24.01.2022 "It’s important to focus on what joys we have during this time." Teaching Fellow Denise Lofts on World Teachers' Day, the 2021 Commonwealth Bank Teaching Awards and keeping hope during a difficult year.

24.01.2022 February 11 is the International Day for Women and Girls in Science, where we celebrate equal access to and participation in science for women and girls. Hoxton Park Public School had a thriving Robotics Lab where students could take electives in coding and robot building. Despite its success, the school saw participation rates for girls were far lower than those for boys. To increase their engagement, Hoxton Park launched its Girls in STEM days project, supported by Salesf...orce and Schools Plus. Held once each term, Girls in STEM days were co-designed with the students and provided STEM education opportunities tailored specifically to the girls' interests. Activities included working with sustainable energy kits like solar-powered robots and meeting with female professionals from Salesforce to learn more about the industry. Student surveys following the project showed the girls were more confident in using STEM, more engaged in learning and expressed an eagerness to continue in their future studies. Last year alone over 15,000 students were given greater access to STEM education, thanks to support from Salesforce.

22.01.2022 Undera Primary was one of over 50 schools provided with urgent relief funding through our Crisis Appeal. With the grant, Undera purchased books and stationary to help students and teachers with remote learning. Their principal spoke of the grant: "It gave me the flexibility to have novels, resources for art, paper for the workbooks we made, and very importantly it lifted our spirits when everyone knows the mental well-being cost of this pandemic is an issue we all face from... a number of fronts. The local bus company was very helpful too. They gave me their bus and driver to go from farm to farm and drop off the materials your organisation had helped pay for. We even did it in fancy dress and asked those families who wanted wave to us from a distance to do so too. That really made the students smile!" Thank you to all of those who have donated to the Crisis Appeal so far. Your support has assisted students from many schools like Undera Primary. To donate, go to www.schoolsplus.org.au/schools-crisis-appeal/

03.01.2022 As part of NAIDOC week, we want to share one of the inspirational Indigenous language projects that are supported by Schools Plus. Mossman State School is a historically and culturally rich primary school located within the semi-rural town of Mossman, QLD. Around half of the students are Indigenous and many others come from language backgrounds other than English. In 2018, leaders at Mossman set out to close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous student outcomes by b...ringing the local Aboriginal language, Kuku Yalanji, to the school. After the establishment of the Kuku Yalanji Language Advisory Group, the signing of a historic language agreement, and funding through our Fair Education program, the project commenced for Prep to Year 4 students. Since then, the school has seen improvements in student engagement, attendance and behaviour, and Kuku Yalanji has helped to strengthen the identity and well-being of its Indigenous community. The success of the program has seen the school awarded for its excellence and the school's Head of Teaching and Learning, Sharon Case, has since become a Teaching Fellow. Mossman is now focussed on growing the language program to other Years, and have developed an app to share Kuku Yalanji with students, teachers and schools beyond the Mossman community.
