25.01.2022 We are very proud to introduce our second committee member for Stories 2021, Kate Disher-Quill (@katedisherquill). Kate is an artist working across photography, film, publication and multimedia. Much of Kate's art practice focusses on collaborative and multidimensional approaches to storytelling, such as her publication Earshot which portrays the myriad of experiences of deafness and hearing loss, intersecting art and storytelling with health and education. The second image ...of this post is a diptych from Surge, a recent collaboration between Kate and Phoebe Powell (@phoebepowellphoto) for @photofestivalau which is currently on display to the public in Swanston St, Melbourne. #Stories2021 #australianphotography #collaborativeartists #australianphotographyawards

21.01.2022 In our final winner announcement, we are so pleased to announce that the People’s Choice winner for 2020 is Rachael Tagg Rachael Tagg Photography Rachael’s powerful image speaks to all of us. By positioning the innocence of childhood against the foreboding smoke on the horizon, Rachael effectively shows the audience what it was like growing up during the 2019 - 2020 Black Summer. We want to extend our congratulations to all our amazing entrants. Thank you to everyone who submitted this year. These awards are only as strong as the artists submitting to them, and they were stronger this year than ever before. Thank you once again to our brilliant sponsors Nikon, FUJIFILM Australia, Momento Pro and Kayell Australia. Together we are all Australian Photography Awards.
18.01.2022 As we draw to a close for another year, we would like to take a moment to appreciate how challenging yet amazing 2020 has been not only for ourselves, but for our entire community. Although there have been difficulties working in the arts this year, we feel that together we have all taken part in contributing to a collective creativity. In a year which could have been isolating, we have grown as an organisation and a community, and feel more inspired than ever before by the ...incredible work being made by Australian photographers. This year we launched Stories, our new award for long-form visual narrative and we were absolutely blown away by the quality and depth of work that we discovered. Our annual single-image award, Australian Photography Awards received more entries than any other year and the high standard of imagery that we had the privilege of considering proved that Australian photographers are creating some of the strongest work to date against any odds. In early 2021 we will be formally announcing some changes in the direction our organisation is moving. We will be growing an umbrella organisation which will continue to run our competitions, Australian Photography Awards and Stories as well as allow us to better pursue our ethos of expanding this incredible community while celebrating the diverse and ever-changing face of Australian photography. Until then, we wish you all a well deserved break. Please take the time to enjoy the things which matter to you the most, and if you find it in yourself to do so, create some more incredible imagery. Thank you all for standing by us, and each other this year. We’ll see you in January! Team APA Image by the brilliant Glenn Homann @blueboy70
11.01.2022 We can't wait to see all the beautiful photographs our community creates while out and about this summer! How about this amazing finalist image that Naomi Rose @naomirosephoto entered into this years APA? This image, aptly titled 'Blending In', brilliantly balances great photography and humour whilst teaching us something about the ecosystem of Ningaloo Reef. Congratulations Naomi, we're looking forward to seeing what you bring us next year!
11.01.2022 Thank you so much to all the wonderful people who joined us for our 2020 feedback sessions this week. What a wonderful opportunity to talk with you all further and learn more about your projects. We look forward to seeing what you work on over the holidays. Team APA. 07.01.2022 We are so pleased to welcome Mags King (@mags__king) to the 2021 Stories committee! As the managing photo editor at @sydneymorningherald, Mags is responsible for leading an incredible team of photojournalists. Coming off the back of APA 2020 where Mags sat on the Portrait committee, Mags has also been a photographic judge for @thewalkleys, @amnesty, @indianphotofest and @sunstudios. With her immense experience and understanding of Australian photography, we can't wait to see how she reacts to all of your great visual narratives! #stories2021 #australianphotography #photojournalism #photoeditor #australianphotographyawards
05.01.2022 Happy 2021 legends! This is Tom Goldner here today. I’m one of the creative directors behind APA. Normally Harriet and I stay behind the scenes to make APA run but today I’m here to tell you about a project I’ve been working on with my buddy and collaborator (and APA content dude) Angus Scott. Our project Do Brumbies Dream in Red? explores anthropologic change in the Australian landscape through the use of conceptual photography and moving image. So why all this talk about br...umbies? We are going to be taking a deep dive into that this week and start sharing our work here. Excitingly we have major exhibition and book launch kicking off at Meat Market Stables, North Melbourne between 5th - 14th February. The event is free via registration - https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/do-brumbies-dream-in-red-ti
