25.01.2022 It's terrifc news in terrible times the venues named below will receive assistance from the Victorian Government. Good onya Premier Andrews and Minister Foley! Now, if you get a gig at any of these venues, make sure you tell them: I'm a member of Musicians Australia. We stand up for the value of our art, skills, and performance. We demand guaranteed minimum fees, and we'll never undercut. Will you support us, in the same way the government has supported you?"...Continue reading

25.01.2022 If a gig is being paid for by taxpayers, it should pay musicians a minimum fee. Do you agree? Let us know

24.01.2022 Fantastic inaugural meeting of the Musicians Australia Music Teaching Working Group tonight! If you want to get involved, send our page a message. Watch this space.

21.01.2022 Do you think its right that a venues business model relies on donations to pay musicians fees? Musicians should not have to rely on donations for their income. Demand fair fees.... Join your union. https://musiciansaustralia.org.au/

21.01.2022 Great to see Musicians speaking up in Canberra. What Musicians Australia would add to this message is: make sure Government money for the industry gets to musicians. Minimum guaranteed fees for Gigs and no undercutting! Right?

20.01.2022 We spend a lot of time, everyday, talking to musicians and other music industry people. Were about connecting the dots, making sure musicians have a say and that we have a plan to fix the industry that makes sense. Our plan is for minimum performance fees, no undercutting and safe gigs. Recently we heard from a music industry person who says:"it cant be about the money, has to be about passion" Is it really a zero sum game? Is it ok to play for passion but not money? (whatever playing for passion means). Is it fair to suggest you have to prioritise passion above making a living? What other industries do you know of where its ok to base commercial viability on workers donating their time, skill...and passion?

20.01.2022 Have you ever been ripped off by venues like this? Let us know in the comments!

20.01.2022 Looks like a sensible solution will be found, which is promising. Musicians Australia obviously (well, we hope its clear by now) supports regulations that assist music venues. Why? Because musicians wanna play! But, get this, the main thing we need, as the most important priority, is for musicians to be paid minimum guarantees, which comes with our promise not to undercut.... So, do the venues you play at, and the other music organisations you belong to, support minimum fees for gigs? Better start asking! Sydney's live music venues slipping through the cracks NSW Health will review an edict which allowed arts audiences to be expanded but left out hotels, which make up half the state's music venues. http://www.smh.com.au//we-want-to-do-the-best-we-can-sydne

16.01.2022 The cuts to JobKeeper and JobSeeker will make things very difficult for musicians. The music industry contributes billions to our economy and creates tens of thousands of jobs and will be vital to our economic and cultural recovery. Lets send Government a message that they need to fix this. We need them to act to Keep Music Alive.... Email your MP now: https://musiciansaustralia.org.au/keep-music-alive/

15.01.2022 This person says that Governments need to consult businesses on the effects of the COVID restrictions. We agree. But we have to point out that the Federal Government has failed to engage workers in the Arts and Entertainment industry about any of the effects and consequences of this crisis. We need a louder voice. Governments and business cant get our industry back without us. Join Musicians Australia, have your say, make sure Gigs are safe, that performers are paid minimum fees and stop undercutting. Www.musiciansaustralia.org.au

10.01.2022 Tonight weve reached a milestone. Half a million dollars earned by Australian musicians on MDCH! On their behalf, thank you for your incredible support! A spec...ial welcome to the Victorian Minister for Creative Industries, Martin Foley, who has joined us online for this evenings MCO concert and kindly prepared this introduction to mark the occasion. Were honoured to have him with us tonight! A big thank you to Creative Victoria, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, and our founding partners 5stream, the Athenaeum Theatre and Kawai Australia.

09.01.2022 This was sent in by one of our members last week and it got us thinking. What can be done to support musicians right now? Let us know how youre going in the comments

08.01.2022 Australian musicians are world class. Its a global industry. And its been that way for a long time. Hard to think about international touring right now, but Musicians Australia supports all efforts to assist musicians tap into global markets. But our members say that its just as important to fix our local industry. Most musicians depend on local gigs and our domestic industry. This industry is our nursery, proving ground and home base. Lets set a floor on fees for performance and make sure all gigs pay a minimum fee. https://www.theage.com.au//singer-jenny-morris-says-musici

08.01.2022 As a matter of policy we dont name and shame on this page. Thats because were focussed on building capacity and better organisation among musicians to ensure that proper standards, our standards, are understood, respected and enforced. That way we will make a better industry. So its very impressive to see this from an unnamed venue. A step in the right direction. Great work! Musicians Australia stands for minimum fees for performance and no undercutting.

08.01.2022 Many musicians work multiple jobs. You could be a teacher or hospitality worker, a doctor, driver, early childhood educator, a construction worker, nurse or a public servant. Have you asked: does the union for your other job support Musicians Australia? When they hire musicians will they pay a minimum fee? Worth asking them I think. Already the Victorian Trades Hall Council and some other regional trades hall groups have endorsed us. Why dont you ask your other Union. Im sure theyll do the right thing!

07.01.2022 In detailing the assistance package for the live music industry the minister has listed all the music businesses targeted (including organisers, promoters, and venues) except the business of being a musician! Paul In case you have forgotten, there is no live music without us. 05.01.2022 The extension of JobKeeper and Jobseeker is welcome. But its not good enough. Many if not most musicians miss out on JobKeeper already and now those on JobSeeker will be forced to look for work outside of the industry. This is a decision of the Federal Government, which unmistakably just does not get it. Music is the most productive sector in the Arts and Entertainment industry. Thats a fact. It contributes billions to our economy. It should sustain thousands of workers, but it is being put into jeopardy by Government failure. Are Arts and Entertainment workers somehow less deserving of assistance than other workers? Are they wealthier? Have their rents and power bills been cut? Of course not. Lets send Government a message that they need to fix this. We need them to act to Keep Music Alive.

05.01.2022 Thanks for the tip Greg, and it’s quite helpful the club has left a phone number...

05.01.2022 The Live Events Industry Forum says this: Ultimately, our principles and our commitment to the world-leading health and hygiene practices will define how quickly we can get government agreement to host larger crowds, and then attract people through the turnstiles. I have complete confidence we have the knowledge, expertise and above all the commitment to do exactly what we say we will: protect the health of our customers. What Id like to know is how these businesses intend... to attract people through the turnstiles without workers, crew, technicians and performers? Have they been talking to you? Have they been asking you what the rules should be for safe gigs? Please let us know.

04.01.2022 Now that *some* governments are putting money into the industry for recovery, lets make sure musicians get paid. We are calling for all gigs supported with government money to come with a guaranteed fair fee.

02.01.2022 We reckon if Governments can support big business through international trade deals they can also stop the rip off of musicians with an international rule change. https://www.abc.net.au//h/should-spotify-pay-more/12892046

01.01.2022 Is this an announcement about an annoucement that was made 6 weeks ago? and is this repeated announcement about actually doing anything now? One thing is clear, the money is not directly aimed at Musicians. The Minister thinks that businesses should run the music industry, but not the businesses of musicians, apparently. Just the businesses of events organisers and venues. Well, we have nothing against other businesses, but they know, and we know, that there will be no shows without Musicians...and the Music Businesses that they run. So, demand minimum guarantees for your (taxpayer subsidised) Gigs!
