25.01.2022 Yorkshire Dales Tale: A Yorkshire couple had spent their entire married life in the Yorkshire Dales. Sadly the wife passed away. The husband contacted the local newspaper about placing an obituary, but when told the cost, he muttered "How much? You've got to be joking!"... He finally agreed to pay, but only as little as possible. .. "I want sommat simple," he said. "My Gladys was a good-hearted and hard-working Yorkshire lass, but she wouldn't have wanted anything swanky." "Perhaps a small poem?" said the newspaper lady. "Nay lass, she wouldn't have wanted anything la-di-da like that, and she wouldn't have wanted me to spend too much brass. How's about we just say 'Gladys Braithwaite died'." "You must say WHEN she died" she insisted. "Do I? Okay, well, let's put Died 17th Jan 2016. That'll do." "OK," said the lady, "but it's usual to add some meaningful about the dearly departed." He thought a moment - "Well, just add 'Sadly missed', that'll do." " For the minimum price You can have another four words included." she explained. "No, no," he said, "Gladys wouldn't 'ave wanted me to splash out like that." "You wouldn't have to. As I just explained, the extra four words are included in the basic price." she said. "ARE they? You mean.........I will 'ave paid for 'em anyway?" "Yes indeed sir." "Well, if I'm paying for 'em, I'm damn well 'avin 'em!" The final wording was agreed and the following obituary appeared in the Yorkshire Post. 'Gladys Braithwaite died 17th January 2016. Also tractor for sale.'

One of the little girls may be the photo owner's Great Aunty - Catherine Pearl Jamieson, born 7/4/1891 died 8/9/1984, who married Horace Bennett Barnes 25/10/1919. Family names are Collins, Jamieson, Barnes - probably linked to Bunbury. Please reply to [email protected]
