Unsurprisingly, reality is opposite of what those two claimed - renewable energy is lower cost and more competitors supplying us power actually brings prices down: Figures released by the State Government show the amount charged by SA power stations, a major ingredient in the bills of homes and businesses, is now lower than in both Victoria and NSW. SAs average electricity wholesale power price fell from $109 per megawatt hour in 2017 to $62 per MWh in 2020. It is predicted to average $53 per MWh over the next four years. In recent months, major retailers Origin and AGL have announced they will pass on savings, with respective reductions in average household charges of $127 and $85 each. SA Energy and Mining Minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan said consumers could be hopeful of more bill savings to come. He said cheaper power would also drive new investment in key industries, creating more SA jobs.
