23.01.2022 News from " THE SNAKE PIT " Red Bellied Black Snake Pseudechis porphyriacus This 1 and a half metre Snake was sighted in a Schofields Back yard after an encounter with the neighbours French Bulldog which is at the vet receiving Anti Venom. The Snake exited the property into a Storm Water Catchment area. So we had to search that well overgrown site and eventually found the Large Red Bellied Black Snake. Once out of the drainage site we inspected the Snake as the Dog owners arrived and explained what had happened. The Snale also has some battle wounds but should be ok to be released after a vet check.

19.01.2022 News from " THE SNAKE PIT " Lace Monitor Varanus varius Lace Monitors grow to between 1.5 and 2 metres in length, it is a dark steel grey above with pale yellow or cream bands or rows of spots. The jaws and snout are usually strongly barred with yellow and dark grey. The toes are equipped with long, strong claws, which are used for climbing. The tongue is long and forked like a snake . Monitors are the only lizards that have a forked tongue. The lace monitor lives in eastern ...Australian forests and coastal tablelands. Much of its time is spent up fairly large trees, although they usually come down to the ground to forage for food. When disturbed it sprints to the nearest tree and climbs to safety with great speed and agility. The lace monitor has a broad and varied diet including birds, insects, bird eggs, reptiles and small mammals. They will readily feed on carrion, including road kills, gorging themselves when the opportunity arises. After a large feed they are able to go for many weeks without feeding again. Lace monitors lay between 6 to 12 eggs each year. These are usually laid in termite mounds, particularly those found in trees. The female excavates a hole on the side of the termite mound, lays the eggs and then leaves the termites to reseal the eggs inside the nest. It is believed that the mother is aware of when the eggs are due to hatch and she will return to the nest and opens it up with her strong claws to allow the baby monitors to escape. See more

The underside is creamy-white, although males may have a vivid red on some or most of the belly and chest. There are enlarged scales forming a crest down the middle of th...e head, back and tail. The legs are relatively long and powerful and the strong tail is flattened on the sides to assist with swimming. The eastern water dragon inhabits the coastal water courses of eastern Australia from northern Queensland to Gippsland in eastern Victoria. It is a good tree climber and likes to laze on branches overhanging the water. If disturbed it will drop into the water and swim to the bottom to wait for the danger to pass, staying under for up to 30 minutes if necessary. The diet mainly comprises small reptiles, worms, frogs, insects, vegetation, fruit, small mammals and molluscs Males defend a territory and a harem of females, carrying out an impressive series of head bobs and arm waves to discourage other intruding males. The females lay around a dozen eggs in an excavated hole in sandy soil above the floodline. These will hatch in approximately three months. The young are miniature replicas of the adults and are able to fend for themselves as soon as they hatch. See more

Individuals are marked with alternating black and white or yellowish bands, Though it was once thought that there was only one species, the discovery of another species (Vermicella parscauda) on a peninsul...a in Australia's far north indicates there may be more species of bandy-bandy than previously thought. The eyes are small. The tail is short and blunt. The average total length (including tail) is 50 to 60 cms. Vermicella annulata is weakly venomous with localized symptoms around the bite area.
