25.01.2022 Puppy Cognition: Interesting research coming from the AKC (American Kennel Club). "Results demonstrate that by 8 to 10 weeks of age, puppies show perceptual discrimination and memory after short delays. They exhibit social communicative skills, flexible thinking, and self-control, but all to lesser degrees than adult dogs. Investigators conclude that dogs appear to be biologically programmed for communication with humans and that these skills show up early in development. 22.01.2022 "No-one cares if you call your dog your baby. It's treating them like one that causes issues." The unpopular truth... My dog is not my child.... My dog is not my furbaby. I am not her mother. My dog is my friend, she is my partner and my companion. To treat her like a child, to infantilize her and make it seem as though she needs my constant coddling or protection, would be unfair to her. She is an adult carnivore that I have brought into my human world. Because of that it is my responsibility as her owner: 1) To communicate with her in a way she can understand. 2) To provide leadership, discipline and mutual respect. 3) To understand her instincts and needs, and provide appropriate outlets for them. 4) To train her and provide her the skills to function effectively in our human world, including acceptable manners and behaviors. Our dogs deserve to be given responsibility and allowed to be adult creatures, not perpetual babies. Please, don't try to make them tiny humans, they aren't and they don't want to be. Dogs are wonderful because they are dogs. Let them be dogs. Teach them to be good ones. Also, since apparently being told the furry mammal they live with isn't actually human is terribly upsetting to some people. My point is that dogs aren't people, or children. Trying to make them into tiny people very often leads to insecure, anxious, reactive, fearful or aggressive behaviors. If your dog can be your baby with zero negative consequences, ok. Enjoy your unicorn dog. But if a person's dog shows any of the above behaviors, the babying is the first thing that needs to change. No one really cares if you call your dog your baby. It's treating them like one that causes issues. -K. Carter *copied and shared* Austrax ACDs photo

19.01.2022 PLEASE LEAVE THEM IN THE SHOPS The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China. Their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a... toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell. Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes. They regularly cause intestinal blockages and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog. Please be safe with your dogs!

07.01.2022 From the Dogs Qld Code of Ethics for registered breeders: "(5) I agree not to breed from a bitch or a dog in a way that is detrimental to the dog or the bitch or to the breed. I further acknowledge that I shall breed only with the intent of maintaining and/or improving the standard of the breed and welfare, health and soundness of my dogs and I shall strive to eliminate... hereditary diseases within my dogs and from within the breeds;" Let's see how profit based puppy farmers attempt to adhere to this rule.

02.01.2022 QLD UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY'S' Centre for the Environment is developing an interdisciplinary project examining the human-wongari (dingo) conflict on K’Gari. P...hD project: Social Attitudes towards Wongari Management on K’GariFraser Island "We propose to develop an interdisciplinary PhD project in the fields of environmental sciences and governance of the human-wildlife relationship focused on human-wongari (dingo) conflict on K’Gari Fraser Island. The PhD project will provide an unprecedented opportunity to work across disciplines to investigate the socio-ecological aspect of that conflict. In 2019, the Fraser Island Dingo Conservation and Risk Management Strategy underwent a major review following an increased number of negative human-wongari interactions. In some circumstances those interactions led to injury and hospitalisation of the people involved, and euthanasia of the wongari. One of the outcomes of the review was an acknowledgement that the behaviour of the island’s wongari are consistently managed and recorded, whilst the behaviour and attitudes of the island’s residents and visitors are less well-documented. In this project, the PhD candidate will design and implement an empirical project that seeks to further knowledge of one or more of the following: Local and visitor attitudes towards the wongari (in this respect ‘’local’’ refers to both the island’s residents and the traditional owners of the land, the Butchulla). Local and visitor attitudes towards euthanasia of the wongari. Local and visitor attitudes towards other wongari current management strategies, such separation via fencing, tagging and wongari identification, use of tracking collars, carrying a stick when walking to act as a deterrent and education messages about the importance of securing food and not feeding wongari. Local and visitor attitudes towards other proposed wongari management strategies, such as visitors required to complete a checklist/ questionnaire acknowledging dingo safe practices, use of aversion collars as a means of separating wongari and people and restricting visitor numbers to the island. Attitudes towards legal restrictions on interactions with wongari, including messaging and the amount and nature of fines for breaching said restrictions. Reasons for non-compliance with the legal restrictions on interactions with wongari. Total visitor numbers to K’Gari-Fraser Island. Policy and legal prescriptions that are consistent with stakeholder values and wishes." Eligibility Requirements 1 First class honours (H1), or equivalent, in an environmental science, social science or law degree. 2 Demonstrated expertise in research on the socio-ecological issues; 3 Demonstrated knowledge of, and entry-level experience with, qualitative and quantitative research; 4 Effective written, interpersonal and computer-mediated communication skills; 5 Indigenous applicants are highly encouraged to apply. How to Apply Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Please send your Expression of Interest, outlining your eligibility, to [email protected].
