18.01.2022 SCAM ALERT With tax time in full swing, beware of myGov-themed SMS and email scams! These messages will often ask you to click on a link to verify your deta...ils, and may seem to be legitimate because they show in your ATO or myGov SMS message thread. Don’t click any links, and don’t provide the information requested. A genuine ATO or myGov message will never ask you to access online services via a hyperlink. 14.01.2022 Most people wouldn't know how many hours the accounting profession has done for clients since all the Convid 19 economic policies came into being. In my opinion one of the unseen heros of these times. So to all my fellow accounting people Well Done!!
14.01.2022 Sent to me yesterday a bit of a giggle. On a serious point it is much better to get help than struggling with it yourself & getting stressed.

13.01.2022 Have you every asked How did that transaction get there & it so wasn't meant to go there!?? My Tip: "Every transaction can be fixed in an accounting system." Need to understand what went wrong, what accounts the transaction affects, then work out the best way to make it all happy.

06.01.2022 Earlier this week my phone rang. The number was 03 9028 4721. I thought it was a bit strange because I don’t know many people in that area code that would actually ring me but even though I was a bit on the busy side, I decided to answer the call. It was a recorded message from the ATO. It said that I owed lots of money to the ATO and that the Federal Police would come knocking at my door if I didn’t return the phone call blah blah. The message was about 3 minutes long... and sounded quite intimidating. I knew it was a scam and laughed as I hang up. Then a couple of days later I received an email to say that because I didn’t return the phone call, I was in breach of ATO ruling blah blah and if I didn’t ring them within one hour the police will be notified. My response? Delete, delete, got to love that delete button! Why they would think that a follow up email would work, after the phone call, is beyond me. A couple of things I noted: 1. Every time the real ATO has rang me it comes up with a private number and a real person speaks to me. It is not a recorded message. 2. If you do owe the ATO anything, they will tell you the exact amount, to the cent, that you owe them. They will not say lots of money. 3. All emails from the ATO have the ending of @ato.gov.au 4. I know that my tax returns are all happy. It’s now a BAS agent requirement that our all business and personal tax are not outstanding. Therefore, I wasn’t concerned at all. What to do if this happens to you: 1. Know it’s a scam and hang up, must sure you have a laugh when you push the button. DO NOT return the phone call. 2. If your tax returns are all up to date and you have received Notice of Assessment with a refund all is good. The ATO will not be chasing you for payment. They will be chasing people who actually do owe them money and will never use threats like these scammers. 3. If your tax returns are not up to date, move it up on the to do list. Find a tax agent and get it sorted. 4. There are such as websites www.scamwatch.gov.au and www.humanservices.gov.au that have a list of scams if you are unsure and want to check it out. Finally, if you are still unsure contact the ATO directly on 13 28 61 or your accountant/tax agent to put your mind at ease. And remember to laugh at the scammers who think they know everything about your tax returns!

04.01.2022 Facebook is telling me that I haven't posted in awhile, obviously they haven't heard about June 30th in the bookkeeper world. This is what I have been doing for my clients lately: Employee payment summaries done & sent ATO employee payment summary reconciled & sent BAS April-June finalized & lodged in ATO Portal ... End of Year Financial year reconciled and ready for the accountant to do their tax thing. Step-in to help a family with so many things in the business that they didn't know about when my client suddenly passed away. Time to take a breathe, a glass a wine or two and relax for the weekend.
