24.01.2022 UPDATE FOR MELBOURNE MEMBERS: We have received notification that group allied health interventions will return on 8 November. Whilst we welcome the easing of restrictions and are glad that this date is not far away, we have been advocating for the prompt return of small group health interventions as a priority. We will continue to advocate for the prioritisation of health in the ongoing COVID-19 roadmap.... Further information on density quotients is still to come.

23.01.2022 In the lead up to #CloseTheGap Day on 18 March, racism is something we need to talk about. It’s an ugly word. A visceral word. It makes us uncomfortable, it evokes our fight or flight response. Well it should, for there is nothing positive about this word. Ray Gates, a Bundjalung man and physiotherapist of more than 18 years calls for national action on the global impact of systemic racism in physiotherapy. 23.01.2022 The latest iteration of the Industry Restart Guidelines Allied Health and Primary Care effective as of 11.59pm 27 October is below. https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/coronavirus-sector-guida Metro Melbourne has now entered the Third Step.... Public Health has confirmed that indoor group therapies will be permitted for metro Melbourne in the Last Step the timing of which is subject to Public Health epidemiological modelling and advice. For clinical settings, indoor groups (when permitted) will need to operate with a density quotient of 1 person per 4 square metres, maximum number of 10 people per group (practitioners excluded from group numbers). For health professionals who provide clinical services in a fitness industry setting (ie. public/commercial gym) a density quotient of 1 person per 8 square metres will apply with a maximum group size of 10 people (practitioners excluded from group numbers). Unfortunately, this Public Health advice is not clearly articulated in the guidelines and we are awaiting further amendment to the document to ensure clear and consistent messaging. For practitioners who operate services from a residential address (i.e. their or another practitioner’s home), Public Health has confirmed the requirement for the premise to have a separate patient/client access point.

22.01.2022 SA MEMBERS Masks are now mandatory for all allied health practitioners when treating patients, regardless of setting. We are seeking further details on supply from SA Health and will update as soon as we have this.

22.01.2022 Medicines are just a small part of the management of back pain and osteoarthritis. Other options such as exercise, physiotherapy and maintaining a healthy weight help manage the pain. Things to think about: What might be causing the pain? What are the risks and benefits of this medicine?... How long should I take this medicine? Is there anything else I can do to help the pain? 22.01.2022 GREATER BRISBANE LOCKDOWN From 6pm tonight, Friday 8 January, until 6pm Monday 11 January people in the local government areas of Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Redlands and Logan will be required to stay at home except for essential exercise, food and supplies, access to health/medical care and work which cannot be performed remotely. Masks are now mandatory in these LGA’s outside of the home. QLD Health has not included allied health, including physiotherapy practices, on ...its list of business that must close. It is therefore our advice that physiotherapy practices may remain open. Practices must adhere to one person per 4 square metres, with maximum of 20 to 50 with COVID Safe or Industry Plan for this period. Although specific new guidelines have not been provided regarding groups and classes, we advise numbers should be kept small and allow for appropriate distancing. Please continue to adhere to strict hygiene practices. We will keep you updated as the situation develops. For more information, go to https://www.qld.gov.au//current-/greater-brisbane-lockdown

18.01.2022 VALE KAREN SCHNEIDER It is with sadness that we advise of the passing of one of our highly esteemed Honoured Members, Karen Schneider, who peacefully passed away after a long battle with cancer on Friday evening, 20 November. Karen was a remarkable person and clinician, and contributed greatly to our profession in many ways. ... After joining the APA in 1976, her first physiotherapy job was at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, but it wasn’t until Karen moved to Darwin that she became very active in the APA. She was NT Branch Councillor for nine years and Branch President for two terms. More recently, she was involved in the leadership of the Physiotherapy Business Group and represented the Northern Territory at the National Advisory Council. Even after relinquishing her formal duties after many years’ service, Karen remained the ‘go to’ person in the NT for anything of importance to the profession. She was a tireless advocate, and led the charge in discussions with government to improve physiotherapy services at the Royal Darwin Hospital. Few professional development events were delivered in the NT without Karen’s generous guidance and support. Karen’s love of sport was the backbone of her career. She served on the Board of Sports Medicine Australia for more than 10 years and enjoyed a long-term relationship with NT Netball, travelling extensively with the team and being awarded life membership of Darwin Netball. Karen became a titled APA Sports Physiotherapist in 2002 and provided physio services to athletes at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006. Karen is survived by her three children, Murray, Katie and Anthony, and her adored grandchildren.

18.01.2022 PPE ADVICE FOR NSW AND VIC MEMBERS Eye protection is no longer required for Tier 1 PPE in Victoria. This applies to patient-facing healthcare workers who are providing care and/or treatment to patients assessed as low risk or no risk for COVID-19, against the clinical criteria for COVID-19. This advice replaces the advice on the conventional use of PPE published on 21 October 2020. https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/personal-protective-equipment-p NSW Health services have now move...d from amber to green alert. An important aspect of this is the corresponding use of PPE. Most staff do not need to wear a surgical mask when within 1.5 metres of a patient. Mask wearing is still required for staff working in emergency departments and for all staff when attending to patients who have an acute respiratory infection. Patients presenting to the emergency department should continue to be encouraged to wear masks. Most other patients are not required to wear masks. The use of PPE for any suspected, probable or confirmed case of COVID-19 remains unchanged. A full matrix of infection prevention and control practices under each alert level is available with the Infection Prevention and Control Response Framework together with posters to support communication with staff and patients. The fundamental principles of infection prevention and control, including maintaining physical distancing, regular hand hygiene and cough etiquette must continue to be applied across all settings.

11.01.2022 VICTORIAN MEMBERS The summary of last step restrictions for metro Melbourne and regional Victoria (effective 11.59pm, 22 November 2020) have limited changes for allied health and primary care providers as follows: Indoor group therapies in clinical treatment settings and fitness industry settings may increase to a maximum of 20 participants (within density quotients). Indoor group therapy classes conducted in a fitness industry setting may now operate with a density quot...ient of 1 to 4 sq metres (previous density quotient was 1 to 8 sq metres). This brings into alignment the density quotients for clinical treatment settings and fitness industry settings. Outdoor group therapies may increase to a maximum cap of 50 participants. Owing to the proximity to other participants and potential for contact, face masks should still be worn by all participants. Caps on group sizes for hydrotherapy in indoor and outdoor pools have been removed, however a density quotient of 1 to 4 sq metres still applies. Restrictions on the purpose, number and time limits for visitors to hospital and care facilities have been removed, but remain subject to the rules/regulations of each individual facility. We are awaiting further info from DHHS on provisions for therapy services operating from a residential address, and will update you ASAP. https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/coronavirus-covid-19-res

06.01.2022 In June, the federal Department of Health changed the rules about how opioid medications were prescribed to tackle a rise in hospital admissions and deaths related to the drugs. Physiotherapy is proven to provide effective pain relief, which treats, rather than simply masks, the underlying cause of chronic pain. As there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach in assessing and treating someone’s pain, physios are practiced in considering a range of factors that may be contributin...g to the pain, in order to introduce an appropriate treatment including exercise programs, joint manipulation and mobilisation. Chronic pain is a complex health issue. Though it is individuals who suffer the severe, debilitating symptoms, the burden extends across the whole of society. Physiotherapy has been proven effective in the early intervention and management of pain. https://www.abc.net.au//pain-sufferers-say-limiti/13219230 ABC Australia
