25.01.2022 Those darn scales! Are they helping or hindering? Tell us your thoughts below

25.01.2022 At our 2018 obesity surgery conference (ANZMOSS), psychologist Leah Brennan told us that studies clearly suggest that early post surgery behaviours, including eating behaviours, do predict long term outcomes.. What this means is that it is never too early to get your act together! Getting the foundations of a healthy lifestyle in place will help ensure your long term success.

24.01.2022 Establish the foundations of a healthy lifestyle and surgery will magnify the amount of weight you lose. Instead of perhaps losing 2 4 kg, you may well lose 20 40 kg, or more sometimes. Think of it like interest you get from the bank. They offer interest on cash deposits. But if you don’t make a deposit, you get no interest. If you make a deposit, the bank gives you interest and your deposit grows. ... If you work hard and put in even more money, you get even more interest. Justin Bessell | AMOS Surgeon

22.01.2022 There are factors that predict whether you are likely to maintain or regain weight. Factors that predict weight maintenance: Improved control over food urges Improved control over eating habits... Self monitoring. Factors that predict weight regain include: Lack of control over food urges Concerns over drug and alcohol use Poor postoperative wellbeing Poor adherence to follow up. 22.01.2022 Weight loss surgery speeds up delivery of alcohol into the bloodstream, causing higher and longer peaks in blood alcohol level. This is the difference between losing your licence or not. If you have had a bypass or sleeve, don't drink and drive.... Even one drink could put you over the limit, especially in the first hour.

22.01.2022 Whilst the health improvements can be remarkable, the impact of weight loss surgery on people's personal lives cannot be overlooked. This article provides fabulous insight into some of the struggles people experience after weight loss surgery. http://ed.gr/b0hyc

20.01.2022 Who and what you chose to tell people is completely up to you. Some people choose to be upfront (hashtag it and post it), and others quite private. Others have planned on not telling people, but then later on down the track have felt comfortable having that conversation. ... There is absolutely no right, or wrong. Chris | AMOS Psychologist

16.01.2022 An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but seven apples on a Sunday probably won't. The key to success is consistency.

16.01.2022 So very true in all areas of our lives, including weight loss surgery. There is no overnight success. Consistency is truly where the magic happens.

14.01.2022 How does weight loss surgery work? I think we have a fairly good understanding of this now. Quite simply, surgery magnifies the benefit of your healthy lifestyle. We often see patients who have decided they don’t like the way they are, and they would like to get healthy. So they try to eat sensibly, and be physically active, but are frustrated to discover that they are only losing a few kilos, when they know they may have to lose 30, 40 or even 60 kg to be medically healthy.... Even worse, when they take their foot off the gas, the weight goes straight back on. This cycle then repeats itself many times. Happily surgery does 2 important things: (a) It magnifies the amount of weight you lose form your healthy lifestyle so you DO get the reward you deserve for the effort you are putting in, and (b) When you continue to a healthy lifestyle, that weight doesn’t go back on, which is great! It breaks the vicious cycle, and is very motivating for patients to see their efforts paying off. I guess you could consider it like getting interest on a bank deposit; the bank doesn’t give you interest on a zero balance! But the harder you work, the more money you save, and the more interest you get. Just like surgery! Unfortunately there are some things surgery CAN’T do: It is not there to be a safety net to save you from yourself. It does not make up for the bad things you do, or good things you don’t doit only magnifies the good things you do DO. So it’s important to use surgery in the right way and we will guide you how to achieve this so you get the success you deserve and the health you are entitled to. Justin Bessell | AMOS Surgeon

11.01.2022 How often are we thinking, or be heard saying, things like ‘I need to be more active’, or ‘be more prepared with my food’, or maybe ‘I need to save more money’. We may blame motivation for our lack of change in behaviour, or that there will be a right time in the future to make that change. But what if we are never more motivated than we are right now, or that future time never seems to arrive? ... Maybe we have a nearly full cup of motivation already, and maybe today is the best time that there will ever be? We can spend a great deal of time thinking and puzzling over when to make a change. Sometimes though we need to just take some action forward, even a small step, and that demonstration of intention may be enough for us to push ahead in a meaningful and purposeful way. I often say, "Sometimes allow your head follow your feet." Chris | AMOS Psychologist

11.01.2022 "I started to go to dinner with a group of women who had all had the surgery. I saw that they all still ate 'normal' food but just didn’t eat much. In fact they all shared meals." Yes, that's right. Normal food, but less of it.... That is the goal. Thanks for sharing your story, Kathryn. http://ed.gr/b0few

03.01.2022 If I got a dollar for every time a client told me before surgery I am just not an exercise person I would be a millionaire. But once we delve into the why and what, that have led to clients feeling this way, it usually comes down to a fear of failure due to a preconceived idea about what exercise is and what ‘fit’ is supposed to look like. Remember to exercise right, is to exercise for you. It’s about finding movement that makes you happy, so that you become happy to move... If you have put exercise in the too hard basket for whatever reason, please come and talk to us so we can help you find the exercise that works for you.
