24.01.2022 5 ways to ensure success when interviewing online At some point in your career, you are going to come across either an interview or presentation via an online communication platform such a Skype or Google Hangouts, which, if you haven’t experienced before, will leave you thinking, where do I start and how the hell am I going to pull this off? Experts estimate that 90% of the cues we give off are non- verbal, so how do you make a good impression essentially through a computer ...screen? Here are my top 5 recommendations: Check your connections: a. Make sure you have a secure internet connection. b. Check your audio on your device; do you need to increase the volume to hear effectively, is your microphone operating correctly or perhaps you require a headset with a microphone? c. Check your web camera for clarity and brightness; the height of camera lens and the angle of the lens is important, always ensure that your face is being captured fully this will highlight your facial expressions to your audience. Prepare your background Make sure you have a neutral & ‘clean’ background. If you are not in an office, look around the room and make sure there are no distracting items that could take the focus away from what you are saying to your viewers. Prepare your surrounds Wherever you are, look for a room with a door, this will help minimise surrounding noise and maintain a business-like setting. If you are at home, make sure you tell the people around you, what you are doing, reducing the possibility of interruptions, like people calling out to you, or the TV or Stereo being turned on. Dress the part Like a face to face interview, make sure you do your research. Check out the company’s website or social media sites to give you some indication of how they dress and their company culture. Just because you are not physically present, doesn’t mean you can’t look the part; always imagine the possibility of becoming one of their team members. Be yourself If you were in a face to face interview you would greet the audience with a handshake. You can greet your viewers in a similar way online, with a wave and a smile down the camera. It is also OK to have some notes about the interview or your CV next to you to help your nerves. You only have a small window of opportunity to impress, so lighten up, relax and have some fun let the real you shine through the camera! Like to know more about interview skills? 10.01.2022 5 things to change on your CV Having worked as an Internal Recruitment Professional and a Recruitment Agency Consultant, I have 20+ years industry experience and have seen and read thousands of Curriculum Vitae’s (CVs). I have just about seen it all from CVs representing an encyclopedia of data to very confused, disorganised summaries of work. Your CV is your initial introduction to a prospective employer. How you present your professional ‘brand’ on your CV will determin...Continue reading

07.01.2022 How to leave a positive impression at the close of an interview Your goal for the interview is to begin and leave the meeting conveying a positive impression. So how do you achieve this when the end of an interview can become awkward? Here are my top 5 recommendations on how to wrap up an interview on a positive note:... Confirm your interest in the job and company eg: Finding out more about the role, the company’s objectives and long-term vision, has really confirmed my interest in the position. Tell them why they should choose you. Summarise key skills discussed and align them with yours. Ask if there is anything else required from you eg references, sight original transcripts etc. Confirm the next steps in the hiring process eg timeframes, the number of interviews in the process and a potential start date. Do you have the interviewer's contact details? eg: I’d like to stay in touch. How would you prefer I do this? Email or phone? Would you like to discuss interview techniques? 03.01.2022 This was an interesting segment on the "Today" show. It made me wonder: 1. How many of us are currently going through this issue? 2. How have you gone about asking for a pay rise if you have identified the gender pay gap? 3. Have you had to leave your current role to get that pay rise?... Please feel free to leave your comments to let us know.
