21.01.2022 On this day 75 years ago this young man here was celebrating the end of his time serving in WWII, alongside his father. It’s also today that we thank all the men and women in our families for their service, including those who continue to serve today. The Veteran and I want to say thank you to all the WWII Vets, past and present for their service and sacrifice, and for those families whose arms they came home to be held in.

20.01.2022 Today is World Mental Health Day - yet 2020 has challenged us all in some way prior to this moment in time. Take a moment though to think about self-care and care for those around you. #caremore #DefenceFamilies

19.01.2022 Rachel, an Airforce veteran and a dear friend shared with us her thoughts on Equine Therapy & what she got out of it. Powerful stuff. "I have been lucky enough to participate in three different styles of Equine Therapy and each has helped me in its own way. The horses mirror my emotions and have taught me how to control my breathing, how to be in the moment and how to concentrate on the now. They have taught me how to trust myself and others, how being vulnerable is ok and ...by learning how they respond to different stressors, it has helped me understand why I react the way I do to my triggers. This understanding has allowed me to work out ways to manage these triggers and has also given me the tools to explain them more simply to others." Read more about Rachel's story in our Blogs section on the website link; https://australianveteransnetwork.com.au/blogs/2/ See more

18.01.2022 Sport is such an important part of life for many of us; young, old, individually and as part of a team. But due to its active nature and the physical requirements of a Defence related job, to the veteran community keeping active can be vital. Veteran Sport Australia works to develop a strong and connected system of sporting programs and opportunities for veterans and their families. Check out their page to see if they have activities close to you or to speak to them directly.

16.01.2022 For those in Darwin...this may be of interest

16.01.2022 A good DVA advocate or advisor is so hard to find. They not only make it their business to know the system and work out how to navigate it for Veterans, but they at times become a confidant. Who do you recommend and why? Feel free to tag groups, pages or people. Remember word of mouth could help one of your mates!

16.01.2022 The NSW Government, through the Office for Veterans Affairs (OVA), is developing the first whole-of-government Veterans’ Strategy. The strategy is focussed on improving access to existing NSW Government services and identifying new opportunities to support veterans and their families. To help shape the strategy’s design and delivery, OVA is seeking feedback from the community on four focus areas: health and wellbeing, employment, education and recognition. The veterans strategy survey is anonymous and available online until Friday 17 July. Current and ex-serving ADF members, their friends and families, employers, ESO’s and service providers are encouraged to share their views at www.veterans.nsw.gov.au/survey.

It’s a private and positive group of people providing support and connections to each other, to ensure our Veterans are well looked after.

12.01.2022 What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. There are lots of great resources out there to help you start or continue in the practice of mindfulness. Here is just ONE

09.01.2022 The Veteran Community Business Chamber (VCBC) is a member based group that support entrepreneurship and small businesses in the military community. This a group that we share similar values, in that they are committing to Veterans, transitioning service members and their families and so are we. 08.01.2022 Assistance dogs can be a great way for both Veterans and their families to be able to break barriers in approaching some everyday situations with PTSD. These amazing dogs can be trained to recognise cues around veterans including; contact (think mindfulness and touching), positioning (think making crowded areas less full-on) and nightmare interruption (think doggy touch and kisses or a light turned on). There are programs via DVA and various other organisations that you can look into if you think this might be for you or your Veteran.

08.01.2022 As we draw a close to this week - it would be remiss of the Veteran and I to not mention that it is National Carers Week. Whether you care for someone or you know someone who cares for another - did you realise that there are over 2.65 million carers in Australia?

02.01.2022 Today is R U OK? day and if today isn't the day to ask maybe yesterday was or tomorrow is. It's not hard to ask someone who you think or know might be struggling if they are ok, and to take some time to have a chat. Remember it only takes one person to ask...
