24.01.2022 More ASA advocacy results

24.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE - ASA Welcomes Victorian Moves to Protect Healthcare Workers The Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA) has welcomed news of the efforts now being made by the Victorian Government to address issues around COVID-19 infections of healthcare workers in the workplaces. The ASA has been a vocal advocate for anaesthetists and other frontline healthcare workers as infection rates have grown at an alarming rate in recent weeks and months. ... We wrote to the Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews, calling for further action around health and safety and have for many months been calling for fit-testing of PPE, said ASA President Dr Suzi Nou. Today’s release of detailed analysis of COVID infection in Victorian healthcare workers revealed some 70 to 80% of infections were contracted in workplaces. We are delighted to see the ASA advocacy result in moves to introduce PPE spotters, fit-testing trials and to fast track work cover claims. We will still be campaigning for automatic lodgement of workcover claims for health workers and to remove the onus that COVID-19 has been acquired in the workplace. The ASA would also like to see support for the implementation of reusable respiratory protection and strengthening of occupational health and safety systems in health centres and anywhere health workers are getting infected. I have been proud to represent anaesthetists on the Victorian Healthcare Worker Infection Prevention and Wellbeing Taskforce and to work closely with other specialties to advocate for our healthcare workers on the frontline. We look forward to seeing other states around Australia follow this lead, Dr Nou said.

21.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE - ASA Welcomes Aerosol Acknowledgement for COVID Transmission The Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA) has welcomed the acknowledgement of aerosol transmission of COVID-19 by the Victorian Healthcare Worker Infection Prevention and Wellbeing Taskforce ASA President Dr Suzi Nou said the Society has been advocating for this acknowledgement to help improve the safety measures required to protect healthcare workers including anaesthetists on the frontline of... this pandemic. The Mode of Transmission Statement issued by the Taskforce outlines how SARS-CoV-2 can also be transmitted via aerosols in specific circumstances and that it is well recognised during aerosol generating procedures in a healthcare setting, said Dr Nou. This is a great step to acknowledge the potential for aerosol spread and for more stringent safety measures to be taken including the requirement of particulate filter respirators such as P2/N95s in all care interactions for patients with COVID-19. We still are keen to see input from the occupational health and safety experts on higher order controls such as ventilation. Strengthening PPE requirements and other occupational health and safety systems will go a long way to control the spread of COVID in healthcare settings and in the community. The Mode of Transmission Statement is included in the October 23 update here: https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/victorian-healthcare-worker-cov

13.01.2022 Good news from Victoria

13.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE - Anaesthetists Welcome Progress in PPE Fit-Testing Campaign The Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA) has welcomed news that Queensland Health will introduce a respiratory protection program that will include fit-testing of P2/N95 masks and urges other states and territories to follow this lead. The ASA has been calling for fit-testing to be mandated for healthcare workers since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and has released a series of posters with i...nformation for health staff if their employers refuse to provide fit-testing. ASA President Dr Suzi Nou said this is just the latest step in the society’s campaign to improve health and safety issues for frontline workers. We have been vocal in our fight to protect healthcare workers with a strong focus on fit-testing especially for anaesthetists involved in high-risk procedures such as intubation, Dr Nou said. The progress happening in Queensland and the trial announced in Victoria last week show we are heading in the right direction. We just need to move there faster if we want to protect the lives of our healthcare workers, patients and the community. The ASA has released a Position Statement on Fit-Testing for Adequate Respiratory Protection endorsed by the Australian Institute of Health & Safety (AIHS) and Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) which recommends: All health services be mandated to provide health workers in contact with patients with COVID-19 with adequate respiratory protection. This includes a fit tested N95/P2 respirator as a minimum and is in accordance with the National Guidelines and Australian Standards, except where State guidance recommends a higher level of PPE. Health workers should not undertake or be required to undertake tasks requiring PPE in situations where appropriately fit-tested and checked PPE is not available for use. Any such tasks should not proceed until required PPE is made available. In ensuring adequate PPE, fit-testing is essential to ensure P2/N95 respirators will provide adequate protection. Training as to their correct use should be provided and fit-checking must be performed with each individual mask application. Where fit-testing is not available, alternatives methods of protection are to be implemented (e.g. PAPRs). All anaesthetists must undertake training until they are proficient in the donning and doffing of PPE and team-based simulation for protected intubation and extubation as a minimum.
