15.01.2022 Know your Cyclone Warnings! Wet season in the Northern Territory means there's a risk for tropical cyclones. Understanding the different warnings issued by the Bureau of Meteorology when a cyclone is potentially heading for the Top End, is very important. Cyclone Watch (light orange area): When the onset of gales or strong is expected within 48 hours, but not within 24.... What to do: Check your emergency kit, clean up your yard from loose items, fill up water containers, check in with your neighbours to make sure they are aware of the situation, and keep up to date with current information. Cyclone Warning (dark orange area): When gales or strong winds in your area are expected within 24 hours or less. The warning can include the estimated strength of the cyclone, its category and likely movements. What to do: Stay safe indoors, strong winds may already occur. Have your emergency kit close by and stay up to date with current information. For more information about Cyclone Watch, Cyclone Warning and Tracking Maps, watch the video below by BOM.
15.01.2022 Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed that a La Niña has formed in the tropical Pacific. This mean we are likely to see more rain and cyclones than average in Australia. In other words, it looks like we might have a busy season ahead of us! Sign up to become a volunteer with Red Cross Emergency Services today so you are ready to support our community if required when these weather events hit the Northern Territory. https://www.redcross.org.au/get-involved/connect/volunteer
15.01.2022 It's that time of the year again! Red Cross Emergency Services' annual emergency exercise is taking place 6-7 November. This is a perfect opportunity to practice your skills, get an idea of what an emergency activation may look like, and meet other volunteers. We also need role players for the Saturday, so you can still come along even if you are not a Red Cross volunteer. Contact the team today!
14.01.2022 It is going to be a hot few days in the NT! The Bureau of Meteorology has forecasted extreme heatwave conditions in the next week and this means we will not only experience normal build-up weather, but unusual temperatures across the Top End. Although many of us may be used to our hot weather, heatwaves means hotter than normal and for at least three days in a row. In other words: time to crank that air con!... Stay cool and check out some great tips on how to look after yourself and others (who may be more vulnerable to hot weather) on Red Cross’ website: https://www.redcross.org.au//loo/heatwaves-and-hot-weather
14.01.2022 A big thank you to Activate Darwin and all the kids who attended our Pillowcase Program in Darwin yesterday! If you would like Red Cross to visit your school, library or kids group with the program, get in touch with the team today.... Below are some of the awesome pillowcases (soon to be emergency kits) decorated by the kids yesterday.

09.01.2022 Thank you to Bakewell Primary School for having us and our Pillowcase Program during National Emergency Preparedness Week! Our volunteers had a great time talking to the students about how to get ready for an emergency.
08.01.2022 Get Packing! This is the fourth and last step of RediPlan where getting practical and packing your emergency kit is an essential step in getting better prepared for an emergency. -THINK about the practical things you will need during and after an emergency. Survival items are things that will help if you have to evacuate your home quickly or if you have to stay in your home without essential services such as power. Recovery items are things that will help limit the disruption... to your life after the emergency has passed. -ACT and pack your items into an emergency kit. Make a list of all the things you need and then pack these into a waterproof box or container. Most of the things you need can be found at the supermarket, the $2 shop or maybe even already in your home. Remember the needs of everyone in your household, including babies, children and pets. -SHARE your kit with others by talking about what you have packed and what you consider important to pack. Make sure everyone in your household knows where the kit is stored. You can also help others pack their kit and it might also be a good idea to consider what things you have in your respective kits that could be useful to your support network. If you haven’t already, download a RediPlan today from the Red Cross website https://www.redcross.org.au/prepare. Or keep your plan with you at all times by downloading our Get Prepare App https://getprepared.app.link/es-nt
08.01.2022 2021 is all of a sudden upon us and we find ourselves preparing for another Wet Season here in the Northern Territory. On behalf of the Emergency Services Team, a massive thank you to everyone for their time, support, encouragement and commitment this year we are very proud of everything we have achieved as a team. 2020 has been a year like no other. In Emergency Services we are used to supporting others who have been affected by an emergency, while usually being safe ours...elves. This year however, we were helping others while also being in the middle of a global pandemic. This meant new ways of working and we are extremely proud of our ES volunteers for taking on the challenge and supporting people across the country who were affected by an emergency. Some main events in 2020: Supported the Black Summer Bushfires. Six volunteers and staff supported Victoria and South Australia during the bushfires down south earlier this year. They undertook roles in the Incident Management Team as Incident Commanders, Logistics and Operations Officers. Made 7326 phone calls to over 1200 people in quarantine and self-isolation as part of our TeleOutreach program. For four months, our volunteers gave psychosocial support, information and a listening ear to anyone who was in quarantine in either a hotel or at home. Recruited more than 90 volunteers across the Northern Territory. Welcome to all our new team members! Were on standby for a tropical low, Tropical Cyclone Esther and NT bushfires prepared to respond if needed. Had 3 student placements from Charles Darwin University join our teams in Darwin and Katherine. Thanks to Jake, Ashutosh and Anup for all your hard work. Helped people across the Territory get better prepared for emergencies through community visits, Pillowcase Program workshops and RediPlan and cyclone preparedness sessions. This provides only a snapshot of the amazing work that has been accomplished this year and the whole team sincerely thank you for all of your hard work throughout 2020. We wish you all a safe and fun-filled New Year’s Eve and look forward to working with you all in 2021. Let’s hope it’s a good one! The ES team
08.01.2022 We are currently getting a lot of rain across the Territory and a Flood Watch has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for the Central Inland parts of the NT. This means you need to be extra careful when getting into a car and heading out on the road. Watch the video below from the Big Weather show on why you should never drive in flood waters. ... You can still watch the whole series on ABC TV +iview.
06.01.2022 Below is a very good article about the importance of Psychological First Aid (PFA), especially during this global pandemic. Psychological First Aid is the core of what Red Cross Emergency Services do and all of our volunteers are trained in how to provide PFA to people who have been impacted by an emergency. If you are interested in supporting people before, during and after an emergency, sign up to become a Red Cross Emergency Services volunteer today via: https://volunteer...ing.redcross.org.au//emergency-services-v https://www.washingtonpost.com//7c68d746-fc23-11ea-9ceb-06
06.01.2022 Preparing for the wet season with our regions. Last week the ES team in Darwin travelled to Katherine for a catch-up with our colleagues and volunteers down there. As a big wet season is expected, it is more important than ever that we prepare together. The visit involved regional planning, ES induction, Operational Overview, REDS training and Psychological First Aid training. And our two student placements finally got to meet!... Thank you to Nicki and her team of volunteers, and a big thank you to Northern Territory Emergency Service, Katherine for letting us use their fantastic training space and for also attending our PFA training. If you want to volunteer with Red Cross in Katherine, pop into their office and speak to Nicki. In a couple of weeks, it is Alice Springs turn to get a visit from ES. If you would like to get involved with Emergency Services in Central Australia, please contact the Alice Springs team to get on board in time for our upcoming training.
05.01.2022 A big thank you to all our volunteers and role players who participated in Exercise New Normal over the weekend! We had 60 people taking on roles in the Incident Management Team, in our Relief Centre and as community members impacted by a flood, and everyone did it with great enthusiasm. It was a great event where we hope you all had a couple of fun and interesting days, feeling better prepared to support our community in case of an emergency.... Take a look at the photos below:
03.01.2022 Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who shared our preparedness messages last week. The Preparedness Week may be over for this year, but that doesn’t mean you should stop preparing for emergencies. No, we hope this week has opened your eyes for how important emergencies preparedness is, and how easy it can be. Now is the best time to take action and become ready for whatever happens next. Downloading the free Get Prepared app is a quick and simple step you can take today. I...t’ll take you two minutes to download, and just a few more to fill in some basic preparedness information that will make your life easier if an emergency hit. You can get it done on your lunch break, on the bus on your way home from work, while you’re watching telly tonight, or while waiting for your takeaway to be ready. https://getprepared.app.link/es-nt
03.01.2022 2021 is here and it started off with the first cyclone of the year. Tropical Cyclone Imogen might not have affected the NT as bad as QLD but was a good reminder that we are in the middle of the cyclone season and we need to stay alert. Have you got your emergency kit ready? Are you stocked up on water and non-perishable food? Are you able to protect your most important things in case of an emergency?... Download our packing list on the link below to make sure you don’t forget anything. https://www.redcross.org.au//2020-07-13-Get-Packing.pdf.as
