25.01.2022 Temporary is a project from the UNSW Centre for Ideas and Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law in partnership with Guardian Australia, inspired by the book Refugee Rights and Policy Wrongs by Jane McAdam and Fiona Chong. "The people interviewed in Temporary are each at a different stage of their complex asylum process. None of them knew, as they grabbed their things, that they were bound for Australia, where there was growing panic about their arrival."

23.01.2022 IT’S BEEN 1000 DAYS IN DETENTION. GET KOPIKA AND THARUNICAA #HOMETOBILO What’s more, Peter Dutton is EVICTING hundreds of refugee families from their homes - so...me with newborn babies - and withholding all financial support. If we don’t act now, hundreds of FAMILIES WILL BE OUT ON THE STREET. All we want is to see these innocent children happy, healthy and safe, but grassroots organisations are already overwhelmed by the pandemic - WE CAN’T DO THIS ALONE. Please SIGN and SHARE this petition and help us #ProtectRefugeeKids! https://www.change.org/p/protectrefugeekids-from-dutton-s-b

22.01.2022 Item in today's newsletter from Bayside Refugee Advocacy and Support Association (BRASA) LETTER TO M.P. DEMANDING EXPLANATION OF HEAVY-HANDED DAWN RAID TO RELOCATE 15 REFUGEES Excerpt from a letter sent to Tim Wilson, MP. by BRASA committee member. ... I have been a regular MITA visitor, however this has not been allowable since March. Recently I was deeply saddened and shocked to hear that for no apparent reason on Friday 27/11 at 5am, 15 of the men were brutally woken and told to pack as they were to go to WA, Yongah Hill. I know some of these men and the way this was done was reprehensible. 6 SERCO guards stormed into a room with the command, with another 9 waiting outside the room. There was little time to pack and belongings went to Property and some SERCO told them to throw their items in the bin e.g. electric shavers etc. Over the years these items have been generously donated (via the correct channels) by myself, and BRASA members and other kind people. Some men were handcuffed. Most were only dressed in T shirts and long pants. They had no food until their arrival at YH some 7 hours later (by chartered plane). It remains to be seen whether the items in MITA Property actually get to their rightful owners. On the plane there were 15 men and 50 SERCO guards. At YH they are in High Security. At MITA they were not. I have known several of these men over the years, and can attest they are gentle good people. I expect you to raise this issue in Parliament Tim, by way of explanation, please. 1. Why were they moved? 2. What is the plan (going forward) with them? 3. How does one account for the harshness in the delivery? The writer of this letter also asked why the men were not allowed to keep their medications with them when they were moved.

20.01.2022 It's been one month since we handed over more than 65,000 signatures calling #GameOver on Australia's cruel offshore detention regime - and that once and for al...l, The Australian Government must accept New Zealand's long standing offer of resettlement. Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton was forced to address the issue on the record. He says the New Zealand deal hasn't been ruled out. Together, we can make them rule it in. See more

10.01.2022 For seven years New Zealand has offered to take people who are currently in detention in PNG and Nauru - and for seven years the Government has refused. Enough is enough.

09.01.2022 Visiting to start again.

08.01.2022 Wednesday - 2 December 2020 Time: 7:30pm- 8:30pm AEDT Online: https://amnestyau.zoom.us/j/96348521163 Come and hear from our incredible speakers... - Farhad Rahmati (Human Rights Defender and Spokesperson for #GameOver and #TimeForAHome) - Pamela Curr (ARAN) - Alison Battisson (Human Rights 4 All) - Ry Atkinson (Amnesty International Australia). 05.01.2022 November 26, 2020 Over 30 refugees, almost half of those being held at the Mantra Hotel in Melbourne, are in their sixth day of a stay-in protest over their continued detention and worsening conditions. Since last Friday, the refugees are refusing to leave their rooms boycotting all activities, and gym facilities.... The refugees are protesting over being indefinitely detained since they were brought from PNG for medical treatment under the Medevac law. In a group complaint letter, signed by 34 refugees (see here), sent on 2 November, the refugees say, It’s almost 18 months we [have been] detained here and we have not received proper treatment we [were] mostly brought here for mental issues [but] we feel even worse since we came to Australia. Serco only responded to the complaint letter, more than three weeks later, yesterday 25 November. The stay-in protest came after news that 10 refugees and asylum seekers brought from Nauru on 4 September have been released into community detention after two months’ detention in Australia, while refugees transferred under Medevac legislation, are still in closed detention after more than 18 months. Tensions are increasing across the government’s detention regime, fuelled by the discriminatory treatment of refugees brought to Australia under the now-repealed Medevac laws. Protests continue, both inside and outside, the Mantra Hotel, Preston, every weekday at 5pm; and at 3pm on the weekend. Constant noise from renovations at the Mantra hotel are adding to the intolerable conditions. Despite attempts by Border Force to stamp out protests at the Kangaroo Point hotel, protests also continue at that hotel-prison, with rush-hour protests outside the hotel every Monday and Wednesday, starting at 4.30pm. Inside Brisbane’s detention centre, Somali refugee Saif Ali staged a protest over his continued detention, and Border Force’s refusal to allow him to visit his wife who was having surgery in Brisbane yesterday (Wed 25 November). Major Free the Refugees rallies are being held as part of the #TimeForAHome campaign on 12 December in Sydney and Melbourne and 13 December in Brisbane. 05.01.2022 Dear friends, today marks another milestone for Nades, Priya, Kopika and Tharnicaa. Today it is 1000 days since this beautiful family was snatched from their ho...me in Biloela in a dawn raid by Mr Dutton's Australian Border Force. We cannot believe that anyone could justify keeping these dedicated parents and their gorgeous little girls locked up, when they have a home, and a community that wants them back. We have sent these cute Christmas sacks to our little 'cockatoos' Kopika and Tharnicaa, in the hope of lifting their spirits as they approach their third Christmas in detention. Let's show them we haven't forgotten about them, and that we won't ever stop until they're home to Bilo - please, write a Christmas card with a message of support and address it to: Nades and Priya c/o Phosphate Hill Immigration Facility Christmas Island WA 6798 *Please send your card via express post so it arrives in time for Christmas
