip to Scotland. To this day, the Hebrides Overture is one of the finest musical representations of visual imagery, and we are thrilled to ...be able to perform this wonderful piece of music at AMSO 2019. We are looking forward to a wonderful year of playing outstanding repertoire. If you would like to join us in 2019, please follow this link! https://docs.google.com//1FAIpQLScrn0_3W2A9Jzazx/viewform

11.01.2022 We are super excited to announce that our final piece for AMSO 2020 will be the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein. Inspired by Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story tells the tale of two rival gangs: the Sharks and the Jets. Amidst the groups growing tensions, a romance forms between two of the opposing gangs sympathisers: Tony, the best friend of the Jets leader, and Maria, the sister of the Sharks leader. Bersteins score was orchest...rated originally by Sid Ramin and Irwin Kostal, incorporating jazz, Latin, and musical-comedy elements. Bernstein later prepared a suite of orchestral music from the show, adding in instruments and sounds not typically heard in a traditional symphony orchestra. This included adding vocals (listen for the shouts of "Mambo!"), expanding the scope of the percussion section, and bringing in an alto saxophone. 10.01.2022 https://forms.gle/c29YGq4zZ2BZiY637 Hey guys! We are super excited to announce that we are looking to hold AMSO in Perth again next year - at the moment, we are thinking of some time around May 2021. To help us with organisation, it would be really great if you could fill out this form if you are interested in attending this event next year! ... Even if you are only thinking about it or on the fence, filling it out would really help us with finding more sponsors after COVID-19, especially if we can show them that this event is something that students are definitely still interested in attending! Please note that this is only an Expression of Interest, not a registration form. There is absolutely no commitment to attend, nor does filling it guarantee a place in the orchestra. As always, if there are any questions, feel free to message this Facebook page, or send us an email at [email protected] Cant wait to see you all again next year, and hope you are still staying sane! Much love from, The AMSO Committee xoxo

05.01.2022 We are excited to announce that our second piece will be Camille Saint-Sanss Africa fantaisie for piano and orchestra, op. 89 (1891). Beginning in 1873, Saint-Sans began winter trips to Algiers in Africa, where the warm climate, natural surroundings, and solitude provided refuge from the cold weather and busy pace of life in Paris. Saint-Sans was also eager to escape the demands of his own celebrity, and occasionally traveled under a pseudonym, Charles Sannois, to avoid r...ecognition. Thus, Algeria and North Africa represented an escape to rest and relax, a theme continuously reflected in the high-spirited piece. In addition to its programmatic title, the Africa fantaisie contains a number of musical symbols of that region: percussive rhythms, chromatic melodies and raised intervals. There are also pastoral allusions, including bird-like figures (representing his Algiers garden) and a country fiddle playing a folk melody. The work concludes with what was then the Tunisian national anthem, known as the Beylical Anthem. 04.01.2022 In 2020, AMSO are delighted to be performing arrangements of Joe Hisaishis compositions from Hayao Miyazakis films Spirited Away (2001) and Howls Moving Castle (2004). Widely considered to be one of the greatest animated films of all time, Miyazakis Spirited Away tells the story of Chihiro Ogino who, after moving to a new town, stumbles into the spirit world and has to work to free her parents who have been transformed into pigs. The mystical and warm soundtrack comp...lements the wonder of Chihiro as she discovers more about the spirit world and herself. Following the successes of Spirited Away, Miyazakis Howls Moving Castle tells the story of a young woman named Sophie who is turned into an old woman by a witch. Sophie subsequently meets a wizard named Howl, and is caught up in a war that Howl is fighting in. Miyazaki was vocal in his opposition to the 2003 Iraq War and portrayed that in this film through its strong anti-war themes. Hisaishi composes a simultaneously playful and dramatic waltz for the main theme Merry-Go-Round of Life which complements well the whimsical nature of the characters Sophie meets on her adventure, coupled with the background war that is going on throughout the film.
