21.01.2022 The AVA acknowledges and mourns the passing of one of the leading figures of the voice community. On June 5, Kristin Linklater died in her home in Orkney, Scotland. Kristin was much loved as a teacher, mentor and friend to many voice trainers, both in Australia and abroad. After growing up in Orkney, she trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, with Iris Warren as her voice teacher. Kristin went on to train with and teach alongside Warren, and so began her ...career as one of the most influential people in the field of voice production. She authored two seminal voice texts Freeing the Natural Voice: Imagery and Art in the Practice of Voice and Language (1976, revised in 2006) and Freeing Shakespeare’s Voice: The Actor’s Guide to Talking the Text (1992), which many of us know and love. For decades, Kristin educated and inspired voice trainers, actors, and countless others seeking to discover the possibilities of their voices. She was known for her rigour, integrity, and passion for connecting people with their authentic voices, and she leaves a legacy in the voice community that cannot be overstated. She will be missed.
