25.01.2022 CW: Suicide Tomorrow is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay. As well as shining a light on suicide prevention, we wanted to remind you of the resources and support avail...able to us when we're struggling. One such resource we're really proud of is 'You Are Not Alone'. This online channel can help you through, if you're caring for someone who has attempted suicide, or is at risk of doing so. Do you care about someone who has tried to take their own life? Head to sane.org/you-are-not-alone where you can learn how to look after them and yourself.
25.01.2022 Today is #RUOKDay and this year’s campaign focuses on what to say when someone answers ‘no’ to that important question. Many people feel uncomfortable and unp...repared when talking about mental health problems and this can mean the conversation never starts at all. Mental Health First Aid courses teach people the skills to feel confident about what to do next if someone says I’m not okay. At an MHFA course, you will learn how to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems or a crisis such as thoughts of suicide. You’ll gain the confidence to give the most effective support you can and when and how to access professional help. There is more to say after RUOK? and the conversation that follows could change a life. For those who want to feel confident and prepared when having that conversation, there is Mental Health First Aid Training. If you’d like to learn the skills to have that conversation on RUOK? day or any other day, visit https://mhfa.com.au/ #RUOKDay #suicideprevention #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #MHFA #MHFA_Australia #mentalhealthfirstaid

20.01.2022 Tasmanian Parliament has just done something incredibly brave. See, the state has been absolutely smashed by the shutdown of industry and it’s much bigger tha...n COVID. The Tassie unemployment rate is over 16% and for almost a decade, there have been 9 people going for every job vacancy in places like Burnie in the North-West. It’s a huge problem. And now, they have a huge solution. The Parliament has just today committed to scoping a Job Guarantee a policy that would create a RIGHT to work. It would demand government provide work universally, just as we provide healthcare and education to all. It would give every Tasmanian the right to a decent job, doing the work that helps us all, but that markets fail to provide: in clean energy, manufacturing essentials, and vital care work with old and young alike. It would see the state funding a program to connect people to meaningful work in the places they already live and care about. THIS is the mark of policymakers TRULY committed to eliminating unemployment. It put’s Morrison’s lip service to jobs to shame. In an era of political narrow-mindedness, it is exactly the kind of bold thinking that will help us overcome the enormous challenges we face together. Every other state in the country should take note

15.01.2022 R U OK?Day is TODAY. It’s Australia’s national day of action when we remind others that every day is the day to ask, Are you OK? if someone in your world is s...truggling with life’s ups and downs. It can be difficult for people to know how to ask R U OK? And even more difficult to know what to say and do if they are not OK. 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us. You don’t have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before they’re in crisis, which can make a positive difference to their life. Follow this guide for ideas on what to say next. You may also find this roleplay conversation helpful to learn how to listen, engage and check in with others. https://irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com//RUOKDay2020_Conversat https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask

03.01.2022 Thinking about applying for one of our Creative Grants, which close next Friday? Wellingtonian Michelle Cameron could tell you more about what creating a grants... project is like. Her personal experiences with mental distress stigma inspired her grant-winning project, an animated docuseries called Fight or Flight. Fight or Flight shares 12 young people’s experiences with mental distress and is set to be released later this year. Because of the stigma around mental distress and abuse, I struggled on my own for a long time before a family member noticed that something was going on and helped me, she says. Now I realise that when people discriminate against mental distress or abuse, it is always out of fear. I wanted [the series] to show that feeling safe is important. If you notice that someone else is not acting like themselves, talk to them about it. It may save their life. Read more about Michelle’s grants project and how it aims to patua te whakam/lift the shame and judgement around mental distress: https://www.likeminds.org.nz//michelles-project-fight-or-f
02.01.2022 Lived experiences are great educational opportunities to break down the stigma of mental health.
01.01.2022 Steve Jobs died a billionaire, with a fortune of $7 billion, at the age of 56 from pancreatic cancer, and here are some of his last words... In other eyes,... my life is the essence of success, but aside from work, I have a little joy. And in the end, wealth is just a fact of life to which I am accustomed. At this moment, lying on the bed, sick and remembering all my life, I realize that all my recognition and wealth that I have is meaningless in the face of imminent death. You can hire someone to drive a car for you, make money for you but you can not rent someone to carry the disease for you. One can find material things, but there is one thing that can not be found when it is lost LIFE. Treat yourself well, and cherish others. As we get older we are smarter, and we slowly realize that the watch is worth $30 or $300 both of which show the same time. Whether we carry a purse worth $30 or $300 the amount of money in the wallets are the same. Whether we drive a car worth $150,000, or a car worth $30,000 the road and distance are the same, we reach the same destination. If we drink a bottle worth $300 or wine worth $10 the stroller will be the same. If the house we live in is 300 square meters, or 3000 square meters the loneliness is the same. Your true inner happiness does not come from the material things of this world. Whether you’re flying first class, or economy class if the plane crashes, you crash with it. So, I hope you understand that when you have friends or someone to talk to this is true happiness! Five Undeniable Facts 1 Do not educate your children to be rich. Educate them to be happy. So when they grow up they will know the value of things, not the price. 2 Eat your food as medicine, otherwise you will need to eat your medicine as food. 3 Whoever loves you will never leave you, even if he has 100 reasons to give up. He will always find one reason to hold on. 4 There is a big difference between being human and human being. 5 If you want to go fast go alone! But if you want to go far go together. And in conclusion... The six best doctors in the world 1 Sunlight 2 Rest 3 Exercise 4 Diet 5 Self-confidence 6 Friends Keep them in all stages of life and enjoy a healthy life. Whichever stage in life we are at right now, with time, we will face the day when the curtain comes down. Treasure Love for your family, love for your spouse, love for your friends... Treat yourself well. Cherish others. Love the people Life sent you, one day He’ll need them back. Something worth sharing!!!
