22.01.2022 Use of AVH data through GBIF!
22.01.2022 See that number 1 in red on the label? This is the first specimen at the National Herbarium of NSW to be given a catalogue number. The species of pea, Swainsona... swainsonioides, was collected in 1936 from central Queensland. The historical decision to number specimens was made to improve curation and research, and this proved to be a good move because now there are over 1.4 million in the collection! The little discovery was made by science staff and volunteers who are busily attaching and barcoding the entire collection to prepare them for digitisation. 20.01.2022 Hip hip hooray! Happy 65th birthday to our Northern Territory Herbarium The Territory's first herbarium was established in Alice Springs to help the pastoral ...industry identify poisonous plants. In 1989 the main specimen collection was moved to Darwin although we still have a critical herbarium in Alice Springs. The NT Herbarium is essential for the work our department does towards conserving biodiversity values like making sure we have the right names on the right plants!
19.01.2022 The Australasian Virtual Herbarium was found to be one of the most cited datasets in this recently published study. The most commonly studied taxa were plants.... The overall prevalence ... corroborated a recent bibliometric study, which found that 56% of biodiversity-related papers addressed plants. See more

15.01.2022 Using AVH data to study mistletoe host interactions.
14.01.2022 Specimens are increasingly used in ways that influence our ability to steward future biodiversity. As we enter the Anthropocene, herbaria have likewise entered... a new era with enhanced scientific, educational, and societal relevance. 10.01.2022 Happy Birthday Alexander von Humboldt (14 September 1769 - 6 May 1859). Humboldt was a Prussian polymath, naturalist, geographer and explorer whose ideas paved ...the way for understanding the world through science. Humboldt worked prolifically throughout his life and published works on geography, botany, zoology, astronomy, mineralogy and other sciences. The National Herbarium of Victoria holds at least 24 Humboldt specimens in the Global Collection, including 13 types, all from South America.
09.01.2022 A large paper we have been working on for around three years has been published. Thanks to Pensoft for sponsoring the paper and to TDWG for support.
