16.01.2022 Why is buying bottled water a problem? 1. It costs you money. Bottled water costs more per litre than petrol. If you were to buy the recommended intake of eight glasses of water per day this would cost you approximately $3,650 a year. So save the cash and tap it...it’s free! 2. It uses lots of energy to manufacture, transport, refrigerate and dispose of bottled water. ... 3. Bottled water creates large amounts of waste. Plastic bottles are among the ten most common rubbish items picked up on Cleanup Australia Day. Australia recycles only 36% of PET plastic drink bottles. Around 373 million plastic water bottles end up as waste each year. 4. Plastic bottles are produced with a plastic ring. If the ring is not cut prior to disposal, by a particularly environmentally aware person, then it enters our waste system as a whole ring and has the potential to cause a slow and painful death to a variety of Australia’s native fauna through strangulation, starvation, deformation, or infection #snipringsforwildlife Use a reusable water bottle. By doing so, you will save money, reduce waste, and protect native wildlife from becoming entangled.

16.01.2022 Welcome to the new National Office from the President, Suzanne Medway.

15.01.2022 BREAKING: The Australian platypus is at risk of extinction. This unique species has disappeared from an area almost three times the size of Tasmania in just 30 ...years. Research led by UNSW reveals new dams, the over-extraction of water from rivers, land clearing, attacks by foxes and dogs, pollution and urban sprawl are the main factors driving the decline. A coalition of UNSW researchers, ACF, WWF-Australia and Humane Society International has nominated the platypus to be listed as a nationally-recognised threatened species. Platypus protection needs two important actions: 1. Rapid assessment for listing as a threatened species; 2. Stronger national environment laws to protect all the wildlife and nature we love.

13.01.2022 #FlashbackFriday: It has been exactly one year, to date, since the Society met with the Environment Minister at Parliament House, asking for his full support to implement a complete ban on opera house nets in New South Wales to help protect Australia’s air-breathing semi-aquatic wildlife from drowning in New South Wales waterways a horrible death that is completely avoidable. While the Minister expressed his strong support for our new alliance, the New South Wales Platypus ...and Turtle alliance, and provided his full support towards the ban, one year later and the ban has not yet been implemented. In the meantime, our wildlife continues to suffer as a result. We sincerely hope that the complete ban on opera house nets will be announced shortly.
