21.01.2022 The world watched on in horror as our country burned last summer. 3 billion animals were killed. We don't know how many kangaroos died or how many we have left.... yet the NSW Government set a commercial kangaroo slaughter quota of over 2 million for 2020. This is both cruel and reckless. On World Kangaroo Day join us in calling for a moratorium on kangaroo slaughter . Head to https://www.worldkangarooday.org/ to learn more and add your voice to the call to save our kangaroos

17.01.2022 Happy Birthday Conservationist and Founder of the Sanctuary Dr Thistle Yolette Stead [Harris] 29th July 1902 5th July 1990... Today is the 118th birthday of the sanctuary’s founder Dr Thistle Stead [Harris] Thistle often expressed the view that 'education of people was the most important pursuit in society' and in all her activities throughout her long professional and post-professional career, education in one form or another was integral with her endeavours. Dr Stead was a prolific author and published twelve books - the first of which was "Wildflowers of Australia" published in 1938. This publication did perhaps more than any other of its kind to popularise the recognition and appreciation of Australian native plants. It set in motion a chain of events which has established an international appreciation of Australia's flora. Thistle Stead left a great and enduring legacy which will continue to provide enlightenment and pleasure to present and future generations. She will be remembered by all who knew her and knew of her work with great respect for the inspiration that her work provided. The conservationist is one of the most important people living because civilised living is not civilised, properly speaking, without the natural environment of which man himself is apart. Unless we have habitat preservation in which people can see the natural bush, can learn to appreciate that this is the home of interesting and loveable animals, there is no culture in life (Thistle Harris)

17.01.2022 Did you know that over a quarter of Australia's butterflies use native grasses as their host-plants and at least 26 species use 'Tussock Grasses'. Tussock Gra...sses (Poa species) are a large group of native 'clumping' grasses that come in different sizes and shades of green. Some species support only a single butterfly whilst others are used by many. Two of the most used are 'Slender Tussock Grass' and 'Large Tussock Grass'. Few native grasslands remain and even these are hanging-on in remnant patches. Can you help bring them back? They make great additions to gardens, verges, habitat corridors, parklands, regeneration projects... More about Slender Tussock-Grass here: http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl More about Large Tussock-Grass here: https://www.anbg.gov.au/.../train.../poa-labillardierei.html

06.01.2022 The team at the Australian Wildlife Sanctuary are getting really excited, soon, we will be able to start sharing more information about our future plans at the sanctuary. The recovery process after the devastating bush fires is still progressing with fencing works to begin shortly. We would like to share some photos of our Koala plantation project currently underway with the support of Downes Nursery. This initial plantation of over 3500 Koala specific trees will help sustain... food for many Koalas. We are hoping to begin planting next year. This project means a great deal to all involved here. The sanctuary is a memorial to David G. Stead a man who fought tirelessly for the protection of this national icon. . We will keep you updated as this project progresses. The sanctuary remains closed. #wildliferules #bargo #lovethedilly #downeswholesalenursery

03.01.2022 These predictions are so sad.The most iconic native Australian animal worldwide and at risk of extinction in our lifetime. The Koala is so iconic to the Wollondilly Shire, back in 1798 an expedition of European settlers were sent on a discovery mission for a promised land where people could exist with little work. This expedition was led by John Wilson and John Price whom were the first Europeans to visit the Bargo area. John Price recorded the first sighting by Europeans o...f the Koala in the creeks east of what is now the Australian Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary is also a living memorial to the work of David George Stead an early conservationist whom in the 1920's successfully fought hard along with the Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia to stop the slaughtering of Koalas for the export of their fur. 100 years on, the fight to protect the Koala is still ongoing. #savethekoala #wildliferules #koala #bargo #DavidGeorgeStead
