25.01.2022 On the anniversary of next year’s Accession which falls on the 6th of February 2022, the Queen will have been on the throne for seventy years. Earlier this month, on the 12th of January, the British Parliament met to establish an All-Party Parliamentary Group called The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Society of the Houses of Parliament, to discuss ways and means to best mark this Jubilee which is a milestone never before passed by a monarch in the shared history of the United Kin...gdom, Australia and the other fourteen Commonwealth Realms. Our federal and state parliaments should follow that of other countries who have as their sovereign Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and establish an all-party parliamentary group to, in an equitable fashion, jointly plan nationwide events to celebrate this momentous occasion. Whilst Labor has as its policy the promotion of a republic, it should be put to them that celebrating such an historic achievement in the reign of the Queen of Australia, a title formally bestowed on her by a Labor government, should not preclude them from joining in an all-party group to properly celebrate this occurrence. After all, the Queen is head of the parliament in which they serve and all federal politicians have all sworn or affirmed to ‘be faithful and bear true allegiance’ to her. The oath they must constitutionally make before taking their seat is: I, A.B., do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Her heirs and successors according to law. So help me God! The Queen has been our sovereign for nearly sixty percent of our existence as a nation since Federation and the Platinum Jubilee of her reign is an event which all Australians should properly honour and celebrate. It will be history in the making. To contact your local Federal MP or Senator, click here https://www.aph.gov.au//guidelines_for_contacting_senators With my best wishes for 2021. Let us all hope that it will be a far better year than the one just passed. Yours sincerely Philip Benwell National Chair

19.01.2022 Happy 73rd wedding anniversary to HM The Queen & HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

17.01.2022 As an individual who is both a proud young Aboriginal Man and a Monarchist, it’s sometimes difficult to balance my culture and family relationships with my belief in our Monarchy. My people are the Gumbaynggirr people of the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, who are a politically active mob (especially in progressive circles). I have always been a Monarchist, I love our Queen and I love our system of Constitutional Monarchy with its checks and balances. I write to you, my f...ellow AML members to give my support to Gladys Berejiklian’s recent call for a small change to our National Anthem. I know that many of you are Social Conservatives and may disagree with me, but I think this is a very conservative change. I don't agree with getting rid of our current Anthem, unless it is to ‘God Save The Queen’ but I think it is time for an update. A change to the Anthem doesn't diminish the fact that we are a Monarchy. I believe that a change will strengthen our democracy and encourage unity over division. The idea behind the change is to acknowledge the thousands of years of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander survival and cultures on our great continent. The one line change from For we are young and free to We are one and free is the best way to make our anthem more inclusive. Not only does it recognise our First Nations but it also acknowledges that Australia has become a much more mature, multicultural nation with a standard of living and lifestyle that is envied the world over. 14.01.2022 "Philip Benwell, National Chairman of the Australian Monarchist League, has noted Prince Charles's reign won't be similar to the one of the Queen after he spent more than five decades as Prince of Wales. Mr Benwell told Express.co.uk: "Prince Charles has made it clear that at present he is not governed by the same restrictions as his mother but when he becomes king he will be." Mr Benwell also believes the end of the Queen's reign will be a hard blow for many royal fans, but... Australians are prepared to welcome her heir on the throne. However, he acknowledged there is still some resistance among fans of Princess Diana: "A number of older Australians still mourn Princess Diana and blame Charles for the breakup of the marriage. "However, their numbers are declining and younger generations of Australians are not interested in the past and are quite prepared to welcome Prince Charles as King."

13.01.2022 Wishing a very Happy Birthday to William ‘Bill’ George Hayden AC, who was born on this day in 1933. Bill Hayden was the twenty-first Governor-General of Australia. Although a known republican, he didn’t support a Turnbull republic. In a debate at Circular Quay, Hayden argued against Hawke’s promotion of a Turnbull Republic. Hawke turned to Hayden saying, You didn’t used to think like that to which Hayden responded, I changed my mind. 08.01.2022 "Loyal Then, Loyal Now: Why I'm a Monarchist" By Mitch Ramsay-Mader I think anyone who lives in this great country and benefits from our constitutional framework can agree that no matter what your background, there are many reasons to support the Crown. I'm a constitutional monarchist because it is a system of government that is extremely effective in permitting the development of liberal democracies. However, the root of my convictions is much deeper and is partly to do with...Continue reading

07.01.2022 An article featuring our National Chair The Australian, 26th of October Republican’s say Charles letter shows he is ‘out of step’ as future head of state.... Australian Republicans say a letter that reveals Prince Charles supported the dismissal of the Whitlam government demonstrated he is out of step and showed the absurdity of the royal family. The Weekend Australian on Saturday published correspondence sent in 1976 from Charles to then governor-general John Kerr in which the future king supported the dismissal of Gough Whitlam’s government five months earlier. The Republican Movement’s national director, Sandy Biar, said the letter showed the future king of Australia considered his role should advocate policy. It does appear that Charles has encouraged John Kerr not only to keep up his morale but to agree with the political decision that he made, Mr Biar said. We wouldn’t expect to see Queen Elizabeth to be making statements like this who has worked very hard to stay out of politics, he said. These comments are out of step with the role of someone who is likely to be the head of state. Australian Republic Movement chair Peter FitzSimons tweeted the absurdity of the relationship between Australia’s then governor-general and future head of state was highlighted by the letters. It does highlight the absurdity of it all, he tweeted. Here is Australia’s future king, reaching out to support the man who sacked Australia’s democratically elected leader! The national chairman of the Australian Monarchist League, Philip Benwell, said the letter was not evidence that Charles had supported the dismissal or a sign that he interfered in Australian politics. Charles wrote to Sir John Kerr to sympathise with him because John Kerr was being vilified and coming under intense attack, Mr. Benwell said. He said that basically you don’t need to worry (about) what you did and what a courageous thing to do. I think the majority of people would look on the letter as an act of kindness. The Weekend Australian revealed the contents of the hand-written letter Charles wrote to Sir John without the Queen’s authority. What you did last year was the right and courageous thing to and most Australians seemed to endorse your decision when it came to the point, Charles wrote. I can imagine that you must have come in for all sorts of mis-informed criticism and prejudice since I saw you in January and I wanted you to know that I, at any rate, appreciate what you do and admire enormously the way you have performed (and continue to perform) your many and varied duties. 06.01.2022 The Governor, as the representative of HM The Queen, does not participate in the political process. The primary role of the Governor is to ensure Queensland (or the relevant state), enjoys stable government that commands the popular support of the Parliament and can pass supply. The Governor has a number of specific roles prior to, and immediately following, an election: - Dissolving Parliament... - Issuing the Writ causing the election of 93 Members of the Legislative Assembly - Receiving the return of the Writ following an election - Commissioning a Government and appointing Ministers of the Crown, and members of Executive Council
