24.01.2022 Thanks to Andy, I now have a G.L. Patterson, Slazenger UK signature model. Gerald was an outstanding Australian tennis player winning Wimbledon in 1919 and 19...22, the Australian in 1927, Australian doubles 1914, 1922, 1925, 1926, 1927, US Doubles 1919, US singles semis 1922, 1924 and a Davis Cup player and future captain. He was mentored by Norman Brookes and possessed a very powerful serve. He introduced Dayton racquets into Australia in 1923 and became the MD of USA Spalding in their newly opened Sunshine factory here in Melbourne in 1925. This racquet would be prior to the Spalding appointment so 1920-1924 era. He was inducted into the Sport Australia Home of Fame in December 1986. This was followed by induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame in August 1997. I have only ever seen another one in 12 years so while they shouldn't be that rare thus far it had eluded me. See more

21.01.2022 The 1950 Wimbledon Doubles final was an all Australian affair. The victors were the ageing, highly skilled Bromwich and Quist over Geoff Brown and Bill Sidwell. Bill made the doubles final twice, both losses.....a great era The score 57, 63, 36, 63, 26

21.01.2022 The John Bromwich double hander developed from the mid 1930's. Has the shot changed much? These days a lot more coming over the ball.

How amazing to find this so late in my own research career and is even referenced from the 1919 American Lawn Tennis magazine. So enjoy......this sensational oddity

17.01.2022 Trolling online Australian magazines today searching for gold and some wonderful John Bromwich pics came up. The large colour scan is hi res as well. I cannot honestly recall seeing the 1940 Slazenger model he is holding but I presume it would be the Challenge 5 star model.

13.01.2022 My arm breaking Yonex alumina models in 1974 to 1976 ..found a pearler gold one today. Mmmmmmm which way do the OPS stickers face?

12.01.2022 Fabulous late 1930's reinforced throat design in this SLAZENGER ALL ENGLAND model. Listing our all the innovations from the Australian industry in the 1930's it... was a really impressive era. * models with all over spray paint decals and bindings 9 as per below, largely an Australian trend. * 1932/33 launch of the flat tops along with oval * Slazenger Floating Power model with inserted mercury filled tube to impact on weight transfer on impact with the ball * Empire Dunlop Key wound internal balance adjustment system * Spalding slotted shaft invented by an Australian * This reinforced shoulder design * Advanced wood work including contoured shafts etc...

12.01.2022 1938 despite winning a near grand slam in 1933 plus numerous doubles titles Jack ends up working in a retail store.......His wife Marjorie was a great player as well.

10.01.2022 Post war, Australian Tennis was relying on Stalwarts Bromwich and Quist or 1946 Champion Dinny Pails to form a team. Contenders included Colin Long, Geoff Brow...n, Frank Sedgman and Bill Sidwell. The LTAA were controlled by 71 year old Norman Brookes and a host of aged State administrators as well. Politics was a huge factor. Would a Davis Cup team comprise NSW and Victorian players etc.....????. In 1947, the team went off to Wimbledon and Sidwell was without a partner. He grabbed Tony Mottram, a UK number one but well below standard and promptly took him through to the doubles final beating fellow Aussie Davis Cup players along the way....But Bill wasn't in the announced team to continue to play America. More drama in the press.... Anyway, these articles show how turbulent the times were. It spans 1947 1948 and 1949.....it will jump a little but makes fascinating reading. Back then the LTAA selected teams it would support and other players sought funding from employees or state associations. To complicate matters they weren't going to send a ladies team in 1947 then did, Bromwich hated flying so some went by air while he went by ship.....

08.01.2022 A new page has been created devoted to catalogues in case you are hunting down history. This page is searchable by brand.

08.01.2022 1945 1946 Australian Davis Cup team......

03.01.2022 1927 the opening of the LTAV Kooyong stadium. It has now been returned from the much larger stadium to this original height.

03.01.2022 Well today marks the 50th anniversary of Margaret actually winning the US title, the 4th event in the GRAND SLAM of 1970. Congratulations to Margaret on a massi...ve career noting that she is still the most prolific winner in Women's tennis but I just can't imagine how an umbrella, candlesticks and silver boxes equate to what would have been a $16 million year. Money isn't everything......mmmmm Also worth noting how well the mum's are still competing and making come backs....

03.01.2022 In this Prince catalogue we see a very rare picture of Pat using what looks like a Woodie model. With a longer shaft between handle and throat it is more likely to be a version of the W-90 model which he tried before deciding on the Prince Pro Magnesium.

02.01.2022 A great story in American Lawn Tennis covering the 1926 Australian Tennis Championships. Jack B Hawkes a lefty from Geelong scored the triple wins, Daphne Akhurst wins the singles and a new young Jack wins the junior event (Crawford).
