09.01.2022 WHO ARE AFFECTED BY CHANGES IN AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENTS? New Australian Citizenship requirements came into effect on 20th April 2017. Citizenship applicants are required to show they have been in Australia for the last four years on any temporary or permanent visa, with a maximum of 12 months oversea. If applicants are on permanent visa, they are required to be present in Australia for at least 12 months, with a maximum 3 months oversea.... Commonly, ahead of applying for permanent residence, people will spend an amount of time on temporary visas, which include: 1. International students who are completing studies in Australia and applying for General Skilled Migration; 2. 457 visa holders who are applying for permanent residence through the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) 3. Partner visa applicants who first obtain a temporary partner visa, then qualify for a permanent partner visa 2 years after lodging their initial partner visa application. For now, the legislation to bring the changes into effect has not been passed by the Parliament until the end of 2017.
