Pete is a Master Level 3 PCAS Coach and was awarded the 2017 AS...CA Bruce Walsh Memorial Award ‘for services to the ASCA and the profession of S&C’. We tend to use a lot of strategy metrics rather than outcome metrics, like jump height, from force plates in the rehabilitation process Once an athlete has developed the brakes, we can start to work on the acceleration The sooner you come back to sport the higher the risk of injury, whether it is ipsilateral or contralateral Getting to know people and continuously talking to them about problems they are having and barriers to performance is a large part of my role as the network lead for S&C Listen FOR FREE on the ASCA website: http://ow.ly/SWuh30rtdFX

19.01.2022 2020 ASCA International Conference Lecture Presenter Highlight! Chris Gaviglio PhD | Queensland Academy of Sport "From rehab to performance enhancement - how to incorporate Blood Flow Restriction into your training and competition environment"... Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training has recently had a lot of publicity as a training tool to assist with accelerating gains in strength and hypertrophy whilst only using low loads. Consequently, this is seen as a great tool in the injury rehabilitation setting. However, there are many other very interesting uses for BFR in both a training and competition setting. Therefore, this presentation will highlight how to use BFR across a spectrum of uses as a method to improve recovery, physiology and elite strength & performance. It will bring together the vast array of current research along with current applied practices that are being employed with athletes. Chris brings over 10 years of BFR experience to this presentation and will leave you with an understanding of what BFR can do for your athletes and how it can improve their training and competition response. 19.01.2022 2020 ASCA International Conference Lecture Presenter Highlight! David Watts | Melbourne Football Club "Preparing Athletes for the Sport of Fitness"... With just over 10 years of formalised competition, CrossFit is an extremely young and somewhat misunderstood sport. As the sport has evolved over the last decade, weve been able to gain a better understanding of the typical demands of competition. With this knowledge in hand, coaches are now better able to prepare athletes for competitive success. This presentation aims to provide the strength and conditioning community with a detailed examination of the sport. Specifically, this would include a review of how elite competition is structured, the physical qualities required for competitive success, the demands of the sport and how to prepare athletes for competition. 18.01.2022 2020 ASCA International Conference Tactical Presenter Highlight! Benjamin Meadley | Monash University / Ambulance Victoria "Assessing the physiological demands of helicopter search and rescue operations"... Physical employment standards (PES) are devised to ensure physiological capacities correspond with the specific tasks of a role. Scientifically validated PES can provide benefits to staff, organisations and their stakeholders. This is especially relevant in specialist medical roles where patient access, clinical interventions and extraction may be time critical. Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) staff undertake similar roles, yet the initial and ongoing PES set by individual organisations vary, and aviation regulatory bodies do not currently mandate PES for staff undertaking helicopter-based search and rescue. In services that have established PES, few demonstrate an evidenced based, scientifically validated approach. This poses the question of whether or not the current standards appropriately identify or eliminate those applying for a position in HEMS teams. This presentation details scientific and logistical challenges our research team encountered and overcame during a project to quantify the physiological requirements of helicopter-based water and land winch rescue. 18.01.2022 2020 ASCA International Conference Lecture Presenters Highlight! Stephen Bird PhD & Glenn Corcoran | University of Southern Queensland / Bond University High Performance Centre "On-field conditioning for large groups: The forgotten aspect in strength and conditioning"... In football codes it is common for strength and conditioning (S&C) coaches to be confronted with extremely large player numbers (more than 100) to complete field conditioning. It is then that the S&C coach begins to realise that conditioning is sometimes the forgotten aspect in program design and the critical role that planning plays in achieving sequential flow from drill to drill. Glenn and Stephen will outline key planning and conceptual approaches to running on-field conditioning sessions for large groups. Most importantly, running field conditioning for large groups is not simply about planning and conceptual approaches but about execution, applying and implementing these concepts to achieve successful session outcomes. 17.01.2022 2020 ASCA International Conference Keynote Presenter Highlight! Phil Coles | Boston Celtics "Transitioning between greatness"... Transitioning between greatness details Phils thoughts on how to successfully transition your skills between different sports at the elite level. It is easy for strength coaches / performance staff to get pigeon holed into being specialists in one sport or domain, but the reality is that your skills are universal and given the limited opportunity in professional sport, particularly in this post-COVID world, you should be willing and able to transition between sports. The ability the complete that transition involves having clearly identifiable core values, a process driven approach and a willingness to trust others within your team. Phil will talk through his value-based approach to high performance management, and how he has tried to achieve success through multiple transitions. Register by 30 September and save $50! 12.01.2022 Exercise Highlight "Animal Crawls" shared by the 2020 International Conference YHOP Presenter Riley McGown. Why do you prescribe this exercise Too often in sport, we become experts in movements and shapes that look like our sport, and neglect those that dont. Incorporating movements that get us back to our primitive selves and into positions weve lost since being children can be very beneficial. Im a firm believer in building robustness, which means being able to find ...strength and stability in these positions we have lost. Talking weight room economics, animal crawls have a great return on investment: Exposing the body to positions it isnt often in, for example deep triple flexion in a gorilla crawl. Whole body stability whilst holding positions - some unusual, some common. Challenge joints through motion under load, for example the shoulder complex during bear crawl. Ankle/foot strength and stability if done barefoot. Body awareness, particularly for young and/or long athletes. They are fun, and easy to introduce and remember using animal analogies. 11.01.2022 Exercise Highlight"Single Leg Medicine Ball Slams" shared by the 2020 International Conference Presenter Nicolai Morris. Why do you prescribe this exercise The SL GHR MB Slams is aimed at improving both the trunk and posterior chain stiffness and isometric strength.... The perturbations from the MB improve hamstring strength and elastic loafing under isometric conditions, whilst encouraging trunk stiffness and control. This is a great exercise to use with track and field athletes. Hamstrings should be trained at different positions, lengths, velocities and intensities to be resilient. Check out the video and coaching tips on the ASCA website: http://ow.ly/PWn730r8Fxl

11.01.2022 2020 ASCA International Conference Keynote Presenter Highlight! Paul Comfort PhD | University of Salford "Assessing Force Production Characteristics for Applied Practice and Research"... The assessment of force production characteristics is becoming increasingly more common in research and applied practice, due to the availability of affordable and portable force plate systems. The isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP) is probably the most common method of assessing maximal isometric force production and has been used in practice and research for over 2 decades. Unfortunately, there are clear inconsistencies within the methods reported within the published literature, including posture, sampling frequency, instructions to athletes and analysis of the force-time data. Such inconsistencies can result in limited opportunity for fair or appropriate comparisons of data between studies, athletes and time-points. In addition, numerous erroneous methods compounding these issues can be found online via social media and even via on manufacturers websites. It is important, therefore, that such procedures should be standardized based on the evidence presented in methodological studies. Register by 30 September and save $50! 03.01.2022 2020 ASCA International Conference YHOP Presenter Highlight! Hannah Dower | Western Bulldogs "Beyond Bendy: Understanding and working with the hypermobile athlete"... This presentation will focus on the assessment, management and understanding of athletes, Hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD)and the groups of conditions related to joint hypermobility (JH). It is estimated that 4-15% of the population are thought to suffer from the genetically inherited condition and large amounts of athletes have been shown to be participating at a variety of sports and levels. Hypermobility is not rare, it is just poorly understood, overlooked, disregarded and discounted. Studies suggest that hypermobile athletes have a higher prevalence of injury, pain and dysfunction with impaired joint proprioception, control and flawed muscular activation patterns. 03.01.2022 2020 ASCA International Conference Keynote Presenter Highlight! Brett Bartholomew | Art of Coaching "Creating the Optimal Coaching Environment: Addressing Athlete Learning Styles, Skill-Acquisition & Transfer"... Should male and female athletes be coached the same way? Are learning styles a farce? What are some key neural and social related differences as to why adolescent athletes may perceive you as a coach, or your instructional practices in an unfavourable manner? A growing number of coaches want to develop athletes who can make decisions and adapt to changing situations in their respective competitive arena. Discovering the answers to these questions are the bedrock in helping them do so. "Conscious Coaches" understand that learning is less the reception of acts and facts, and more a social practice that implies the involvement of the whole person in relation to both their sport and social identity. Every athlete should not be coached in the same manner, and above all else, our teaching practices must be adaptable. If the desire is to maximize learning and performance outcomes, a coach must have a firm understanding of how one learns, how one teaches, what is being taught and the context in which it is being taught. This talk explores many of the taken-for-granted practices in coaching and highlights how they can be improved. Register by 30 September and save $50!
