23.01.2022 Cooper Union's well-renowned type workshops are being delivered online for the first time! Fantastic opportunity (if you can overcome the time difference) to get access to these courses from the comfort of home. http://coopertype.org/workshops/nyc/nyc

22.01.2022 The magnificent Paula Scher. This upcoming book is a long-term case study in branding and how it doesn’t have to be static.

22.01.2022 Here's an interview (by the wonderful Nicole Phillips) discussing my new font release Deka and my recently completed Masters in Typeface Design. If you're interested in type design, I go into some depth about my process. And I also say mildly amusing things like "I'm less trendy than a Kevin Spacey movie." http://www.typographher.com//in-conversation-with-wayne-th

19.01.2022 As a young designer, I saw Ed Benguiat's typefaces in my extremely limited font menu. I often disliked them but, over time, have come to appreciate the creativity and expressiveness. And my tastes have been proven wrong, since his typefaces have been timelessly popular. Thanks for the guidance, Ed.

18.01.2022 Just like Jonathan Hoefler, I have always found pangrams lacking as a tool for judging spacing in a font. Unlike Jonathan Hoefler, I lacked the wherewithal to do something about it. Jonathan has custom-designed strings of text specifically for this purpose and, with incredible generosity, has chosen to share them publicly. Even if you're not a type designer, a lot can be learned about the behaviour of text just by reading this. Thanks Jonathan. https://www.typography.com/blog/text-for-proofing-fonts

18.01.2022 ATypI's annual conference is going online for the first time, and the call for proposals is open. Australians find it hard to get to Europe (the usual conference venue) so this is a great opportunity for type lovers to see the conference from afar, or even present a session. Info here: https://atypi2020.dryfta.com And ATypI's website is here:... http://atypi.org/2020.

17.01.2022 I agree with Steven: why do we get so possessive over brands?

17.01.2022 Recently I had the chance to contribute typography to a tourism campaign for Port Stephens (for my international followers, Port Stephens is a wonderful holiday destination near my home in New South Wales). I was honoured to be asked by @destination_nsw and Creative Director Geoff Cowen @geoffc21 to create a custom typeface as a defining part of the brand. Creating brands of this scope requires a deft combination of creative direction, design and messaging, and the ongoing co...ordination of imagery, typography and copywriting into a campaign which gets the tone of voice just right. I think this campaign is bang-on, and it’s a credit to Geoff and the dedicated team of creatives behind it. The photography, especially, is stunning. My typeface included dozens of specialty ligatures, developed in combination with Geoff, which helped add vibrancy and flexibility to the brand. This post kindly reproduces some of the material from Destination NSW’s online brand story which lists all the wonderful creatives involved. I urge you to check it out, including the stunning videos. They will make you want to go there. https://bit.ly/30ogwPv

14.01.2022 So pleased to announce that I will be speaking at #atypi2020 All Over. This is THE premier international conference for type nerds (well only if you don’t count Typism Lettering Community) and I am super-chuffed to be accepted as a presenter. This event generally takes place in Europe or the Americas, which is not easy for Aussies to attend. This year due to Covid the organisers have taken it online and, in the process, broadened the range of speakers enormously. Schedule and registration to be released imminently see atypi.org/2020

13.01.2022 Great mini-documentary about two relatively unknown Swiss type designers: https://www.allegra-alena-type-documentary.ch

13.01.2022 Transcription . . . .... . . . . . . . . . . . . Image: One of those folding "special" signs that gets put outside of bars or cafes. Handwritten text on sign: As a superhero, I would be "Typoman" The writer of wrongs

12.01.2022 How long does it take to design a font? Some people do it in a few weeks, but not me. This one took me ten years. As a type designer, I find it very difficult to test my fonts in any kind of meaningful way. This leads to constant worry that I’m releasing something which is undercooked. So I decided to just use this one for a while, with no deadline for release. That ‘while’ turned into a decade while I was kept busy with other stuff. During that time I used the font... on a near-daily basis, allowing me to procrastinate ever further while I pondered which tweaks to make. Also during this time Adobe got in first they released a font with my (planned) name. So I had to look elsewhere, and the name Deka was born. It’s Greek for ‘ten’. There’s 8 weights. Each weight contains 638 glyphs. It covers all Latin-based languages and Cyrillic. And Opentype features such as small caps and old-style numerals. Its intention is to be a versatile sans-serif suitable for both text and display, but with more personality than geometrics and grotesks. Enjoy Deka, my first new font release in ten years. If you want to check it out fully, go to MyFonts.com and search the name Deka.

10.01.2022 Berlin is such a cool place for type enthusiasts. While visiting over Christmas, I was struck by the rich variety of environmental typography. Here's some examples.

10.01.2022 I have no idea whenor ifI will ever return to Italy. With luck, this most beautiful country will return to normal soon and travel will again be possible. In t...he meantime, I take solace by living vicariously through years I have spent collecting flea market artifacts, and discovering Italian type, typography and graphic design and daydream about my visits to arguably the eighth wonder of the typographic world, or at least one of the world’s great type and printing museums, Tipoteca Italiana. https://www.printmag.com/typogra/caio-tipographia-italiana/ See more

10.01.2022 The TypeWknd conference is on now and my talk Wood Type is Good Type is on tomorrow morning (Australian time) at 6.30a.m what? Yes, that’s a.m. You don’t love me that much? FINE. I’ll just go find some new friends from OVERSEAS SYDNEY AEST: Saturday 6.30am USA CDT: Friday 4.00pm UK BST: Friday 9.30pm... MUMBAI IST: Saturday 2.00am I’ll be discussing my foolhardy attempt to create a multi-colour wood type font. In italic. Yep. https://typewknd.com/schedule/

08.01.2022 Great article from Jonathan Hoefler about the process of making Abstract for Netflix. I especially like Point 6 in which Jonathan says the shoot "gave me a renewed appreciation for everyone who’s ever entrusted me to design a new typeface"... There's lessons in collaboration here for all creatives. https://www.typography.com/blog/abstract-typography-episode

07.01.2022 Berlin U-Bahn station signage. Having never been to Berlin before, I’m a bit surprised at the inconsistency of type and framing. Major cities would usually have a consistent presentation of their public identity. Any of my type friends out there: is there a reason for this?

07.01.2022 The Face magazine has been voted the most significant creative moment of the last 40 years. Neville Brody was "given the freedom to question every aspect of how magazines were laid out." https://www.creativereview.co.uk/40-creative-moments-that-/
