20.01.2022 PhD OPPORTUNITY: Population connectivity of Antarctic marine invertebrates, James Cook University The Southern Ocean is poorly studied in terms of the potential... dispersal routes and barriers to connectivity for benthic marine species. A lack of understanding about spatial genetic structure limits our knowledge of connections between proposed ecoregions and also limits our ability to model potential changes in distributions in response to climate change. This PhD project, based at JCU: James Cook University, Australia, will investigate various aspects of the evolutionary history of Southern Ocean taxa. Broader investigations of Southern Ocean ecology will be shaped by the student’s interests, but may focus on: phylogeography and population genomics systematics and phylogenetics selection and adaptation This project may incorporate some Antarctic fieldwork and will also build upon data already collected from Antarctica. Ther...e are a few mother and calf pairs hanging around Encounter Bay at the moment and with whale watching in full swing why not head down and see them in real life. Remember to keep your distance and give the whales space when visiting, and remember that no drones are permitted in the marine park without a permit. 06.01.2022 I finally got to see the beautiful Wobbiegong Shark tonight!!! After finishing work, I felt like going for a splash with my dive bud Jules Casey . With 10 bar left in the tank, she flagged me down and said it had been seen. We swam to the area, and the rest is awesome shark history.
