22.01.2022 #AYAYogaPosesCompendium Today in #AsanaInFocus we're 'mooving' in for a closer look at (). BENEFITS:... Gomukhasana is another incredible pose to combat our modern postural concerns. It stretches the ankles, outer hips and glutes. It also opens the shoulders and chest in two key ranges of motion. This pose takes a little longer to set up well and is best practiced in longer holds, (60-90 seconds per side). Use a block! Even experienced yogis often have a difficult time getting both sitting bones to rest evenly on the mat, which can make it difficult for the knees to stack on top of each other in a balanced way. Use a block to lift the sitting bones off the floor and support them evenly. This tip can also help to alleviate pressure in the backs of the knee caps. You will need a strap! Gomukhasana is a notoriously difficult pose for tight-shouldered people, (ie ALL of us), who aren't able to hook their fingers together. The simple solution to this dilemma is to hold a strap between the hands. Remember, using a prop is not a sign of failure, rather it will allow you to get into the shape safely and to sustain the pose for longer. Layer your foundation! Begin in Dandasana, (Staff Pose), and place the right foot over to the left side of the left leg. Then gently slide the ankle back toward the outer left hip to stack the knees. This is a great place to start. Maybe even leave the bottom leg out straight until you feel more comfortable to include a bend in the lower leg as well. Rome wasn't built in a day... Pro Tip: Spinal Support Avoid 'flaring' the ribcage. Instead, always aim to keep the pubic bone and bottom of the sternum 'zipped' in toward one another to activate the front of the abdomen and release compression from the Lumbar spine. Na-moo-ste!

08.01.2022 #AsanaInFocus #AYAYogaPosesCompendium Many of us have a love-hate relationship with the (), but we hope that listing the ways it can easily be modified or used as a preparatory pose will make you want to revisit (and befriend again!) ... Plank Pose is a key position in the traditional Sun Salutation sequence (usually followed by Downward Dog or Chaturanaga Dandasana). You can also perform this pose by itself and stay anywhere from 30 seconds to 1 minute (or longer if you really would like to push yourself) TIPS: Keep your knees on the mat. Plank, when performed correctly, is JUST as beneficial if your knees are on the mat. Practice tips include: Keep the tops of the feet actively pressing down into the resistance of the mat to help ignite the musculature of the pelvic floor. Keep the hands spread for a broader base of support and press through the long columns of the arms to create more buoyancy in the rib cage and stability in the shoulder girdle. Dial the hands in toward the thumbs to engage the arms and protect the elbows. Try one-leg variations to target your glutes and improve balance. After coming into the position, inhale and lift one leg parallel to the floor. Press strongly through the raised heel and lengthen through the crown of your head, keeping the tailbone pressed towards the pubis. Hold for 10 to 30 seconds, exhale the foot to the floor, then repeat with the left leg for the same time. Practicing Kumbhakasana, (whether your knees are on the floor or lifted), on a regular basis delivers plenty of benefits! Plank Pose strengthens your core, arms, shoulders and improves your overall posture on and off the mat. When practiced correctly, you will enjoy increased muscular strength and stamina and improvement in your inversions and arm balances! See more

03.01.2022 #AYAYogaPosesCompendium Today in #AsanaInFocus we'll be looking at ( ). This asana is one of our primary asanas we'll be aiming to address in our summer Slow Awakening Flow. If done properly and consistently, there are many benefits to triangle pose. It stretches legs, muscles around the knee, ankle joints, hips, groin muscles, hamstrings, calves, shoulders, chest and spine. It also strengthens legs, knees, ankles and core muscles.... TIPS: Avoid common mistakes. Resist the temptation to bend your right knee in order to get your right hand to the floor. Keeping your right leg straight is more important. Do not rest your hand directly on your knee as this puts too much pressure on the joint. Make sure that the right heel is lined up with the arch of the left foot. Modify the pose for yourself. Given that this yoga pose is one you'll encounter again and again, don't give up on it if you find it difficult at first. Consider a modification! For example, it's perfectly fine to bring your right hand higher up your leg if that allows you to open your chest more, as long as does not rest directly on your knee. Ready for a challenge? Try dropping the left arm over the left ear so it comes parallel to the floor while keeping the shoulder rooting into the socket. Alternatively, wrap your left arm behind your back and take hold of your inner right thigh with your left hand. This creates traction, which allows you to open your chest toward the sky even more. Remember that practice makes perfect but don't forget it's all up to you to pave your path through each pose. Namaste! See more

02.01.2022 #AsanaInFocus Today, in our #AYAYogaCompendium we're 'bending over backwards' to bring you more pro tips on a real energy booster , otherwise known as . BENEFITS:... Wheel Pose is another great asana to help undo the damage caused by our modern day ergonomics. It opens the chest and shoulders, lengthens the hip flexors, strengthens the muscles of the back, legs and glutes and improves spinal mobility. Wheel Pose targets the Spinal Sympathetic Chain whilst inverting us, making this asana staple an energizing and wonderfully natural mood booster. TIPS: Feel like your wrists are an obstacle? Simply, place a pair of blocks against the wall, in line with your shoulders, and place your hands on them with the heels of the wrists just over the corners. This technique will assist you to lift into the pose without demanding too much flexion from the wrists. Looking for more? Climb the walls! Performing Wheel Pose with your chest towards a wall can assist you to begin deepening your experience in this asana. Simply work towards gently pressing your chest and sternum into the wall. Looking for less? Do you want many of the same benefits of Wheel Pose but need a variation? Look no further than Bridge Pose. This wonderful alternative will provide many of the benefits of Wheel, but will allow you to negotiate how deep you go and to hold the backbend for longer. Preparation is key! Avoid injury by taking time to adequately prepare yourself for this Peak Pose by including wrist releases and lots of chest and shoulder openers as well as some lunges to lengthen those psoas! Given all its benefits, you may soon discover Urdhva Dhanurasana to be one of your favorite asanas. Namaste!
