25.01.2022 Some more exciting stuff as part of WAMJAM. Check it out if you're in Perth and get in touch if you're interested in running something similar!
25.01.2022 Hey All, Just popping in to let you know some key things going on with the APA after our recent committee meeting. COVID 19:... Obviously there are a lot of challenges in everyone's lives right now and we've seen the impact of that across our community. I've been impressed by how people have adapted and worked to support each other during this time. Here at the APA we have been trying to get behind some of the great initiatives springing up, such as a Parkour lecture series being hosted by Melbourne in Motion https://www.facebook.com/events/660690934755408/ If you are working on or know of any initiatives being setup that could use some support, either financially or otherwise, send me an email! [email protected]. Also feel free to plug any virtual jams / workshops by commenting on this post. We are slowly compiling information specific to training Parkour in the midst of this pandemic, but for now, make sure you stay safe and follow the local guidelines to help minimise the spread. Instructor Quals: Our delivery time for these took a massive hit as a result of the pandemic, but I'm pleased to report we are well on our way to having a revamped system in place by the time we can all get back out there. Our next committee meeting is in June and we have put together a rigid, though somewhat hectic, review schedule so that we have this new version of the quals to vote in at that meeting. You can check out that schedule here: https://docs.google.com//1BYFPigjhKP3NGjSaeunPvWyYVE/edit. Concurrently we are developing the platform where the qual will be managed. This should eliminate those "am I qualled?/my paperwork got lost/what do I need to do?" issues we've currently got. Once we have that vote at the next meeting, the whole system will be rolled out for beta testing by the community. If you'd like to get involved in the qual review process you can join our delivery team. Just email [email protected] for more information. Everything Else: Those are the two biggies we are working on. There are a few legacy issues and other things we are cleaning up behind the scenes to make sure the APA can meet the needs of the Australian community. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions. Look after yourselves and those around you if you can. I'm looking forward to the massive jam we're gonna have once we get through this. <3 Liam President | Australian Parkour Association
24.01.2022 The next in our series of Lectures for Parkour Instructors is Neurodiversity and Inclusion with Paula Flinn, on Sunday! 6:30pm AEST Go to @melbinmotion for a link to the zoom meeting in their bio Real inclusion isn't about ticking off a checklist. It is about connected and caring relationships, and it can only happen when we are willing to listen to disabled people and work with them to ensure our spaces and services are meeting everyone's needs. In "Neurodiversity & Inclusiv...ity" Paula will challenge the dominant narrative surrounding autism and other disabilities, as we explore and consider the Neurodiversity Paradigm and the Social Model of Disability. She will look at how understanding and embracing these concepts is vital in ensuring our classes and communities are safe and inclusive for neurodivergent children and adults. Paula is a movement loving, neurodivergent woman; eternally optimistic and curious about everything. She started training Parkour in 2016 and fell in love. The movements were reminiscent of a childhood full of running, jumping, climbing, swinging, playing. Paula believes there is so much freedom, creativity, autonomy, and playfulness in Parkour, along with a very healthy dose of challenge and discomfort, that she won’t ever stop. Parkour has supported her to strengthen the relationship she has with her body, mind and soul, and trust in their capabilities. She has never felt so strong (at 38, with three young children), both physically and mentally. Paula has worked as a group fitness instructor and personal trainer in the past, but none of that satisfied her in the way Parkour does. The clear integration of the physical and spiritual aspects of the practice, along with the parallels it has to the challenges and struggles we face in everyday life, are like nothing else I have experienced. Paula is also a Breathwork Facilitator, and is fascinated by the ways in which we can integrate and weave together healing with movement. 19.01.2022 NatGat (the National Gathering of Parkour in Australia) has been a beloved tradition in the Australian Parkour landscape for many years. Last year, as many will recall, brought about some questions regarding the APA's role in facilitating or organising this event. The 2019-2020 Australian Parkour Association Committee is not equipped to organise and run an event of such scale and do it justice. Neither do we want to take a community focused event and turn it into an ‘Associat...ion’ event. Keeping NatGat in the hands of the community is important to us. NatGat has grown over the years to become more than just training together in one place. It has become a landmark of unity, community, passion and expression, which highlights the diversity of Australian practitioners. NatGat has been the backdrop for many great friendships, memories and achievements, and we are eager to see this yearly tradition continue with the same level of enthusiasm as we’ve seen in the past. Something that impacted the running of the 2019 NatGat was the process of deciding upon a host city. The APA has no intention of making this decision on your behalf, but what we would like to see is some structure to the decision-making process. We propose returning to a bidding process so everyone can get an impression of what host cities intend to offer at their location. The APA is also looking to support potential host city’s with their event to make sure 2020 NatGat can be as awesome as it can be. The APA is aware of the Government restrictions that are currently limiting the scale of outdoor gatherings. But we are about six months out from the usual dates, so there's no harm starting some planning now and hoping for the best. It's worth noting that it is possible that gathering restrictions will not relax enough in time for when NatGat would normally happen. If this is the case, we are open to supporting alternative plans to mark the occasion anyway. After all, we're Parkour Practitioners - it is our lifestyle to adapt. In previous years, NatGat has fallen in late September into early October starting on a Thursday and concluding on the Monday. For 2020 the closest dates are probably Thursday the 1st of October through to Monday the 4th of October. Feel free to propose alternatives however. It is very early days and we're not expecting any communities to have fully fledged itineraries or event outlines. However, what would help us is a simple email to [email protected] to simply say, 'Yo, we're interested in hosting NatGat 2020!', and include any details you think relevant. Once we get an indication at the interest, we can begin the bidding process and go from there. More to come on how this process will pan out, so stay tuned here. If there's any questions about the APA’s involvement with NatGat 2020, please direct them to [email protected] and I'll be sure to get back to you with an answer as soon as I can! Sincerely, Mitch Robinson :)

16.01.2022 Hi Everyone! It's been about a month since we posted about NatGat 2020 and asked potential hosts to get in contact with us. So far we haven't heard anything. We understand there might be reluctance to come forward due to COVID-19 and everything which has gone with it, and that is more than fair. Despite this, we're still keen to assist in organising something like a NatGat to help celebrate our passion for movement. It'd be helpful for us to have a outline of a plan before ou...r next Committee Meeting on the 28th of June. So, we propose the following: - Groups/Individuals looking to host NatGat 2020 for later this year in October are still welcome to send an email through to [email protected] so we can form a list of bidders. This will remain an option up until our meeting on June 28th. - Individuals are now welcome to send through an email (to [email protected]) and give an inspiration or suggestion for an event through which we can collectively celebrate our love for movement in style. - Also, from the 14th of June through to the 28th of June, our National Representative Kyle will reach out to some community leaders directly to see if you're interested in coordinating something. Whether this is NatGat or something else will have to be decided through those discussions. We don't want to let the coronavirus situation divide us from our passion, and we're invested in keeping to the yearly NatGat tradition - even if that means it has to look a little different this time around. Let us know if you have any thoughts on these proposals and be sure to get in touch if you have any ideas or are interested in running an event. We hope you are all staying well and taking care. <3 Mitch
16.01.2022 The APA is proud to announce that we are committing to several further years of membership with Parkour Earth. From the beginnings of PKE we have been a keen supporter and vocal member nation, advocating at all opportunities for more community consultation and participation in grassroots parkour culture. Now that PKE has begun dedicated communication with grassroots practitioners, businesses and community leaders in the form of global engagement sessions we couldn’t be more e...xcited to be a part of our international federation. We are excited to see Parkour Earth grow and support our community in ways our practice has never seen before. It already provides us with a forum to collaborate with similar organisations in New Zealand, France, the UK, Poland, South Africa. Finland, Switzerland, The USA, and more. We are particularly excited about the growing engagement with the wider world beyond Europe and the Anglosphere. This is a chance to pool our resources around community driven projects to make a bigger and better global Parkour family. To that end we are putting an advance of membership fees towards the PKE effort to really help get things off the ground. We hope to show our long term dedication to community driven organisations and international cooperation in Parkour. We encourage other member organisations and interested parties to join in our effort to build an international federation that makes us all proud! Stay safe and keep moving, Ross McGachey APA International Representative
