23.01.2022 Queensland researchers have discovered that a previously unrecognised bacterium is responsible for the signs of lung disease found in pig carcases, rather than a similar, internationally recognised infection that the animals had been vaccinated against. Having solved the disease mystery, the research team at the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) is now working to develop on-farm tests and treatments for the new infection. http://theaustralianveterinarian.com//costly-pig-lung-dis/

21.01.2022 Koalas are one of the world’s most charismatic animals. But there is a lot we still don’t know about them. For example, how do the marsupials access water in the treetops? Do they only absorb moisture from the gum leaves they eat? Or do they come down from the trees to drink from a waterhole? Until now, no one really knew. http://theaustralianveterinarian.com//tree-trunks-take-a-/
19.01.2022 Puppy Dental Malocclusion: Deciduous Mandibular Canine and Incisor Teeth Extraction and Permanent Canine Teeth Crown Extensions BY DR DAVID E CLARKE REGISTERED SPECIALIST, VETERINARY DENTISTRY AND ORAL SURGERY Oral pathology and the dentition of young animals is often overlooked and under treated. This is often because, during the period deciduous teeth are present, a puppy is examined only twice for vaccinations. It is also common for the veterinary practice to find it difficult to thoroughly examine the oral cavity, especially as a puppy may wriggle, bite or resent having its mouth opened. http://theaustralianveterinarian.com//puppy-dental-malocc/

18.01.2022 Animals can be a strong emotional support in difficult times, and it might feel like with all the spare time during the Corona lockdown, now is the perfect time to foster or adopt an animal. However, this needs to be a carefully considered undertaking. Whilst a wonderful thing to do, adoption is a long-term commitment, and fostering should not be taken lightly. http://theaustralianveterinarian.com//pets-and-the-corona/

16.01.2022 Animal behaviour scientists from the University of Lincoln, UK, have discovered that filling homeS with appeasing pheromones could be the key to a happy household where both dogs and cats are living under the same roof. The new research, led by Professor Daniel Mills and Dr Miriam Prior, explored the effects of two different pheromone products on cat-dog interactions in homes where owners could see room for improvement in their pets’ relationships. http://theaustralianveterinarian.com//key-to-harmonious-p/
16.01.2022 Veterinary surgeons with any experience in dealing with infectious disease and population medicine will be looking at the government’s current management of the Covid-19 epidemic with dismay. The current approach is to manage the epidemic to fit the critical care capacity of the NHS - something that has been under-resourced over many years. It is a strategy not so much to save lives but to delay deaths. http://theaustralianveterinarian.com//vets-would-not-mana/
15.01.2022 If you know anyone who needs a bag of free dog or cat food to get through the week our next COVID relief pet food distribution event is on this coming Saturday ...25th from 9am-12pm @ SCAR Animal Shelter, 23 Grasslands Ave, Craigieburn, VIC. To ensure our community is well supported and to assist in keeping pets in homes instead of in pounds it really will ‘take a village’ to create the changes we need to see in animal welfare. But we are positive that if we work together to help those less fortunate we will achieve bigger and better outcomes for our community pets and those who care for them Thanks to the Australian Dog Lover for sharing this article about our pet food drive: https://www.australiandoglover.com//free-drive-through-pet

12.01.2022 In a study published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine, scientists in the U.S. and Japan report that in the laboratory, cats can readily become infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and may be able to pass the virus to other cats. Professor of Pathobiological Sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine Yoshihiro Kawaoka led the study, in which researchers administered to three cats SARS-CoV-2 isolated from a human patient. http://theaustralianveterinarian.com//study-confirms-cats/

03.01.2022 PPGA provides free webinars for our professional members. If you are working in the pet industry consider joining! COVID-19 has brought with it not just a health crisis but also a social, economic, and mental health crisis as well. For Australians, already coping with the 2019/2020 bushfires, these truly are unprecedented and challenging times. Some of you, who may have been feeling the effects of burnout well before COVID-19 may be feeling overwhelmed by these additional cha...llenges. There may be others who have found the decrease in face to face business activities, that came with social distancing measures, a welcome relief. Still, there may be others who experience a range of positive and negative feelings in response to the pandemic or even feel a sense of numbness. In this webinar, we discuss stress reactions to COVID-19 including compassion fatigue. We will also cover science-backed ways to cope with stress, compassion fatigue, and uncertainty to build resilience. https://www.ppgaustralia.net.au/event-3900539
02.01.2022 Diseases are continually emerging. A conservative estimate is that there is one new human disease every eight months, with even more emerging in animals. In 2008, the UK Government’s Foresight programme investigated the potential threat of new and emerging diseases.1,2 Of the eight categories of diseases that were considered to be particularly important, three were prescient of the present severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic. http://theaustralianveterinarian.com//what-can-animal-cor/
