25.01.2022 Tunnellers Friends Memorial, Scottish National War Memorial, Edinburgh, showing mice and canaries in a cage. Unveiled in 1927 Antonia Reeve and the Trustees of the Scottish National War Memorial. Both sides in the First World War dug tunnels so they could explode mines under the enemys trenches. The tunnellers took canaries and mice with them to give early warning of methane or carbon dioxide as the creatures were quickly affected by toxic gases.

25.01.2022 ARMY175 || Army Animals From mascots to muscle military animals have always played an important role in our history. Military mascots were kept for ceremonial... purposes, as emblems for units or simply for companionship. Most were strays that were picked up along the way, with some serving through entire campaigns. Horse-power helped historic NZ Army campaigns, with more than 10,000 horses serving in German Samoa, at Gallipoli, in the Middle East and on the Western Front in WWI. Many animals, including donkeys, worked alongside troops to carry equipment, as messengers, as ambulance carriers and as comrades. In 2018, a NZ War Animal Memorial was unveiled at the National Army Museum in Waiouru to honour those animals that served alongside kiwi troops. Todays Army still sees animals working alongside units. Our Military Working Dogs are an important capability, trained to be deployed and extracted by air, land and sea. Our working dogs can aid search and rescue efforts, find explosives, and apprehend selected targets on command. #NZArmy #Army175

23.01.2022 Top dog LAC Julian Young and Military Working Dog (MWD) Cooper recently took out the 'Top Dog' trophy for the third time in a row during the MWD unit's recent Patrol Certification Assessments. Every 6 months, all dog teams undergo formal assessments to certify their operational proficiency. Both dog and handler are assessed as a team. The MWD teams were assessed on a number of categories:... Obedience and agility Apprehension and detention of intruders Gunfire Habituation (stability under gunfire) Cease Attacks (recall ability after being released for an apprehension) Tracking Patrol and Pickup (wind scent detection of intruders) Social Interaction and Canine Safety Procedures Fun fact: Cooper is the oldest dog in the unit (7 years, 7 months). This is Cooper’s last certification ahead of his upcoming retirement, showing the younger dogs that age is just a number.

The traditional shuttle loom finish means that a hem may be required for kiltmaking. D.C. Dalgliesh is Scotland's last authentic artisan tartan weaver. Learn more about this remarkable mill and its products on the D. C. Dalgliesh web site. We recommend the video, which shows how your tartan is woven! Note that these images are mostly computer generated. The shades of yarn our expert weavers use to create something traditional and beautiful for you may differ. But it will be traditionally correct, and simply lovely. As this fabric is woven to order, a minimum order length of four metres applies. https://www.scotweb.co.uk/tartan

08.01.2022 Walk for War Horse with the Donkeys of Scotland leading the way. Nature lovers across Scotland are being invited to take part in a special event that will not ...only get them walking the country’s beautiful landscapes but help raise vital funds for animals in need Walk for War Horse launches today* World Animal Day HQ and hopes to encourage animal lovers across the country to register interest in trekking the highlands and glens near their homes next Spring, with their horses, ponies, donkeys and dogs, while capturing on film the beauty of Scotland. It’s the idea of the Donkey Breed Society and for 10 people can register their participation and share their route. In return they will be given a purple poppy pin badge and a knitted poppy to pin on the collar of their animals and pets to show their support. And there will be prizes for best photos and most miles travelled over April 2021. COVID-19 has meant that most animal sanctuaries and rescue centres in Scotland and the UK have struggled over the past months to keep going. War Horse Memorial through its Animal Purple Poppy Fund is trying to help the most vulnerable. Kendall Young, of the Donkey Breed Society, who lives in Ayr, says the idea is to get other equine and animal organisations to take part. She says : Our members are always keen to promote the welfare of donkeys and we know that around Scotland wonderful equine and animal charities feel the same about their own good causes. This would be a great opportunity to get out into our wonderful countryside and help struggling charities. At War Horse Memorial we recently agreed partnership working with the Donkey Breed Society to further the cause of donkey welfare through a programme of education and support. With fundraising on hold for many charities because of coronavirus restrictions this is a great way to raise money through sponsorship and, because it’s not a group activity its a great way for individuals and families to keep within government guidelines while enjoying the breathtaking beauty of Scotland in the Spring. So how will it work? Anyone interested should email [email protected] to register. For a 10 registration fee War Horse Memorial will send by post a metal purple poppy pin badge and a knitted poppy to attach to collars and bridles. People are asked over the month of April to record their routes, and the number of miles walked and importantly, take photos en route. On April 30, 2021 they need to submit their log of miles covered and a selection of three photos that show Scotland at its best. Judges will award prizes for the best entries in a number of categories. See - https://bit.ly/3leYyYq

07.01.2022 The beautiful Royal Australian Air Force K9 Handlers Association memorial in Michigan USA.

07.01.2022 Ambassador Nigel Allsopp. We are honoured that Nigel Allsopp, Australian ANZAC of the year 2017 and Australia Day Citizen of the year 2019 is our very special A...mbassador representing Australia and New Zealand. We couldn’t have found anyone more illustrious and appropriate; Nigel is a veteran of military overseas deployments and a decorated police officer. He served in the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces for over 25 years, and has spent a lifetime working with animals, initially as a Military Working Dog handler. Nigel is the Founder and President of the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) and the driving force behind the establishment of memorials honouring the deeds and sacrifices of animals in wars. He is a published author of ten books on Police and Military animals and is a recognised subject matter expert. Nigel has established over 30 war animal memorials all over the world. In June 2017 he opened the WWI War Animal memorial in Pozieres, France. The memorial honours all animals from all nations. Today, Nigel remains in uniform where he is an operational explosive detection dog handler for the Queensland Police Service. He is a qualified Mounted Police Officer having undertaken basic and advanced Police riding courses in California, USA and is a member of the The Australian Light Horse Association Ceremonial troop. On National Animal Day on August 23, and to show Australian support to our cause, he laid a purple poppy wreath at the Army Veterinary Corps war animal memorial in Queensland (photo 2) and over many months he has given us advice and wise counsel. We were delighted when he flew over especially to lead Ambassador representatives from Canada, America, France and New Zealand in the laying of wreaths at the unveiling of Poppy our War Horse in Ascot on June 8, 2018. Nigel tell us; Horses have been used in law enforcement for centuries. They were the fastest and surest form of transportation. Even after cars became common, many law enforcement agencies continued to use mounted patrols the world over. Mounted police are police who patrol on horseback (equestrians) they continue to serve in both rural and metropolitan areas where their day-to-day function may range from being used for crime prevention in high visibility policing roles, searching for missing persons in remote areas or in the thick of a public disorder riot. They are the ten foot cops. Ten Foot Cops is the name of Nigel’s latest book and you can buy it in the UK from Amazon now for 13.94 at this link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0648823628 See - https://bit.ly/3jcZrAd

05.01.2022 Unknown image- great story- we have a similar story in Australia dog also Gunner and used in Darwin AAA gun position. "This dogs name was gunner my uncle brought him back from WW2 he was raised and slept under my uncles anti- aircraft gun. The gun crew shared their rations to feed him. By the time he was 18 months old my uncle said he would stand up and look at the sky. If he layed back down they new all was ok. If he growled and put his hackles up they got at the ready. He new the sound of the German aircraft and my uncle said he never got it wrong. He said gunner was better than any early warning system. I’m probably the only one left in the family that knows that story now so I thought I’d tell it before it’s lost forever like many story’s must be from that time."
