25.01.2022 A new study has discovered the impact of membranous urethral length (MUL) on continence outcomes following surgery to treat prostate cancer. Led by Dr Diwei Lin, the study showed that MUL had a positive association with continence over 12 months post-surgery and could help inform patients who are undergoing surgery. Dr Lin said the findings would provide helpful pre-surgery information for patients about the chances of urinary incontinence after surgery. ... By educating patients who might take longer to regain continence based on their MUL measurements, this could improve their psychological wellbeing and subsequently their overall quality of life. 21.01.2022 Not a day goes by that Brian McGrath isnt grateful to doctors and researchers for saving his life. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer nearly 14 years ago in 2006, after his PSA levels skyrocketed to 8.5. He was 64 years old at the time so he was able to undergo surgery to have his prostate removed, an outcome which proved lifesaving. Sadly, it was a different story a generation ago, when in 1981 Brians father succumbed to the disease within a year of diagnosis and no vi...able treatments at the time. This experience, which highlights the importance of supporting medical research and improving treatments, is why Brian donates regularly to APC. 20.01.2022 Professor Clive Prestidge is leading ground-breaking research to improve drugs like Zytiga. Zytiga works to treat prostate cancer by reducing testosterone. But the common side effectslow potassium, urinary tract infection, high blood pressure, fluid retention and bone fracturesas well as the lengthy fasting requirements, have a huge impact on patients. 14.01.2022 Critical work to prevent the spread of prostate cancer to other, often fatal, areas of the body has taken an important step forward in progressing to patient trials. The research is being led by Associate Professor Belinda Parker from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre whose team was the first to identify that Type I interferons (IFNs) proteins which are meant to activate the immune system upon infection dont work properly in cancer cells and are a key contributor to canc...er progression and spread. A/Prof Parkers exciting research was presented at a recent meeting hosted by the Centre for Cancer Biology and proudly sponsored by APC as part of The Hospital Research Foundation Group (THRF). 12.01.2022 A notable milestone has been notched up by the South Australian Prostate Cancer Clinical Outcomes Collaborative (SA PCCOC), an initiative proudly supported by APC. The 15,000th patient has been enrolled in SA PCCOCs prostate cancer registry, which helps to better understand and manage prostate cancer and improve patient outcomes. 04.01.2022 Riverland couple Charlene and Bill Santos had a tough year in 2014 enduring a double diagnosis of breast cancer in April followed by prostate cancer in October. Thankfully the pair survived their battles and are now fighting fit, enjoying life on their idyllic riverfront property and spending time with their four children and six grandchildren. They are grateful for the excellent treatment they received and have generously held fundraisers to support both prostate cancer an...d breast cancer research. Last October, they have held an open garden as part of the Riverland Rose Festival. Throughout the event, Charlene and Bills efforts raised a fantastic $1,821 for APC!
