22.01.2022 We are extremely grateful knowing that no matter what is happening in the world, our artists and creatives are still tucked away in their homes, in their studios dreaming up exciting new works for us to experience and enjoy in the near future. One such artist that APW has had a long and rich history working with is Jan Senbergs. Elena Taylor, Senior Curator at UNSW, poignantly notes "To look at Jan Senbergss work is to be immediately struck by its sheer visual inventiveness.... He is both a creator of fantastical imagery as well as an acute observer, whose paintings, drawings and prints veer between the densely claustrophobic and the wildly exuberant." --- Jan Senbergs Studio Pieces Edition: 10 Image size: 24cm 32.5cm Paper size: 38.5cm 48cm Etching: hard ground printed from 1 plate Drawn on the plate by the artist and printed by APW Senior Printer Martin King at Australian Print Workshop, Melbourne, 1992 ---

14.01.2022 Meaning is something the viewer attributes or brings to works of art. It is constructed out of our own experience and mediated by a complex repertoire of both visible clues and subtle cultural conventions. In the absence of discernable likenesses to either the visible world or our socially mediated signs and symbols, we must seek meanings deeper in the layers of our experience. Amidst the plethora of fine lines, of elusive dots and nuanced layering, the attentive eye can ente...r stealthily, tentatively - as though into a secret garden, or perhaps a labyrinth of sorts - into a private world, as much ones own as the artists. Mitelman invariably interposes a quiet geometry into or against the infinity and apparent formlessness. Infinity contained, perhaps? Or, in T. S. Eliots much quoted words from Four Quartets, At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless; Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is.Paradoxically, both stillness and perpetual motion reside in the experience of looking at this enigmatic image. --- 2011 APW Collie Print Trust Printmaking Fellowship recipient Allan Mitelman (untitled #11) Edition: 15 Image size: 20cm 27cm Paper size: 28.5cm 38cm Etching: hard ground, crayon resist and chine-collé printed from 1 copper plate Drawn on the plate by the artist and printed by APW Senior Printer Martin King at APW, Melbourne 2011 ---

14.01.2022 In response to current government and health authorities advice and growing community concern regarding the constantly evolving COVID-19 environment, Australian Print Workshop has made the difficult decision to close from today (17 March 2020) until further notice. This means in effect that all of APWs public access programs are now suspended until further notice including our Open Access Studio, Gallery and all educational and other public programs. The health and wellbei...ng of our staff, artists, program participants, gallery visitors, audiences and wider communities is our priority in these challenging times as is the support of Australias public health workers and services. We join our fellow arts and cultural institutions in recognising that engagement with the arts is essential to our wellbeing and is particularly important in times of uncertainty. We aim to stay active on our social media platforms and website over the coming weeks and months to maintain valuable connections with our community. From the entire APW team, we are very grateful for your understanding and we extend our best wishes during this challenging time. 08.01.2022 The recent APW exhibition 'Crossing Paths' featured this beautiful print by Queensland artist Ron McBurnie. Like so much great art, it is the story behind the work that brings it to life that much more... Ron recalls that, "The print consists of three related sections and is part of a story Gail Mabo told me about Eddie Koiki Mabo planting a number of bush yam in the river bed of the Wadda Mooli Creek. After Mabo initially harvested them he forgot about one which eventually ...grew into a giant yam. When I later asked his daughter Gail about its shape, she told me it was flat, heart shaped and had grown in amongst the river rocks. He had to cut it out with a cane knife. Eddie then shared parts of the yam with families in his community. For me the story is a symbol of his caring and generous spirit." --- Ron McBurnie Heart shaped yam at Wadda Mooli Creek Edition: 20 Image size: 76cm 55.5cm Paper size: 76cm 55.5cm Lithograph Image drawn on the plates by the artist and printed by APW Printer Martin King at Australian Print Workshop, Melbourne, 2019. --- This limited-edition original fine art print is currently available for purchase from the APW webstore here: https://www.australianprintworkshop.com/artists/ron-mcburnie

06.01.2022 Australian Print Workshop awarded the 2005 APW Collie Print Trust Printmaking Fellowship to Aleks Danko. From there he created the series: SINGSONG IN SEVEN. Aleks Danko's Songs of Australia recast as scores. In seven sheets, the artist has caught the singsong of pragmatic creation which we repeat as we daily breathe in and out. If we repeat anything enough times, we will believe it; if we repeat it even more, its substance will float away. Both states - belief and absence - ...are given to us as images in Danko's singsong. Both states are repeated through Danko's icons until they are as solemn as a brick wall. In the first print, a text which is a study in repeats and echoes, falls across a yellow page of black music staves, proclaims a title, and poses something like an axiom or a belief. 01.01.2022 Robert Rauschenberg once explained, "I actually had a kind of house rule. If I walked completely around the block and didn't find enough to work with, I could take one other block and walk around it in any directionbut that was it. The works had to look at least as interesting as anything that was going on outside the window." 2012 Collie Print Trust Fellowship recipient Andrew Browne adopts a similar approach in constructing his images. He uses everyday urban detritus found... in his neighbourhood and in the midst of his travels; photos of random graffiti, branches washed up on the banks of inner city creeks, discarded wooden panels adorned with construction company logos and ripped pamphlets littering the streets.
