25.01.2022 Hey team! Great news for Queensland based student Veterans hoping to transition into study. Here's the QTAC Armed Forces Schedule that ALL Queensland Universities now accept, translating military service into an ATAR equivalent for university entrance. The ASVA team is working with different state Tertiary Admission Centres (TAC's), respective state governments and opposition parties to encourage the adoption of this schedule throughout Australia for the benefit of all curr...ent and former service members. If you know someone that this could help, please tag them! If you live outside of QLD and could benefit, or know someone this would benefit, from this expanding interstate, please comment, tag & let us know! The more feedback we get, the more power we have when talking to governments and institutions. Additionally ASVA is extending funding to cover the QTAC application cost for the first 20 prospective student Veterans who contact us about beginning their study journey and have applied through QTAC. If you have any questions please reach out to us at [email protected] regarding this or other opportunities you wish to explore. Cheers!

22.01.2022 Hey team - An update on ASVA’s 2020 Technology Grants for Victorian Student Veterans, made possible by the Victorian Veterans Council - VVC This months recipient is James. James served in the Australian Army, within the Royal Australian Corps of Signals, for 5 years where he reached the rank of Corporal and deployed to Afghanistan twice. Following his separation from Defence Australia, James used his ADF training and experience and applied it to his tertiary education, gradua...ting from Deakin University with an Undergraduate degree in Psychological Science in early 2020. Unsurprisingly, James excelled within his undergraduate studies and is now completing his thesis studies within the Psychological Science Honours program. Throughout 2020 James has been a member of a research team that is investigating ways in which veterans can experience positive growth following adversity. Following the completion of his honours year in 2021, James hopes to enrol in a Master of Clinical Psychology with the long-term goal of working with the veteran & first responders communities within the field of grief, loss, & trauma. Upon receiving his ASVA 2020 Technology Grant (which you can see below) James said This grant will greatly assist in my ability to work collaboratively with my research team and allow me to work on the go. I can't thank you guys enough for this, it has really made a big difference to our finances and taken away a fairly stressful problem we had. At ASVA we are proud to assist our Student Veteran community to achieve their educational and employment goals. We are particularly pleased to be able to help James as he continues his service within the field of psychology to support our Veteran and first responder communities with their post service lives. Congratulations James. 09.01.2022 Hey team, An update on ASVA’s 2020 Technology Grants for Victorian Student Veterans, made possible by the support of the Victorian Veterans Council - VVC. This month’s recipient was Chris, a former RAEME Craftsman, who served in the ARA for seven years. Below is a photo of his brand new Macbook Pro and noise cancelling headphones tools which will support his success throughout his ongoing Higher Education journey.... Chris is undertaking a Graduate Diploma at RMIT University and, with the transition to online learning, a little extra technology support was needed to ensure he could undertake all of his learning requirements. As Chris suffered significant hearing loss during his service, he also required appropriate over-ear headphones to ensure he’s not missing any information in his online lectures and tutorials. With this new technology, a significant barrier to Chris being able to learn effectively has been removed, and after he completes his studies, he hopes to pursue a meaningful career within the Defence Industry. Our next recipient will be announced soon so make sure to keep an eye out for our next profile. If you would like to apply for an ASVA technology grant in the future please contact us at [email protected] with the following information: A brief background of your service, What you are currently studying, What you plan to achieve upon completion of your studies, and An outline of how this grant will help you achieve your desired academic outcomes. If you are struggling with your studies due to the Covid-19 restrictions, please contact us and we will endeavour to work with your educational institution to provide support during this unprecedented time. Cheers, ASVA

05.01.2022 Hey team - An update on ASVA’s 2020 Technology Grants for Victorian Student Veterans! This month’s recipient is a former grunt, Dom, who served in the Royal Australian Infantry for 5 years where he deployed to Afghanistan and supported domestic disaster relief efforts. After travelling the world upon discharge, Dom was inspired to use his Australian Army service as a platform to better himself, others, and the world around him. With ASVA's entry support, Dom is now studying a... dual Bachelor of Business & Bachelor of Biotechnology - with the intent of becoming a Climate Scientist upon graduation. Dom has completed his first semester of studies, predominantly online given the Covid-19 issues, and managed to achieve Distinctions and High Distinctions in all his subjects, despite only having an old Ipad (with a cracked screen) and his housemate's computers to use. What a jet! Below is a photo of Dom’s new Microsoft Surface i7 laptop and his old slouchy for good measure. 04.01.2022 ATTN: Call for participants for a research study into Moral Injury. Our friends at The University of Melbourne's Phoenix Australia Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health have requested support to raise awareness and survey participation in their important research. Most of what we know about moral injury (which refers to the psychological, emotional and spiritual distress which may be felt after being exposed to an event which challenges one’s sense of what’s right) is bas...ed on the combat experiences of the U.S. Armed Forces, particularly those who have been recently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. This study, being conducted by Anne Macdonald who is both a practising clinical psychologist and PhD Candidate at the Phoenix Australia - Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health, University of Melbourne, aims to examine the range of responses to morally injurious experiences, including those that occur in-garrison, within the context of the ADF. A more comprehensive understanding of the Australian experience will assist in the development of better targeted treatment and rehabilitation programs." If you are interested in contributing to this study, please go to the study link: https://www.phoenixaustralia.org/mis. This link will assess your eligibility for participation, and provide detailed information about the study and what is involved. If you are eligible to and consent to participate, you will then be directed to the survey. The survey is completely anonymous and will take about 40 minutes of your time. No identifying information or details of events is required. Participation is restricted to ex-serving members who are no longer active reservists and who have experienced a morally challenging event during their military service. Cheers, ASVA

02.01.2022 Student Veteran Profile: Ben, Bachelor of Media and Communications, Deakin University Ben grew up on the Gold Coast and left high school in Year 11 to join the Australian Defence Force at the earliest opportunity. In 2011, at age 17, Ben enlisted in the Australian Army joining the RACT - Royal Australian Corps of Transport as an Air Dispatcher. After completing Air Dispatch and Driver IET’s, Ben served in 176 Air Dispatch SQN, as well as Air Movements Training and Development... Unit (AMTDU). In service, Ben completed a 12-month Strategic Engagement Indonesian Language Course at the Defence Force School of Languages (DFSL) and subsequently worked on multiple international exercises providing specialist logistics and language support alongside the Indonesian, US, South Korean, Japanese, and New Zealand militaries. Through this, Ben developed a keen interest in language and began writing articles which were published in the Australian Army Transport Journal. Ben separated from the ADF in late 2016 in order to develop his writing and language skills, and to develop a professional civilian career. However, upon discharge, he faced significant challenges gaining entrance into university having not completing High School. Furthermore, he was unable to find a university which would recognise his ADF language qualifications or military training and experience. After engaging with the Australian Student Veterans Association (ASVA), Ben was accepted into a Bachelor of Media and Communications at Deakin University, Melbourne Burwood Campus and was even awarded Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), meaning his overall course duration was reduced and his graduation timeline was accelerated. Through ASVA’s networks, Ben will soon commence an accredited internship and Workplace Integrated learning Program (WILP) with a brilliant Veteran owned business, helping him to gain vital professional experience, whilst gaining further academic credit towards his degree. Ben also received financial support via the ASVA & Melbourne Legacy Education and Training Grant, for Victorian-based Student Veterans, to help overcome the financial burdens of study. Ben is passionate about supporting our veteran community and is now working on a project which combines photography and interviews with Veterans to highlight the stories of transition within the community, seeking to broadly increase understanding, highlight strengths, and reduce stigma regarding veterans within the broader community. Thank you Ben for allowing us to share your story and image!
