02.01.2022 Hey everyone and welcome back to another member spotlight! This week, we’re going to be spotlighting Evan Mak and the LUCAS hexapod team, a group of 3rd year st...udents studying Mechatronics who have been working on a hexapod project during the semester break. ? We’ve built a 6-legged robot driven by servos and a raspberry pi 4 over the break. We found a specialized hexapod model online and adapted it to use off-the-shelf components rather than custom components. The spiderbot will be controlled by a program running on the raspberry pi. ? So far, the control systems with the raspberry pi and two servo controllers are complete, and the first version of the 3d printed frame is complete. We have a version of the movement code that should work but isn’t quite there yet that we’re trying to figure out. As our parts slowly trickle in, we’re looking to get a second set of 3d printed parts, and iron out all the errors in our movement code. What have been some of the challenges during the project and how have you been overcoming them? The hexapod is very much a whole system, so challenges came at us from many angles, from finding a reliable source of 3d printed parts at the correct quality, to choosing between different design options, to issues in the code. We’ve overcome them with flexibility (using less than ideal parts for stand-ins while we wait for deliveries), hard work (filing down the edges of failed 3d prints), discussion and compromise, and a lot of patience. ? We need to still complete the robot to a point where we can control it and it can walk around. After that milestone is complete, we plan to translate the code from python to C++ to improve our understanding of both languages, and perhaps add a computer vision subsystem to it if possible. ? This project was definitely made easier by finding like-minded people and sharing the costs, decision making burden, skills and labour. There’s five of us in the group right now and we’ve all been having a solid time together and learning heaps with this hands-on experience. Evan and the LUCAS team have definitely got an amazing project with their hexapod!
