25.01.2022 Had a lot of fun catching Murray crayfish this week. Including a large female (worst photo). Only 10 males out of 60 caught. We were around Wagga Wagga where recreational fishing is allowed. Would be interesting to see what the ratio is in the closed areas.

12.01.2022 A pleasure working with the very talented @Doug Gimesy, but why does it always have to be so cold?!

11.01.2022 It has been an interesting week working in the Wimmera River. We have been undertaking habitat mapping activities at selected sites using single beam dual frequency sonar (CEEScope) and a Starfish sidescan sonar to collect data that was post processed using a hydrographic survey program (Hypack). Data will be used to assist river manager with decision making.

11.01.2022 Austral staff have found a species believed to have been regionally extinct in the lower Murray Darling Basin. The field discovery has been independently verified as the Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon. The chance discovery was made during recent fieldwork undertaken as part of a Goulburn Murray Water project. This discovery is only the 23rd occurrence of a sighting in Victoria, and the first in over 20 years when they were found in the Cadross Lakes, making it an extremely r...are find. It is a great news story in the context of the beleaguered Murray Darling Basin and provides hope of the survival of another threatened species. The focus should now be on establishing the structure and extent of the population with measures employed to ensure its ongoing survival. Austral welcomes the opportunity to be involved in this important, ongoing work. See more
